* I understand that there's no such thing as a penalty " FREE GAME " because I have played the game , Coached the game and also have Refed the game.
To get called on a penalty in OT , the penalty has to be pretty obvious. Most refs want the teams to decide the games especially in OT.
The way I see it is that there are two kinds of Penalties.
1. " HARD WORKING " one were the player is digging hard for the puck and then gets a penalty.
2. " STUPID " ones were the player chooses to get a Penalty out of anger and lack of self-control.
It's the timing of the STUPID penalties that is the difference of WIN or LOSE the game.
I remember as a young player getting a STUPID penalty out of anger and sitting in the penalty box and getting scored on and losing the game. That feeling of letting my team down was enough to change my attitude and it was the last time I took a stupid penalty.
The player needs to control there behavior first and if that don't happen then it's the Coaches job to step in and take care of it.
