Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Actually this time we would be losing to OHSAA Girls Basketball :p Also I think some of those presale #'s count PSL holders in the 2nd deck, but once gameday comes and goes its tickets scanned.

Thanks for the correction. So, OSU Mens Hockey, in addition to OHSAA State Wrestling, also gets the boot for OHSAA Girls Basketball (another event that could be held in St. John Arena).

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

Maybe Pgb is onto something about building an arena that only seats 7,000!
In your heart, you know I'm right.;) And at least on this issue, so is MUhawks628.

Yes, Ohio State is a leader in intercollegiate athletics. But real leaders are shrewd enough to take advantage of great ideas developed by others. Denver's Magness and Miami's new Goggin would be great role models for a new Ice Center at Ohio State.

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

If it's all about packing the place, then shoot, let's just save our money and go back to playing mens games at the OSU Ice Rink. Just kidding, of course. To be honest, our facilities are killing both our programs right now (mens and womens), so I would be happy with any brand-new hockey-only facility, even if they shortchange it and decide to build something that only holds 5,000 or 6,000 (too small, IMHO). I would be fine with Pgb's 7,000 figure like the University of Denver built. My magic number at this point is 8,000, but I would settle for 7,000 (haha, like I would have any say in the matter).
If I had won the 350 million powerball last year not only would a new arena been built but I would have set it's size AND named it!
Ohio State is second to none in boot licking big money donors (and kissing another part of anatomy). LOL!

Talking about new arenas. I saw that there building a new gym attached to the Schotts by the back parking area & ticket lobby? Anyone know about this deal?

Had the exact same thought. Tell you what. Next time the Powerball Jackpot gets oversized, we'll each buy a ticket. Winner gets to design the new rink. Deal?

Haha, Pgb, ok, I admit it, you're right! :D What can I say, I like to dream big! I dream of a 10,000-seat arena for the men (with no empty seats ... sold out every game), and an adjacent womens arena that holds 3,000 (like Minnesota's setup). One thing nice about a 7,000 seat arena is they could bid on NCAA Regionals, maybe the IIHF Womens Worlds, now that would be awesome. In regard to Goggin, from what I read and understand (admit I have yet to get to a game there) it's a great venue, but I think 3,500 seats is way too small. I really don't think we should go smaller than 7,000. Oh, and count me in on that powerball thing! Hey, Pgb, I will even go with your name for it ... Ohio Ice Arena, or was it Ohio Ice Center?

Basketball Practice Gym

Second practice gym so men's and women's can practice at same time. If you build a hockey arena, build it small (meaning one you can fill). Creates a demand for tickets and some excitement. If you have been to Huntington Park downtown, you know what I am talking about. Build a stadium that is too small for the Friday/Saturday crowd to force people to go to less attractive games.

I agree with your philosophy for building. I would say 5-7 Thousand would be enough.

That would be great but I wonder if the NCAA will consider it given the reason that they won't hold a Frozen Four on our campus again.
After we hosted they received many complaints that it was extremely inconvenient that there were no restaurants, not enough hotels, and other amenities within walking distance.
Now I think Nationwide has a good shot at a Frozen Four as everything a fan attending could want is all within an easy walk of the arena.

Re: Ohio State 2013/2014 - Third year in Oz

I dont think the NCAA is giving regional's to on campus arenas anymore.
I have wondered how the NCAA picks regional venues as they have made some pretty bad choices in the past.
When we played at the Pepsi Arena in Albany in 2004 the building was so warm and humid they couldn't keep the ice frozen, there were puddles all over the playing surface.
Skating through that stuff all game long exhausted our players.

I was at that regional and that was awful to watch. I think they stopped giving the regionals on campus because of the unfair advantage it gives to the home team. I know Denver really complained with they went to Yost and lost.

Well that brings up another question, is it OK to have a regional on a campus site if that college's team isn't playing there?
North Dakota's hockey only arena comes to mind as an exceptional building to play in and other schools as well either have recently or will be building new facilities such as Penn State.

I would be ok with that but i dont think the school would agree to that.

You may be right but with a lot of schools if it brings in enough money they may go for use of their facility.
Now I'm curious what the NCAA pays for arena use. I mean do they offer a set price for hosting a regional or is it negotiated with each potential site? And to think when I was young I thought by my current age I'd know everything! lol!

My understanding is that regionals are now always off-campus. Not sure if the rule is written or unwritten, but it does seem to be consistently followed. Note that North Dakota was another team that complained quite bitterly about being sent to Yost for a regional. In contrast, bidding on Women's Worlds is a cool idea.

In regard to Goggin, from what I read and understand (admit I have yet to get to a game there) it's a great venue, but I think 3,500 seats is way too small. I really don't think we should go smaller than 7,000.
Agreed, 3,500 would be too small for OSU. Goggin is a good example for style/amenities/two ice sheets. Magness is the better example on the size factor.

Oh, and count me in on that powerball thing! Hey, Pgb, I will even go with your name for it ... Ohio Ice Arena, or was it Ohio Ice Center?
Ohio Ice Center. Because I'm counting on two ice sheets -- arguably two arenas -- contained within one center. The name also plays off of Ohio Stadium and Schottenstein Center. In this case, derivative is good.:)

But remember one of us has to win Powerball first. If HockeyBuckeye wins it, he gets the naming rights.:D

Not a bad thought, but there's a basic problem with it. The NCAA actively tries to "protect the gate" by guaranteeing that any host team gets to play at their own site -- provided they qualify for the tournament in the first place. This does create some unfairness. But attendance is a significant problem at the regionals; sending host teams elsewhere would only make the numbers that much worse. The current policy is a compromise. Keep teams close to home to protect the gate; but don't let anybody play on their own campus, because then the home-ice advantage is too great.

Makes sense. I really wouldn't care one way or another providing that doesn't created a shortage of arenas that can keep good ice at that time of year. Again 2004 regional at Pepsi Arena will always come first and foremost to my mind as the worst ice I have ever seen played on in my life!
