Ohio State 22-23 Are we Better Than You Think?

Nice that it was finally dealt with. Still, I don't understand the delayed reaction, particularly since the target was Dakota Joshua's brother and our AD is a black man. Maybe some signals got crossed by the B1G's initial response. In any event, the right thing was (belatedly) done and hopefully won't be a continued distraction from what's developing as a promising season.

Well the loss to LIU tonight was absolutely pathetic. The lack of discipline of this team falls on the coach for the unacceptable amount of penalties this team commits every game.
Lohrei's tackling a player and then cross checking him back to the ice was inexcusable. Next practice he should be made to bag skate and the entire team made to watch as example to cut the crap out!
We were slow and the defense laughable and the majority of our shots not even on net. This team has had spurts of greatness but the lack of consistency feels like we're back in the John Markell era.

Something is wrong with this program. This program has lost it’s way. It has been happening slowly since the Frozen Four year in 2018. Lack of discipline. Lack of effort. Lack of accountability. Lack of consistency. The recent racist comments by a player with no discipline until the racism became public shows deep problems that permeate through the whole program. All of these issues are readily observed by all in the men’s college hockey world. I’ve had friends in other parts of the USA and in Canada have been asking about the “decline” of this program since 2018. I can’t refute their observations any longer. The program and university has taken a hit negatively and this will affect recruiting negatively. Something needs to change. A few wins will “fix” the problems in the short term but the problems will resurface. Something needs to change. The problems permeate the whole program. New leadership is needed in all coaching/staff positions. Start new with the expectation that discipline, accountability, effort, consistency are going to be adhered to or you will be gone. I saw some of these same issues with the OSU Women’s Ice Hockey program in 2015-2016. Changes were made. Expectations were set and adhered to. The same needs to happen in the men’s program.

It's Buckeye week in BG. Even though the students are on break, the Slate will be full. Since neither of our programs will play Miami State, I guess the series is for this year's Ohio Cup.

Rec Room Rumble

It was a pleasant 2 hour ride up US 23. Scattered Snow Flurries set the tone. Sirius/XM kept the vehicle rocking. But would the trip back to Columbus be equally pleasant?

It would. The 5-2 Win made sure of that. But let's start at the beginning.

Parking: Seemed inefficient. Oh yeah. Some schools charge for parking at hockey games. I'm glad we don't. But we're probably the exception to the rule. Anyhow, parking at Perry Field House for 10 Bucks worked out well enough.

Attendance: 4412 Good Hockey People. A bit below capacity; but I sure didn't see many empty seats. And there were lots of people standing behind the glass at the South End.

What I saw for sure was a lot of Buckeye/Falcon blended families. They call the Pitt/West Virginia Football Game The Backyard Brawl. Call the OSU/BG Hockey Rivalry the Rec Room Rumble.

First Period: The Buckeyes started fast, and it was a good thing. The Falcons were in hot pursuit all night long. OSU drew a penalty just 32 seconds into the contest. While we didn't convert that one, the resulting momentum led to 1st Period dominance. When a second opportunity came at 13:20, Cam Theising cashed in. Ultimately Cam also had the GWG, making him the star of the game for the Buckeyes. But at this juncture it was 1-0 after one.

First Intermission: Fan Puck Toss. A nearby Dad assessed his odds from Row 17. Not so hot. He ventured down to about Row 5 and made the throw. Darned if the good man didn't bring home the bacon. In this case, a gift card. Cool to see the guy pull that off.

Second Period: Whenever these two teams get together, Dublin native Alex Barber always wants to show his hometown University what it missed out on. Friday night was no exception. Alex tied the game halfway through the 2nd; and later added an assist. Barber was the star of the game for the Falcons.

Second Intermission: Went to the concession stand and ordered a pretzel. Granny carefully laid out my options. When I selected salt, she glared her disapproval. Granny didn't verbalize, but the look on her face said it all. "You sure you need that salt? You're no spring chicken yourself." I stood by my order and enjoyed every single one of the over-sized granules.

Third Period: When BG killed off the 5x3, it looked like maybe it wasn't our night. The came a PP conversion, with Scooter Brickey restoring the 1 goal lead. But less than 3 minutes later, we were tied again. A back and forth battle befitting a Rec Room Rumble.

When the Falcons finally broke, they broke hard. The Buckeyes exploded for 3 goals in less than a minute. Thrilling for those of us backing the Visitors.

Postgame: Buckeye fans did a little chirping. A few Falcon feathers were ruffled. On our side of the Rec Room, we'd be well advised to remember that BG is a tough out, and that we've got a rematch at the Schott right away on Saturday Night.

The Drive Home: Near the Wood County/Hancock County line, gas dropped to $2.75 a gallon. I took advantage; and was in good company. Based on apparel, lots of other Buckeye fans were doing the same.

