Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

4 hours to faceoff.

It was announced 4 will wear the C this year: Albert, Duddy, Somma, Boyd.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

WHAT A JOKE.

Losing to Robert Morris. Again losing to a team we should of beat. The effort was so inconsistant. What the HELL is going to happen when we play really good teams in the CCHA!!!!

I know that teamwork is 100%. 50% Coaching and 50% players. We win as a team and we lose as a team. But the old hockey saying is " Hard work beats talent , when talent don't work hard. " Ohio State has more talent than Robert Morris , but they were just hungry for the WIN.

The Coaching needs to rotate there younger guys to build a stronger team this year and towards the future. Rotate your Freshman and Sophomore players more. Coach , you can't WIN games with all Freshman at this level. Disapline the players that are taking stupid penaltys. I know your new system will take time , but this year is already starting out like the old Coach Markell's bad habits.

Players like Albert and Dries need to keep it simple and get the puck to the net. No more fancy stick work and toe-pulls that never get a shot to the net. That fancy stuff is for the PeeWee youth levels. Some Freshman and upperclassmen are hurting more than helping by taking very stupid penalty's. Forwards back check and pick up a player to help the defense. Defense pay attention to where the opponent is in front of the net. When attacking from the blue line, make sure your shots are on the net so it either goes in or someone can put the rebound in.

I know we aren't going to win all the games , but we need to win the ones we have a good chance at. Come out and play 3 hard periods win or lose.

" GO BUCKS GO. "

Postgame Quotes
Mark Osiecki, Ohio State head coach
Overall thoughts on the game
"We had four keys coming into this game: one of the keys was our gauges and how well we gauged ourselves after faceoff responses and after power plays and goals against. We did not respond well to positive or negative situations in the next shifts after those situations."

On what the team needs to do to get better
"I think some of our players had a nervous first game. We had four power plays in a five minute stretch. It's tough to play a game if you sit in the box that often. We have to learn from that. We did limit shots on net and did a good job of blocking shots, but it's going to kill a team if that's what we do all game long. We're going to keep on building. We have to take care of the puck. It's a precious thing."

I don't care if Markell, Red Scotty Bowman or Oz is the coach of this team, it had the looks of an off year from the minute Dalpe, Bishop and Bartkowski left. Give the guy a shot. Yet to see the Bucks this year, went to the Jackets home opener last night...mistake. I think Robert Morris could beat them. Blue Jackets lead the league in roster players would should not be in the NHL and maybe a GM who have no business in that league.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

If we would have got off to a better start, took care of the puck, played harder at times. We would have won the game. Their were some postives and the stuff we did wrong can be corrected (playing harder and making smarter plays). THE OHIO STATE quit complaining about the coaching, If you knew what you were doing you would be coaching, we will be fine, but I do think Curtis Gedig should have been in the line up, he looked good last weekend but who knows what happended at practice or class

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

I was obviously disappointed with the loss, but I was hardly surprised by last night's game.

Some of the players have had three years to learn bad habits, and have had barely two weeks to try an un-learn them. The bad habits I saw included poor ice vision, not seeing an opposing player before making an ill advised pass, and making that pass in a very unforceful manner. I saw players merely going through the motions on shifts (saving their energy for a later shift?). I saw a lot of bad decisions and certainly not all of them came from the more senior members on the team.

I didn't expect a finished product with Frozen Four potential, and I certainly didn't see it either.:)

Not trying to rush things but I remain excited about seeing this team during the last six weeks of the season. And I 'll still be there watching the progress before those six weeks.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

No defence, hard to score when you lose most of your power from the year before (Dalpe, Bishop and Barts). OZ should realize that most of his "upperclassmen" got them to the NCAA Championship tourney a few years back, he should stop bad mouthing them to the press. He doesn't give enough credit to C Reed or Sims and should rethink his release of Stefisen, Folkes and Belanger. At least Stefisen could score and Belanger and Folkes could play Defence. You can't walk into a program and start from scratch, he will have that opportunity when he graduates 10 Sr's and then 6 Jr's the year after. You must respect the current team and then "TEACH" them your game plan which will not happen over night.

