Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

I finally got it turned on (always let Mrs 86 on the computer first). I can't comment on the game because I only saw the last part of it. The Bucks and Bobcats skated to a 1-1 tie (no shootout in this one). I can live with a tie tonight if we can come out and win tomorrow. Maybe someone who saw the entire game can comment on how we played tonight. We only gave up one goal, so it would appear the blue liners and Hjelle did their job. Maybe someone who was watching can comment on our scoring chances or possible lack thereof.

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Escaped with a tie otherwise known as a poor mans split. Where to start? We did more wrong than right. Defense early on was sloppy again and the usual bad penalties taken in desperation when the D collapsed. I saw good individual effort but not a lot of team effort. Quinnipiac did a good job of controlling the neutral zone, converging and pinching us off the puck, intercepting the puck constantly. We were blind passing when clearing, usually putting it back on an opponent's stick and when we did try to do long passes we were telegraphing them badly.
On the plus, Brady did very well but the one he did let by, given the shooter's distance from the net, the angle and it was wide open he really should have had that one. Grecco's speed is great and his teammates should make better effort to get up ice when he rushes to take it in. Wasted effort when you have no one to pass it to. On our scoring chances later in the game I thought we had better opportunity but there was always one pass too many when we should have pulled the trigger. I liked the announcers as they seemed to be calling it fairly unbiased.
Anyone else see it as I did?

DITTO. Lucky to get the OT tie. I was hoping the Bucks would of come out strong like they did Saturday night at UMD.

I was home only for the 3rd period and let me tell you i am so disappointed in with the way they played for most of it. The PP to start the period was just plain awful and they gave up a shorty to boot. Better come with a much different effort than that in BG next weekend.

PP does seem probmatic and we are always teeing up our shots and not one timing, that allows the shooting lane to close up and the goalie get squared. The guy on Quinnipiac's thread noticed the same thing I've been questioning and that's why aren't our big guys being physical and delivering big hits? At 6'6" & 6'5" don't try to pretend you're a hands & finness type player!

The game was over when Peca scored the shorthanded goal on the 5:00 Major. The Bobcats Goalie Hartzell is huge for this team. This is the best Bobcat team I have seen in a few years.

The Buckeys are starting out this year like they did two years ago and can't find the back of the net. I will give it until the Christmas break. GO BUCKS GO.

The former staff used to read this board, but I seriously doubt the new one does. That said, just in case the new staff really does read this board you might consider having Umberger work with the team on shooting the puck this week instead of having him work with the defense. :D

Anyone heading to BG this weekend?
Fridays are not good for me to get out of Columbus early (I'll make the exception for at Miami - got tickets!). Saturday with a 5:30 kickoff I can't bring myself to miss the football game.

My grandmother was born in the Detroit suburb of Northville in 1891 and was a Tigers fan. I can still remember her talking about how great Ty Cobb was! lol!

I'll be there on Saturday (and if I can get rid of relatives early I might make Friday also).

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Mrs 86 and I are heading up Friday (got us a room) but I don't think we'll get out of work in time to get to the game. We will definitely be at Saturday's game. Mrs 86 is a BG grad so we will be a house divided this weekend! After last year's sweep (shootouts, but still a sweep to me), I am hoping for better results. BG's starting goalie (Hammond) is questionable (hyper-extended elbow), but Mrs 86 says they have a capable backup. She says if Hammond can practice tomorrow, it's likely he will play this weekend. It's his stick hand, so if he can hold his stick tomorrow in practice, he can play. Anyway, enough about BG's goalie, we need to go up there and at least split! Most pointed to this season as the season when we would start really showing some improvement and that's what I expect as well.

If one wants their team to possibly go all the way then wishing for splits are a thing of the past.

they can not split this series if they want to be considered a contender for a bye. 5 points is the worst that this hockey team can come away with this weekend.

I'm very interested in seeing if our style of play will change at all now the conference play is starting, such as using our big guys to deliver hard hits to wear our opponents down. I'm hoping Oz was holding them back in non-conference play to avoid injury but what else are they out there for?

I am very interested in seeing this team in person for the first time on friday night. We know what BG is going to try and do but this team is needs to find that grit it used for the first 3 months last year and attack BG from the get go. Conference season is here and no time better than that to get it going again. I would love to see the Big guys used in front of the net more on the PP. From what i saw in that 3rd period Quinnipac just made them dump the puck in and chase it well that didnt work very well because guys were standing still at the blue line. Once they did get control no one got to the net(we have seen that story before) and that big man in net ate up everything.

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Point taken. Hope the guys can pull it off.

I AGREE. I don't expect the Bucks to win every game , but I just want them to compete. I like the old saying, " It's not if you WIN or LOSE the game , it's how you play the game." :)

I would love to see this team play like they did against UMD on Saturday night of that series. WOW , they were awesome and that's a good example of a game they WON. Win or lose that game is not the question, it's how they played that game with hockey heart that made the difference. GO BUCKS GO.

It's a nice saying but unless you're the CCHA tournament champion it is all about wins & losses when it comes to NCAA selection in March.
