I thought Wisconsin owned the first period...

Truer words were never posted.

Don't want to overplay an "Ohio Against The World" theme. Mostly because half the schools out there are selling some variation of "Us Against The World." But it sure felt like the world was coming for us in that 1st Period. But when the clock hit 0:00 for the first time, the Pinion was still there.

...even in the second...

Badger greatness was certainly in evidence, particularly on their goal. Powerful odd-man rush; eye-opening skill by Maddie Wheeler on the finish.

And yet, slowly but surely the Buckeyes matched the Badgers compete level, and started winning our share of the loose pucks. Then more than our share.

It culminated in the two goal explosion from Kiara & Makenna. Zanon & Webster took the high road in more ways than one.

...and OSU owned the third.

The Buckeyes closed out the win in fine style. It felt like some of the brilliant closing jobs we saw in 2022 down the stretch.

I can't believe Curl committed that penalty at such a crucial juncture for Wisconsin!
The Britta Curl Brain Cramp finished the job. I highly doubt that the Veteran Curl will be making that mistake again.

osualum86 and I had a discussion about Curl and her ill timed penalty and he brought up she's Wisconsin's version of Abby Murphy on a slightly lesser scale in being very aggressive on the ice. That being said and if true it was simply in her nature to let that aggressiveness that seems so ingrained in her style that it took over in the heat of the moment and committed what can only be called a bone headed penalty. What's the old saying?
"Play smarter, not harder"

I've said myself long before last that UW doesn't have an Abby Murphy, but if we did, it would be Britta Curl. But not "slightly less", VERY much less.

Curl is also a three-time NCAA champ with a reasonable shot at becoming the first four time champ; 8th in school history in goals scored, 11th in total points. So a frustration penalty here and there, we'll live with.

Both are physical; both are supremely talented. So certainly there's a comparison there. But IMHO, Abby plays more on the edge than Britta does.

Totally agree with "play smarter." Again IMHO, Britta usually does. Hence my conclusion that the penalty we're discussing was out-of-character.

But hey, I could be wrong. It's not like I'm watching the Badgers game in and game out.

I am way late on this, but Ohio State took game one last night by a final score of 3-1. After a scoreless first period, Wisconsin's Maddi Wheeler scored on a well-executed 3-on-1 to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Ohio State answered with two goals of their own from Kiara Zanon and Makenna Webster to take a 2-1 lead into the final intermission. Ohio State's Jenna Buglioni added an empty-net goal late in the third period to make the final score 3-1. The Buckeyes ended up outshooting the Badgers 34-29. Buckeye netminder Raygan Kirk stopped 28 of the 29 shots she faced to get the win. Badger backstop Jane Gervais saved 31 of the 33 shots she faced. The two teams are backat it tonight at 9:00 pm EST.

Britta done a few of those this year, but they have not all been called. I think she crushed a St Cloud player in that same area and had no call a few weeks ago. Murphy is constantly getting into it behind the play whereas Curl is doing it in the heat of the moment in a play.

Abby Murphy had an empty net game clincher today, and afterward Duluth's Claira Van Wieren ran her, WELL after there was any hope of stopping the play, etc. If I had anything to do with it, Van Wieren would get suspended. COMPLETLY uncalled for.

Duluth plays a dirtier game.

There was a similar moment a couple of weeks ago in the NHL. It is a violation of one of the unwritten rules of hockey to shoot a slap shot into an empty net. Anything other than a gentle tap in is under the unwritten rule considered to be a show of disrespect and, at least in the NHL, requires an act exactly like what Van Wieren did.

Unwritten rules are stupid. Personally I agree with robertearle that Van Wieren should receive some penalty in addition to the in game 2 minutes that she received this afternoon. A suspension seems appropriate.

In Van Weiren's defense I believe it should be noted that she went aggressively after Murphy clearly intending to run her except that the Assistant Referee was totally on top of the moment and arrived on the scene only a moment after the UMD player and quickly escorted her away before things really had much of a chance to get really ugly.

The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals from Kenzie Hauswirth, but could not make it stand as the Badgers came roaring back to earn a 4-2 victory in the regular season finale. Casey O'Brien scored the first of her two goals in the second period to bring Wisconsin to within 2-1 heading into the final intermission. O'Brien would score her second goal in the third period to tie things up at 2-2. Laila Edwards would score the game-winner later in the third period and would also add an empty-netter at the end to make the final score 4-2. Ohio State outshot the Badgers 35-24. Wisconsin goaltender Ava McNaughton stopped 33 of the 35 shots she faced to get the win. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 20 of the 23 shots she faced in the loss. The loss ended Ohio State's 16-game winning streak. Next up for both teams will be the first round of the WCHA Playoffs. Wisconsin will host St. Thomas and Ohio State will host Bemidji State.