And you should realize that having spent years under Markell, they fully represent the First Law of Markellian Dynamics. Their brilliance and talent will be displayed their freshman and (maybe) sophomore years after which it will stagnate or decline (see Messrs Steckell and Umberger). Markell was the worst coach at improving and developing the talent brought into a major college sports program this side of Charlie Weis. It's not these kids' fault, but they are the victims of years of bad player development, and it's unlikely that Oz could reverse that in the span of a few practices.

In short, I fully expect these guys to be worse players than they were a few years back.

I couldn't say it any better than Draighlicht did. Wins are good but don't expect a lot of them this season. Improvement will come but slowly. Oz believes he can't get his upperclassmen to unlearn the crap and retrain them for any real success before they're gone.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

I agree fully regarding Markell he was not any kind of coach however, OZ said it in his second interveiw, "Its hard to judge a player based on 3 practices and an inter squad game", so why release two tough D and a goal scoring forward (NHL Draft pick at at that), none of whom were really allowed to play under Markell. Oz said it friday, my Blueline is in shambles yet before he had a chance to evaluate any of these players he released them (both D were defensive D). Every player in the dressing room probably thinks it may be them next. Looks to me like it was all about saving money and showing the AD he can make cuts to save the program $$. If I was C Reed or Sims I would be ****ed at not being one of 20% of the team selected as Captains!!!!. Why were your two best D sitting on the bench during a penalty kill and your two worst Defensive D on the ice ?? Again OZ blames the "upperclassmen" for the late goal yet there was only two of them on the ice at the time ????? No mention of the stupid penalty by his new "C" either.... OZ needs to stop blaming the "Upperclassmen" and start showing some respect to the players that have worked their collective butts off to get to this level... Any good coach no matter what program he comes into must respect the players and work to get the best out of them,,,,NOT BLAME THEM ALL THE TIME.. It is obvious his inexperience as an NCAA coach shows on how he speaks about his team.... When he talks about changing the "CULTURE" he should lead by example..

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

I still have more faith in Oz than Markell for at least 3 seasons before I would worry.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Unfortunately, Markell's cycle of three years into the hole then one miracle run to save his job allowed his tenure to last far too long. A few cycles of 1 step forward and 3 steps back has led the program deep into the pit, and no coach is going to come in and perform some Tressel type turnaround. It's part of the reason, I'm so hyped about the BTHC. A fresh start for our program on so many levels. In the meantime, we'll all have to be patient and look for slow but measurable improvement. My goals are as follows:

Year 1: Put competitive, well played hockey out onto the ice for the last 10 CCHA games.

Year 2: Win 1 round in the CCHA playoffs--or at least lose a hard fought, well played first round series to a better team.

Year 3: If we're still in the CCHA, be a top four team in the regular season and make it to The Joe.

Along the way, I want to see our recruiting back to where it was early in the decade and those players show actual development and progression in Oz' system.

OSU allowed John Cooper's tenure to last too long as well but I think most will agree Tressel has performed far better than Cooper and I hope that scenerio repeats as well with Oz. Recruiting will be key but has anyone heard who may be signing NLI's to play for OSU? Fall signing period this year is November 8-11 and next spring April 11-14. I'm dying of curiosity how many he may sign in November and who will be left out there to go after if he doesn't fill all his slots during the early signing period.

The scholarships of the players released from the team were not revoked, they were honored for this season. Stefishen chose to leave for the WHL but the other two are in school and on whatever scholarship money they were entitled to. It wasn't to save money.

Oz also made a statement that some players came back to school overweight and out of shape or not in the condition required to play hockey immediately. If I were looking at why some players were released, I would certainly look at this statement.

