Ohio State Buckeyes 2021-2022 ... Destination: Happy Valley

WI is fighting for their home ice lives as far as a 3/4 seed nationally goes, OSU has that locked up. Hopefully having nothing to play for (wink), shifts the Muzzinatorettes down a gear or 2 and UW can beat them, I'm not sure at full speed that UW has enough to hang with OSU. If Muzzy shortens the bench at least from a fitness/energy level it will be a fair fight since UW only has 3 lines. Hopefully Muzzy only trusts her top 2 lines.

Will you be coming up to enjoy the action Tim?

Somebody's sandbagging is pretty rusty. You can tell that you haven't had to exercise this skill much in recent years.

I'm trying to think back to UM threads of the last few years for inspiration (not last year though LOL).

No, I have not convinced my wife it would be a fun mini vacation to head in that direction. I could watch some hockey with our daughter and then 3 of us check the town out pre and post game. I did plant the seed pretty good for next year though. I would settle for a series weekend @ UMD, St. Thomas or UM and not the tourney.

It sounds like you are expecting a one-and-done WCHA Final Faceoff. What happened to the swagger from the beginning of the season? Have you no faith? :>)

Swagger seems to have taken a major hit after being swept by the Gophers in early December.

Our girls are on a mission. I am not going to make any bold predictions, but I am sure the "Muzzinator" (aka the WCHA Coach of the Year) will have our kids ready to go. I will not be there, but Mrs 86 and I have BTN+ so we will be watching. Actually, aren't these games on regular BTN (tv). I thought they were last year.

Posted my semis preview if anyone wants to read it. The words are short but the statistics are interesting I think, particularly how even the stats were among remaining teams.

WCHA Narrow

Should note that PP and PK factor in SHG, subtracting a PP conversion and adding a PK for each allowed / scored, respectively.

Ohio State took down the Badgers this afternoon by a final score of 2-1 to advance to the WCHA Final Faceoff Title Game. The Buckeyes will play the Gophers tomorrow at 2:00 pm EST. I will have more later when the box score is available.

After a scoreless first period, Wisconsin's Sophie Shirley got the Badgers on the board first and the Badgers led 1-0. The Buckeyes would get two goals later in the second period from Liz Schepers and Gabby Rosenthal to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Neither team scored in the third period and it ended with a 2-1 Ohio State victory. Wisconsin outshot the Buckeyes 34-18 with Amanda Thiele stopping 33 of the 34 shots she faced to get the win. Wisconsin goaltender Kennedy Blair stopped 16 of the 18 shots she faced. Ohio State will face the Minnesota Gophers tomorrow for the WCHA Final Faceoff Title with game time at 2:00 pm EST. Wisconsin's season will go on as they will hear their named called tomorrow night as the Badgers will be invited to the NCAA Tournament. Here is a link to the NCAA website and instructions on how to watch the selection show online.

Ohio State was very fortunate to win this game. The transition defense was terrible, and they didn't play with a lot of intensity. Wisconsin, who played only four defensemen for almost the entire game, was completely out of gas for the last ten minutes, but the Buckeyes couldn't put them away. The difference is that the Badger team that has no idea how to put the puck in the net showed up.

As a Minnesota fan, if I were confident that OSU would play the same way tomorrow, I'd feel really good about our chances. I am not confident of that.

OSU relies on frenetic pace and “relentless” forechecking. It’s very difficult to keep that up for 3 periods on neutral ice. On the one hand, this is why I don’t think they’ll win the Natty. But, on the other hand, their goalie may be the hottest in the country right now (certainly better than MN goaltenders) and that could get them the the WCHA and National titles.

Thiele didn't steal this game. She was good, but she wasn't great. Wisconsin was awful at converting chances into quality shots.

And I know you keep saying this about Ohio State and how they can't do this on neutral ice. That mostly means that you haven't actually watched them at Ridder over the last several years, because you're wrong. And failure on the forecheck wasn't Ohio State's problem today, either. It was after Wisconsin got the puck out of the zone that their real problems began. It wasn't just odd man rushes. Badgers were coming up the ice unmarked. Defensemen lost their man. The Badgers' only goal came on a play where the OSU defender should have had Shirley contained, at let her just walk on by.

I thought Thiele made several very good saves. I also didn’t see WI trapped in their own end like they were at OSU. And WI got more time & space today as was evident by the SOG difference.

You know I am not going to make any bold predictions (smile emoji), and I did not see much of the game, so I am going to take your word for it on how we played. Thankfully for us Buckeye fans, the things we did wrong vs Wisconsin are correctable. Should be a great game tomorrow!

S. Shirley has done that to a lot of D over the years; speed kills. As a whole, UW's forwards can make any team's defense look porous. For some reason, they can go long stretches where these chances don't change the scoreboard, and that isn't confined to this year's team.

OSU controlled the game for about a five-minute sequence, and that was enough to win (although if not for an ill-timed pass at the blue line, they may have gone on to blow the game open). That seems to be their pattern against UM as well. The Gophers can have the better of play for more minutes, but the Buckeyes are better at translating their seemingly-brief advantages into goals and wins. I thought that was a Maltais/Skaggs thing for the most part, but they aren't there, and it continues. OSU is good at doing what it needs to do to win hockey games, even against a Wisconsin team that isn't easy to defeat this time of year.

Just screamed joyously at my computer. Felt a little foolish. But then I realized it was the right thing to do.

Awesome tournament. Thank you, Buckeyes. Way to go.

Congratulations to your team on a nice comeback win, pgb-ohio. Even with a two goal lead after two I wasn't at all comfortable, and as it turned out for good reason.