Back in Franklin County, nearing the I-270/US23/SR315 Big Fix, I spotted a Baron's luxury coach. The Buckeye team bus? They chose the Southbound 315 option, so I say yes. Of course it could have been the Gardening Club, starting out on an overnight run to Dollywood. But geez. I'd hate to think I wasted all that good karma on the Gardening Club.

Either way, thank you Buckeyes for a job well done.

Road Trips: Recommended.

Saturday Rematch At The Schott: Recommended. These teams will put on another good show; be there!

Mea Culpa: Opened up the diary for you guys tonight. Hope you didn't mind.

Nice recap. Thank you. I'm very happy that this seems to have become an annual series. It's good for both programs, but particularly BG after the way Miami of Ohio did your program dirty during realignment. In any event, it also seems as though BG has joined us in freezing out Miami of Ohio and leaving them to get passed around as the NCHC's gimp. Should be a good game tonight and one that I can actually watch on tv.

You're very welcome. And a huge thumbs up to the annual series with BG. May it always be so.

Also like the home and home format, as opposed to 2 home games every other year.

I respect your point of view. But I'd rather compete directly with Miami. And win, of course.

I've just really enjoyed the in-state rivalries over the years. Love the chance to go to commutable road games. Heck, I wish Kent State would somehow rise again.

One thing I forgot to mention in my long post. It sure felt funny to see "CCHA" prominently displayed around The Slate, yet not be a part of the league. But kudos to the 8 current members for reviving the name.

I've often wondered whether we should have been playing them the last 8 years, so we could take back the all-time series lead (which they didn't snag until 2009), but then I rethink it and say #$%@ 'em.

Beat down this weekend. Ohio Cup goes to the Buckeyes. Congrats.

Appreciate it. It's good to have the Cup, even though it's currently mythical.

I'm still in shock that the Buckeyes were able to bag 9 goals in the rematch. Hockey is a funny game. Sometimes you can't buy goal; sometimes you're generously rewarded for your efforts.

We started fast in both contests. It took 2.5 periods to finally breakthrough on Friday. The generous reward came Saturday, when we scored early & often. Go figure.

We were never in either game despite being tied going into the third on Friday. Time to do some serious soul searching in NW Ohio.

Ohio State is the biggest draw at BG. There were 4400+ in the Slate with the students out on holiday. While we like these home-and-home OOC matches and are glad OSU has made sure to keep this series going post B1G, it sure would be nice to be in the same league and get 4 games a year. Yeah, well...yeah....

IMHO you're being a little too hard on your team, which to my eye is a good .500 club. But clearly that's your call, not mine.

Good to hear the former, and obviously I personally experienced the latter. I believe these games are very beneficial to both schools, particularly on this year's schedule. December is a good month for Non-Conference play. And when the match-up is meaningful in and of itself, so much the better.

Over the years I've seen a fair number of teams basically take December off, then show up in January rusty and sluggish. This series serves as an antidote for that. Or at least it should.

Not happening. My sense is that you're 100% familiar with the reasons, so I won't drag you through the muck again. I'll just reiterate the hope that one OSU/BG series remains a permanent fixture on the schedule.

2nd half of the season starts this weekend with a rematch with Sparty. They owe Sparty a couple after that sweep in November. Only 2 home games of the month need 6 points this weekend. Cant be in attendance due to baseball convention in Nashville but ill be watching.

We got a great start to the 2nd half. The Buckeyes exploded out of the starting blocks on the first few shifts, and used the early goal to control most of the game.

The players and coaches will be the first to tell it wasn't perfect. But we got nice performances up & down the line-up. No rust in evidence on this 2nd half start. And a very nice turnaround from the games in East Lansing.

Hope we can complete the job this afternoon.

Payback was fun sweeping Sparty this weekend, especially with the 6-0 shutout. OSU scored every way possible with PP goals, shorty, multiple single 2 & 3 on one breakaways and a blistering slapper by Singleton. Won't be a fun ride back to East Lansing.

You might say #13 is unlucky. For opposing goaltenders.

Tate Singleton one-timers have become a thing. Authoritative and accurate, goalies have little chance. Singleton opened the scoring on Friday & had the second goal on Saturday.

Keep those Taters coming!

Nice weekend sweep of Sparty much needed as well. They are in position to get to 2nd place not sure they can catch the Gophers but just keep winning and see where it takes you. On to AA excited to see this Michigan team for the first time this year. Just dont get swept like they did last year.

Looking forward to seeing how this team matches up with Michigan. They proved they can play with Minnesota earlier in the year and won at Penn State which is a tough place to play but they have lost 4 straight at Michigan. Time to prove they can play with and beat them on their ice.

That was as dominant of a performance that I have ever seen at Yost. From start to finish they were all over Michigan. Even down 1-0 for that short time they never wavered. Cant sweep if you dont win on Friday. they only have 1 sweep at Yost since 1989 and you know Michigan will come out firing tomorrow. Find a way to get at least 1 point tomorrow.
