Ohio State Buckeyes 2021-2022 ... Destination: Happy Valley

PBG - Best of luck to you and the Buckeyes this weekend. I'll be at the Northeastern game then back home in time to catch all of the OSU game. Does Maltais plan to return to the team next year? She's quite the talented player.

Everything I am hearing indicates that we are getting Emma Maltais back next season. Cannot wait to see her back in Scarlet & Gray!

Lindsay, thank you for posting this here! Jeff Svoboda and Dylan Tyrer did a great job with the story and video!

They certainly did and the coverage was earned. I’m enjoying all the celebration OSU is getting and hope they are ready to go on Saturday.

Not sure if Thiele is a forgone conclusion in net or if Braendli will take over. That is a plot twist I didn’t see coming but starter to wonder about during the Olympics.

Final Score From Thursday, March 10th
Quinnipiac 4
Syracuse 0

Quinnipiac Polls Well
Survey participants are often asked to use a familiar five point scale when crafting their responses. You know the one. Strongly Agree/Agree/Neutral/Disagree/Strongly Disagree.

After the 1st Period, respondents were asked if Quinnipiac was the better team. Most chose "Agree." After the 2nd Period, most "Strongly Agreed." The final score supports those perceptions.

Here at Ohio State, it was our privilege to host this First Round match-up. We look forward to competing with a fine Bobcat team in the Second Round.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Syracuse Honorable Mention: (tie) Tatum White and Anna Leschyshyn
Tatum & Anna are power forwards on the Orange 2nd Line. They use size and determination to their advantage; particularly when there's a battle for a loose puck. The pair plays with a nice synergy; frequently finding each other with crisp passes. Obviously neither got a scoring point on Thursday, but they made their presence felt.

Quinnipiac Honorable Mention: (tie) Sadie Peart and Jess Schryver
Quinnipiac's offense came through with balanced scoring. Excluding the empty-netter for the moment, each of the Top 3 lines had a goal. So there were lots of worthy candidates for the Stars. Kudos to Sadie; her nifty tip resulted in the 3rd Bobcat Goal. Congrats to Jess; she got behind the Orange defense in the slot. When teammate Courtney Vorster pushed the puck through to her, Schryver made no mistake with the point-blank opportunity.

#3 Star: Jessica DiGirolamo, Syracuse
IMHO, Jessica is the best player on the Syracuse team. She plays fast, smart & strong. Let's not forget courage. DiGirolamo led all players with 6 Blocked Shots. And then there's leadership. Playing Right 'D' on the first pair, it's easy to see how Jessica earned that 'C.'

#2 Star: Zoe Boyd, Quinnipiac
Playing Left 'D' on the first pair, Zoe is a leader on the 'Q' Defense. She's also a complete player who had Assists on the final 2 Bobcat Goals. Finishing the game at +2, she had some company. But no one bested that number.

#1 Star: Taylor House, Quinnipiac
The Bobcats are deep at forward. As noted above, it's hard to pick just one player out an excellent group. But I believe that Taylor's breakthrough goal was the key moment of the game.

Half the contest went by before anyone scored. It took persistent effort to break down a hard-working Syracuse defense. But when House slammed in the opening goal, the Bobcats gained considerable momentum. It started Quinnipiac down the road to victory. They didn't look back.

Ohio State advanced to the Frozen Four with a hard-fought victory over a game Quinnipiac squad who gave the Buckeyes all they could handle in this one, especially the Bobcat goaltender, who stopped 73 of the 77 shots she faced. The Bobcats struck first in this one on a goal by Ann-Frederik Naud to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Ohio State's Riley Brengman answered for the Buckeyes to knot it at 1-1 and that is how the first period ended. Ohio State's Clair DeGeorge scored in the second period to give the Buckeyes the lead at 2-1. Later in the period the Bobcats' Maya Labad scored to tie the game again at 2-2 at the second intermission. Patty Kazmaier favorite Sophie Jaques made her presence felt with a goal in the third period to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead. The Bobcats were not done and scored a goal late in the third period with the goalie pulled to send it into overtime. 80 minutes was not quite enough time to settle this one, so it went into a second overtime where Ohio State's Clair DeGeorge scored her second goal of the game to win it for the Buckeyes. Ohio State outshot the Bobcats in this 77-22 with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping 19 of the 22 shots she faced. Bobcat netminder Corinne Schroeder stopped 73 of the shots she faced and kept her team in the game in this one. Quinnipiac's season ends, and the Buckeyes' season continues with a Frozen Four matchup with Yale, who defeated Colgate earlier today.

Final Score From Saturday, March 12th
Ohio State 4
Quinnipiac 3
(2 O.T.)
Wait For It... Wait For It...

