Ohio State 22-23 Are we Better Than You Think?

Pretty big weekend with the Gophers coming in. The next 3 series will tell us where they are. All Big Ten series and 2 of them against teams picked ahead of them in the standings. The other is a much improved Spartan team. Saw them beat BG and they looked faster and much better and played with a edge.

I'm rather surprised we regained in the polls what we lost in our series against UConn by sweeping Bentley. Getting dinged 5 positions was rather harsh but I have little respect for the men's polls, especially when they think they can justify Minnesota at #1 with two losses and #2 St.Cloud is undefeated!

Newbie on this site doesn’t make me a newbie with OSU men’s ice hockey. Either they are underachieving every year or they just aren’t very good.

Either way the answer is no and this will be another disappointing season.

I guess the Ohio State Frozen Four jersey I own is from an underachieving season eh?
Same goes for knocking off the #1 team in the country tonight. I've got all 59 years of OSU hockey under my belt to back up my opinion. I'll add one more opinion - when Covid hit were were 3 days away from playing Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament and most likely beating them for a record 5 times in a single season with a team quite capable of winning the National Championship!
You're quite welcome to your opinion, that's what forum is for but don't take it personal when someone here counters your opinion.

While most of us who've followed OSU hockey for years would like more consistency and Frozen Fours, I think you paint a very unfair picture of the program. It's in a state that until recently didn't have much of either a youth hockey or adult fanbase culture. It's never had a proper arena going from the too small OSU Rink to the far too cavernous Schott. Throw in a fair amount of neglect at the hands of the AD, and I think you can make an argument that they've overachieved as much as underachieved. The fact that both the men's and women's teams play in the arenas they do in light of Ohio State's athletic department and overall university resources is a god damned crime.

And historically, Ohio State's pretty much on par with the other two Ohio D1 programs (minus BG's NC of course). Miami was complete mediocrity until they caught a hot young coach in the early 2000's and have seemed to have regressed to their historical norm after that nice 8-9 year run crashed and burned. BG had York as an up and comer and won a NC, but they've been mediocre or worse more often than not since then.

At the end of the day, Ohio State is never going to be a hockey blueblood, so I don't think comparing it to Minnesota or UND is fair. Right now, I think the program is doing well, has a great coach that it needs to hold onto and is worth our support.

Frozen Four Jersey from 2018 was a nice season but isn’t 2022-2023. Beating #1 Minnesota, lol. Minnesota RPI 17. “When covid hit” isn’t 2022-2023.

Since 2018, since “when covid hit” has been disappointing and underachieving or maybe they were just bad. I remember games against BGSU, Lowell, Penn State where OSU didn’t show up and were down by big scores early and lost by bigger scores. Not motivated.

2022-2023: Are we better than you think? In my opinion, No. It comes down to “What Have You Done Lately?” Not much.

Hopefully Coach Muzerall in a subpar rink winning the National Championship will help pressure other coaches to do better in all aspects of their jobs. No excuses needed, just produce teams that show up every night and have a quality effort.

Who compared OSU to Minnesota or UND? Not me. I just see too many times when this team doesn’t show up, doesn’t bring any effort, get down big in the 1st period and doesn’t make any adjustments and lose bad.

I will compare them to the OSU Women’s Ice Hockey Team under Muzerall. In her early years they would be overmatched against Minnesota and Wisconsin but they showed up from the start and played 200 foot hockey with the best effort they could muster and worked hard and improved.

Coach Muzerall winning in the OSU ice rink is amazing. She doesn’t make excuses for crappy facilities. She just produces a motivated big effort team with what she has a

Playing a 60 minute 200 foot hockey game with great effort should be the expectation and the men don’t do that too many times. I’m not talking winning games, I’m talking being motivated from the start and giving their best effort for 60 minutes.

I think you're putting too much emphasis on last year's late season collapse. That was a team that had lost its senior leadership and was picked to finish last in the conference, yet they found themselves ranked in the top 10 and staring down a 2-seed. Yes, they lost their focus and collapsed down the stretch. It was disappointing, but not shocking, given the lack of experience and leadership. This year, they were picked 4th (5th?) in the conference and find themselves ranked #8. Let's see what happens.

From an outside prospective, I agree with you Eddie. If you look at OSU, they are doing very well for being in the B1G. They trade blows with the Irish and PSU and typically beat MSU and Wisconsin. Are they Minnesota or Michigan, no, but it is clear to an outsider OSU doesn't pour the resources or place a value on hockey. I work many die hard OSU fan and grads barely anyone knows OSU hockey exists and couldn't tell you what building they play in. Most 10 year old kids around the cities in MN could tell you where Minnesota plays hockey. They more than likely could name most of the in state D1 hockey programs. I suspect the same with UND. In Southwest Ohio, very few people care about hockey. Those that do are transplants like myself.

