Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

your right it isn't top dawg at the schools you mentioned but it is higher on the list than tOSU's is. But the athletic departments at those schools have dedicated a lot of resources to their individual programs, more so than what tOSU has. MSU and mich have been doing it a lot longer and have storied traditions more than tosu has and Notre Dames athletic department has really committed to the program. I think that is the main difference right now.

I certainly agree with you that our administration needs to make more of a committment to the OSU hockey program. They can start by bringing in a legitimate coach that will put a championship-caliber program on the ice. Down the road, they may want to seriously consider building a 9,000-seat, hockey-only facility. I say 9,000 because if we actually put a championship-caliber team on the ice, we'll sellout 9,000 seats all the time. I think anything less would be too small. As for being the top dawg at tOSU, that's never going to happen. Nothing will ever be bigger at Ohio State than football. I do believe with the right coach and a championship-caliber program, hockey can be 3rd behind football and men's basketball, and there's nothing wrong with that. I think it's great that hockey is obviously the top dawg at Miami. Your administration made a committment to your hockey program, and it has paid dividends. You have one of the top hockey programs in the country and it didn't really take you that long to make that climb. That gives me hope that someday Ohio State could get to that level. I'm just being realistic about the established sports we have here at OSU and where hockey will be on the totem pole and to me, third behind football and men's basketball isn't that bad.

Just some good natured ribbing, after all I may not have anything to laugh about after this weekend. Even though our coach is a joke it doesn't make me laugh. Actually I have relatives who attended Miami and Michigan. Holiday get-togethers can be a little intense depending on the topic of conversation!

spot on, they never will be higher than 3rd. Only reason I would say the capacity might want to be more around the 7,000 range is I would have to think on nights the jackets are in town and OSU are at home it would affect attendance. A 7,000 seat arena isn't small by any means, its better to sell out consistantly and have a high demand for tickets than to have empty seats in a slightly bigger place. I think its almost a given that OSU will have a coaching change at the end of this season, but they need a coach that has a plan first and build from there. It will be a process but you can get the best coach possible if the administration doesn't buy in and make changes he won't succeed either.

Hopefully it will be a close game but it isn't always how hard our guys play, a lot depends on who Markell suits up and what lines he plays. If the Miami fans get too boisterous we'll just have to remind them than only those who are part of the politically correct effeminate left are Redhawks, a real Miami student or Alum is and always will be a REDSKIN!lol! Nothing personal for you Miami people but it has to be embarrassing that your school bailed on your traditions even before the NCAA came out with their mascot mandates.

Obviously, you don't know the story. Briefly, the Miami tribe for whom the school is named asked that the name, Redskins, be changed. The University proclaims, and has, a very close relationship with the tribe and agreed to change the name to preserve the relationship. Currently, Miami has a tremendous connection to the Miami tribe including scholarships and educational opportunities that are, frankly, unavailable to many Native Americans. In return, the students of Miami University have an opportunity to connect with the tribe in a way unmatched by other collegiate or non-collegiate programs.

I was a Redskin but have no issue with the change and support the decision fully.

Thanks for the info, 95. Pretty cool that there is a strong relationship rather than the adversarial (sp?) situations seen at other schools (NoDak? Dirty?).

I was rather young (8?) when the name change took place so I have no issue with it whatsoever, Miami has always been the RedHawks in my sports memory. I think the first time I heard of the school was the 99' Sports Illustrated cover when Wally took us to the Sweet Sixteen. But as the poster above me said it is nice to have a non contentious relationship with our school's affiliate tribe.

Yes I knew the story but having family who attended and knowing many many Miami alum over the years I would say the majority were NOT in favor of the change. No intent of trying to insult anybody but if the university is so concerned with their relationship with the tribe would it turn the land back over to them if asked?

Unfortunately, it does seem like a majority of alumni who were "Redskins" while at Miami have decided to hold an eternal grudge against the University over the mascot change. However, I have a feeling that this only seems to be the case, due to the fact that the disgruntled alumni are much more vocal about their opinion. I understand their view to some extent, but it's ridiculous when they refuse to make contributions or support the school in other ways because of it. A change in mascot is certainly not going to destroy or degrade the heart of what makes Miami (or any other school) great.

Nonetheless, having been raised in Columbus and bred on Ohio State athletics, I'm sure that if the buckeye trees of Ohio got together and petitioned to have tOSU's mascot changed to the acorn, there would be hell to pay. :p

Obviously I have no idea and I'll end the threadjack here because that's just a ridiculous comment. If that's your line of thought, then MOST of us folk should turn in our deeds and move out of the country.

Indeed you should, however there is no inhabited corner of the earth one could move to that hasn't been conquered by someone so I see no need for apologies or refunds. I have no guilt for whatever was done by those who came before us and what I have from it is mine just like Miami should be Redskins regardless of what anyone thinks. I would be willing to bet the university lost more donations from those disgruntled alum that they gained from the tribe.

You are clearly one of those cold hearted capitalists I read about in a book once.

I think I might be in the minority here, but if Markell is given another three years, I wouldn't have a problem with that. So I don't want to get into the coach mud slinging. But if the job did come open, I wonder if they would consider the head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers. What is his name

Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )

No, he's right. Lost a LOT of $$$ when Garland made the switch from Redskins.

I know I was only teasing. I have a couple friends who work phones for Miami calling for donations and they get the "I'll give money when you change the name back to Redskins" multiple multiple times a day.

If there's one thing I've learned in life it's when someone tries to "improve" something they usually end up ruining it for someone else. You don't even want to guess how many pi**ed off Illini are out there right now over the issue of their mascot image! But to get us back on the subject of hockey, Michigan-4 ND-0

With the Notre Dame loss to Michigan that leaves Lake Superior as the only team with a chance of passing us to clinch the home berth. The next three days will be extremely interesting in the world of hockey. (three because of USA vs Canada Sunday)