This is the 23rd Season of Women's D-1 Hockey at Ohio State. Saturday was the first time the Buckeyes have had an NCAA Tournament Home Game. We've been waiting. For a game like this. To come into our lives.

As for the end result, the players needed a little extra time to settle things. 22 minutes, 5 seconds of bonus hockey, to be exact. So still more patience was required. And as we know, the waiting is the hardest part.

The wait was worth it.

Both teams were spectacular in this NCAA Quarterfinal. After the game, one neutral observer opined that this contest might turn out to be the best game in the entire NCAA tournament. While I'm expecting a great show in the Frozen Four, he could just be right.

The shot totals suggest that this was a case of the An Irresistible Buckeye Force against an Immovable Bobcat Object. There is truth to that. But it's also the case that the Bobcats are pretty tough to resist, and the Buckeyes are pretty tough to move. SOG notwithstanding.

The humble but hallowed OSU Ice Rink was sold out for the occasion. Despite the onset of Spring Break, the Pep Band was there, loud and proud. A good contingent of Quinnipiac fans controlled one section; Buckeye fans controlled the rest. Overall, the crowd was loud and engaged. But not raucous. It was too tense for raucous.

Ultimately we got an epic WCHA/ECAC match-up; one that proved the high quality of both conferences. The Buckeyes made the last play.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Quinnipiac Honorable Mention: (tie)Ann-Frederik Naud; Maya Labad and Taylor House
All 3 Quinnipiac goal scorers need to be mentioned. Yes, there was little puck luck involved on the first two tallies. The first banked in off a Buckeye. The second was a goalmouth collision with the puck popping up into the air; but with the necessary momentum to carry it into the net. Of course both of these goals were the product of hard work. And the Buckeyes certainly had some puck luck too. More on that later.

As for Taylor's goal, no puck luck needed. Operating with an extra attacker, the Bobcats put on intense pressure in the OSU Zone. When the puck got to House, she slid a low shot under the sprawling Buckeye Defense, sending us to overtime.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Amanda Thiele
22 SOG isn't a high total. But without Thiele's fine play in the nets, the Buckeyes don't win this game.

One save stands out. About 3 minutes after the Bobcats opened the scoring, Maya Labad came in on an uncontested clean breakaway. Maya had plenty of time to pick and choose her move. But Amanda stood her ground and stuffed the shot. If the Bobcats had gone up 2-0 at that point, who knows? That's one hypothesis I'm glad we didn't test.

#3 Star: Riley Brengman, Ohio State
After the game I had a quick conversation with osualum86. He smiled and suggested a #1 Star. My response was that it was going to be tough, since there were so many good candidates to choose from. While quite true, there's a fuller story. I actually had my 3 Stars picked already. What was vexing me was how to rank the group of 3.

Part of me really, really wanted to put Riley at #1. Her big shot at the end of the first period tied it up and got the Buckeyes back into the game. It snuffed out a creeping fear that maybe this wasn't our night. Then, on the GWG, Brengman started the play with a well chosen pinch along the left wing boards. If Riley doesn't pinch there, who knows? Maybe we're still playing.

Anyhow, I hope Riley never forgets the huge role she played in winning this game.

#2 Star: Corrine Schroeder, Quinnipiac
In the end, Corrine's Bobcats came up a goal short. But Schroeder's goalkeeping was magnificent. Paetyn Levis had 12 SOG. Gabby Rosenthal had 14 SOG. Liz Schepers had 15 SOG. The result of all that shot production, by three of the most talented Buckeyes? ZERO goals. That's beyond remarkable. That's totally insane.

73 Saves in an NCAA Playoff Game is also pretty crazy. Between Overtime 1 and Overtime 2, I wondered aloud if anyone had ever made 100 saves in the NCAA tournament. Well, we didn't make it quite that far into the stratosphere. But Schroeder handled the very heavy workload with a calm professionalism.

If Corrine can see the puck, and a shot comes straight on goal, I really have no idea how you beat her on the glove side. Her glove hand is that good. But with a little puck luck, sometimes the impossible becomes possible. Keep reading.

#1 Star: Clair DeGeorge, Ohio State
Now about that GWG. Brengman's successful pinch sent the puck to Paetyn Levis behind the goal line. Paetyn's centering pass went to Clair, to the left of the Bobcat net. Highly contested shot. The puck appeared to use a defender's stick as an uphill ramp. Up the ramp, and magically into the upper right hand corner of the net. So there is at least one path past Schroeder's glove. A little puck luck? Gotta admit that. But no one deserved the goal more than the hard-working DeGeorge.