BGSU has the same late season collapse issue that OSU does. Look how many NCAAs they missed being the first team out.

Personally, I think OSU Hockey is doing a great job for what little support they get from the University.

Remember, it always could be worse. You could be Wisconsin and have all the resources/legacy/support in the world, but end up a perennial cellar dweller.

Pretty big weekend coming up. Michigan State is a much improved team. I saw them in person at BG and they play fast and much harder than the last couple years. Frist conference series on the road but with most teams having games in hand they need to get 4 points at least.

Coming out of East Lansing with 0 points is very disappointing. The lack of discipline is very concerning thats 3 games in a row they have taken unnecessary penalties that led to goals and led to guys not getting ice time. 4 games in a row giving up 4 goals is also concerning. They lost battles each night in front of Dobes and led directly to 3 goals. They showed they can play but the game is 60 minutes not 20 and that is what they played each night. ND coming to town next week and now they have to find a way to get better and fix whats wrong.

Our defense was better last night giving up only two goals and holding off ND's efforts with their goalie pulled. Penalties were still a concern.
we pulled out of the 2-2 tie with a 2 on 1 goal, a PP goal and an empty netter to win 5-2.
The women also won their game so here's hoping that both sweep.

Has anyone heard of Kamil Sadlocha, OSU men’s ice hockey player, getting a game misconduct against MSU Saturday game, for using racial slurs against a MSU player? I A referee heard him and kicked him out of the game. I haven’t heard anything. He played the next week against Notre Dame the next week.

As a MSU fan who rarely invades the boards of other teams, the fact OSU has said nothing is troubling. Jagger only came forward publicly after it was clear the racial remarks by Sadlocha were not going to be publicly acknowledged and condemned. At the least there should have been a statement stating OSU does not condone racism and Sadlocha should have made a public apology.

I was there in East Lansing. I wondered what he said to get kicked out. Now we know and I cant say enough that is shouldnt or cant be tolerated. There is no room for this in any form. I would hope the university would taken action but even if they do now it will only be looked on as a reaction.

Parts of the OSU statement. IMO this is BS, I don't know how in 2022 a public university's athletic student is only punished with a light tap on the wrist.

“The Ohio State Department of Athletics and the men’s hockey program worked collaboratively with the Big Ten Conference to come to a resolution in response to the allegation of misconduct toward the Big Ten sportsmanship policy. Ohio State is focused on providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all. Our Buckeye Inclusion committee has done an outstanding job with providing education and awareness across our department, both for students and staff. We are committed to recognizing our remarkable diversity and utilizing our core values to ensure everyone attending or participating in an athletic event feels safe and welcome.”

"The conference office collected and evaluated information from the Big Ten Conference ice hockey officiating crew, The Ohio State University (OSU), Michigan State University (MSU) and available video footage stemming from an incident involving ice hockey student-athletes from both member institutions at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing on November 11, 2022. The conference supports the decision by the official to levy a game misconduct penalty on OSU. Due to the absence of indisputable evidence presented to the conference, the conference has not imposed further disciplinary action."

An impartial 3rd part heard it, gave the player a game misconduct which is the highest punishment he can hand out. He didn't ask for replay where he could hear those words being used. He knew what he heard. If OSU/B1G isn't going to believe the person they hired/certified to enforce the rules of the game, what is the point of having them? Why then are coaches/players punished worse than Kamil for saying bad things about how a game is called? Kamil got less of a punishment than if it was a dirty hit. Those usually include a suspension. This is complete and utter BS. I hope the OSU fans don't tolerate this and force the school to act accordingly.

OSU alumni here. I find OSU response totally unacceptable. If the referee heard it then that should all that is needed. More discipline should have happened. This racist comment was directed at MSU player Jagger Joshua, brother of former OSU player Dakota Joshua.

I find OSU response laughable considering someone left racist graffiti in a campus building on November 14th and OSU “leadership” made a big stink and put out the following statement. From Dr. Johnson twitter page. Thus statement rings totally hollow.

https://president.osu.edu/story/what-we-stand

if this player continues to play, I will not be attending OSU men’s hockey games. This player should be booed every time he touches the puck.

Also an OSU alum that's been with this program through its ups and downs since the Pooley brothers. Yeah, I think enough has come to light that the player should be sent packing. Having had Dakota Joshua recently go through this (though from fans; not sure if a player ever did it), Ohio State should be particularly sensitive to this and should be ZERO tolerance here.