We will never know why those three were released, we can only guess. But we can eliminate the reason that they were released was to save money.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Having had kids who were division 1 athletes in college I can accurately tell you scholarships are basically a legal contract between a school and student athlete issued on a year by year basis. For a school to have legal standing to revoke them some type of major rules violation would have had to been committed. Lack of performance or showing up not in peak condition would not cut it with the NCAA as valid reasons to revoke, so the school has no choice in honoring the scholarship for the school year if the kid is on the team or not.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Every kid that commits to an NCAA school realizes that the scholarship is renewable every year providing they do not commit a criminal offence or fail to maintain academic expectations, however every kid that commits is told that its a four year deal. It's up to the player to get himself into the lineup but if they do not meet expectations on the ice they usually are considered a healthy scratch. They are still part of the team. This is why many players take the NCAA route because they know that for 4 years they are not traded or "released". These three Canadian youngmen were dropped from the team with the explanation that it was due to "NUMBERS" and that skill, academics, team commitment and fitness were not factors. This has been talked about in the Canadian media after interviews with one of the players involved this past week. Its news because this has not happened before unless it was a violation of the NCAA agreement which was not teh case here.
After the players were released, Stefisien immediately returned to the WHL after the Nashville Predators secured him a spot. The other two players are still attending OSU and taking advantage of their scholarship money. OSU can use Stefisens money but they can't use the others unless they leave??????.
OSU coaches may find recruiting in Canada a little more difficult as word spreads that OSU fails to honour the four year package to their Student Athletes.
If I were on this team I would certainly be wondering if I may be the next one to be released. A four year commitment is nothing more than a yearly tryout.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Oz is simply doing what he learned from Mike Eaves in regards to honoring scholarships. It's should not be a surprise he's going to clean house.

Oz will need 2-3 years to get his type of players on the team and get them trained on how he wants them play to before you see a ton of success. I would say this year is pretty much a throw away year for THE Ohio ST. There probably isn't any way to get around it. When Mike Eaves took over UW, we all knew it was going to be a long year, and it was.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

OSU coaches may find recruiting in Canada a little more difficult as word spreads that OSU fails to honour the four year package to their Student Athletes.

Actually every student athlete in every sport is aware per NCAA that a 4 year package is not allowed to be promised or implied by any coach per the NCAA Guide for the Student Athlete. The rules are specific that all scholarships are for a 1 year period only and are renewable each year. A coach can tell a prospect that if he meets expectations they would have no problem renewing their yearly scholarship award but that is a verbal and conditional and is not legally binding. It is entirely a coach's discretion to renew a scholarship and do not have to justify not renewing one. It's up to the athlete to prove their worth to be part of a team each year. Usually you don't see players who didn't break the rules dismissed but I would add that is by the coach who recruited them. A new coach may have entirely different standards to be met. Example, look what Rich Rodriguez did to Michigan's quarterback, Ryan Mallett after he became the new football coach. Lastly I also know from experience that the mythical full ride doesn't really exist except in the rarest of cases for players of exceptional talent. The number of scholarships available are far short of a full roster and a few players may get a healthy amount given them and the remaining scholarships are broken up and the money distributed in lesser amounts to the rest of the team.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

When NCAA representatives "sell" their package to recruits, they boast that it is a superior option to, or better than Major Junior Hockey in Canada.
They make this statement partly because they know that Major Junior does allow trades and does not fully commit to players. It's one of the reasons that players choose NCAA over Major Junior Hockey. They want to show and prove that they treat players better in NCAA than they do in Major Junior hockey circles.
NCAA coaches and their schools, until Osiecki and Ohio State University, have always honored their word.
By cutting these three Canadian players from the team due to "numbers" it has damaged the reputation of the Ohio State University and the NCAA program.
When NCAA coaches recruit a player, they clearly make firm a four year commitment subject to two exceptions being if the player commits a criminal offense or becomes academically ineligible.
It doesn't matter if Osiecki recruited these players. Ohio State University recruited these players. Who's next to go because of "numbers?"
You cite Rich Rodriguez and Ryan Mallet.
Ryan Mallett chose to leave Michigan and red shirt at the University of Arkansas. Several other players from Michigan left as well after Rodriguez took over. It's a matter of public record. Mallett also got into some trouble with the law while in Arkansas, but remained on the team.
Rodriguez has been accused by the NCAA of major rule violations earlier this year. He is hardly the example I would choose to use.
As for the "full ride scholarship" theory that you are discounting as to the reason the Canadian boys were released from the team.
Perhaps not a full ride for the four years...but ask yourself "how is it divided?" "what is the scholarship offer?" A percentage of EACH OF THEIR YEARS is paid by scholarship.
Examples: a 3 for 4.....three years paid by scholarship...a 4th year paid by student. 75 percent of tuition paid over 4 year period or a 50 percent scholarship...50 percent of tuition paid over a 4 year period. Two CANADIAN Junior players....either 100% (or 90%, 80%) of their SENIOR year of tuition paid.
Not now
Frees up a nice chunk of scholarship money for 2011 recruiting.
This chat line talks about Osiecki cleaning house. Why are Brent and Bittner still on staff then? No one else qualified to take videos?????