As if that wasn't enough, Clair also a had a key Power Play goal, coming off passes from Sophie Jaques and Madison Bizal. That one put OSU ahead 2-1 at the time. So DeGeorge was a difference-maker twice over.

Wrapping this up: Giving the #1 Star to the overtime goal scorer is a pretty conventional decision. To say nothing of an accurate prediction by osualum86. And this was a game with a little bit of everything. But I'm comfortable saying it's the right choice.

On to the Frozen Four!

I believe that the NCAA Tournament record is 78 saves by Desirae Clark of Mercyhurst versus Harvard in 2005.

In regulation time? (smiling emoticon here)

Either way, that's a prodigious work load. I'm sure Clark battled as hard as Schroeder.

Ohio State advanced to the National Title Game Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Yale! After a scoreless first period, all three goals in this one were scored in the second period. The Bulldogs drew first blood on a goal by Tabea Botthof to take a 1-0 lead. That would be Yale's only goal of the game as the Buckeyes came back with goals from Paetyn Levis and Jennifer Gardiner to take a 2-1 lead into the final intermission. The Buckeyes would make that lead stand with a 2-1 victory. Ohio State outshot Yale 38-24 in this one with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping 23 of the 24 shots she faced in the win. Yale goaltender Gianna Meloni stood tall as well, stopping 36 of the 38 shots she faced. Yale had a great season and should be very proud of what they accomplished this season! The Buckeyes will play one more game for all the marbles against a very familiar opponent, the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. UMD defeated Northeastern 2-1 in 2 OT in the early game today. Game time is 4:00 pm EST Sunday.

.

Brengman is having a heck of a tourney. 2 assists yesterday. The 2nd goal, Gardiner’s was so highlight reel that the defender (Brengman) who made the pass under pressure from the OSU zone didn’t get a ton of credit.
Awesome job by her.

Huge credit to Yale. Really enjoyed watching them. They are clearly good but also played with so much heart and joy. Fun to watch.

Hello from the geographic center of the State Of Pennsylvania. It's been a great Frozen Four so far. Of course we've got a pretty important game coming up in a couple of hours.

I've done "3 Stars" posts for many years. But as a rule, only for home games at the OSU Ice Rink. My initial plan for this weekend was to post my "Top 10 Memories From The 2022 Frozen Four." (Rather than 3 Stars for each game) Most likely I'll stick with that.

However I have had some inquiries. So maybe I'll revert to my usual format for this one special weekend. Either way, I'll post after getting back to Columbus. I'll have 5+ hours in the car to make the decision.

Go Bucks!!!

Congratulations to The Ohio State University Buckeyes! And most of all, to osualum and pgb, who stuck it out through thick and thin, and then some more thin. Your patience has been rewarded.

Ditto. I know the feeling when your team wins it all.

Yes, I feel great for the tOSU Posters. I hope Hockeybuckeye was around to see it as well.

Muzzy is one of the best women's hockey coaches on the planet, inheriting not much and turning it totally around.

Muzzy is a very good coach, but 7 or 8 transfers is a little much. Northeastern had two transfers too and UMD had Giguere. And I think even Yale had one. Kudos to OSU. DeGeorge was something.

Get used to it. Transfers in batches are the new norm in recruiting in all sports. ;-)

It has been on the uptick, both with a changing of the times and the advent of the portal, but I think the presence of the extra Covid year caused an extra surge this year. And then in women's hockey, specifically, you also had all of the RMU kids who needed a new home.

Thank for the kind words everyone! It was a thrill, no question about it. Coach Muzerall inherited a group that had won 10 games in the 2015-16 season and went to a Frozen Four a couple seasons later. In her sixth season, she has taken this program to the top of the mountain. Unlike Ohio State's other NCAA Tournament games, the Buckeyes scored first in this one so it was not a come-from-behind win. Paetyn Levis, who ended up being named the Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player, opened the scoring for the Buckeyes in the second period after a scoreless first period. Naomi Rogge answered for the Bulldogs to tie it at 1-1 and that is how the second period ended. Clair DeGeorge opened the scoring in the third period to put the Buckeyes back up 2-1. UMD was not done and tied it on a laser from Elizabeth Giguere, 2-2. Ohio State's Kenzie Hauswirth got the game winner with 6:40 to go in the game. The Buckeyes controlled the puck so well late in the third period that Minnesota-Duluth could not get goaltender Emma Soderberg pulled until there were only 37 seconds left in the game. Ohio State outshot UMD 39-19 with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping 17 of the 19 shots she faced. Emma Soderberg stopped 36 of the 39 shots she faced. Ohio State finishes with a 32-6 record and a ten-game winning streak. Minnesota-Duluth finished a great season with a 27-12-1 record.
