Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Sweep! No quit and it paid it off in the 3rd period. Felt much more even tonight last Heeter stole us one IMO. Now make this statement weekend mean something. I don't believe we have beaten Knapp.

What happened on Miamis second goal??

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

I have not seem the buckeyes play like they played this weekend in YEARS. They played, disciplined, aggressive, smart, hard, inspired hockey. They did not play scared of Miami, they played with confidence. We won puck battles, took better angles to the puck and made crisper, smarter passes. The result was 2 fairly even games with Miami that resulted in 2 Buckeyes W's. The coaches can downplay it all they want but this could be a signature moment for this program.

One of the biggest things I see with this weekend is the student section. This is a HUGE opportunity for the program to build a student following. There were a lot of students in attendance this weekend to see 2 very fun games. The next 2 series are against Notre Dame and Michigan State so those are schools with good 'names' that typically draw some students. Play well in those 4 games and you may have the start of a student following.

Great weekend pucks!

Apparently it went past the crease and through the side of the net. From my angle, it looked like a wide shot, but from a referee's actions, it seems like there was a hole in the netting afterward.

Awesome game. To be behind 0-2 at the start of the third and not say "well, we tried. Let's just finish this up" is awesome. I'm really loving the enthusiasm and don't-quit attitude of this team. I'm seeing a bright future with Coach Oz.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

A two game sweep of Miami, two very good crowds in the Schott and free french fries from McDonald's thanks to the four goals in the third period on Saturday. Life is good at the top.:D

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

OK. Now we know we can beat the Redhawks this year , the big question is can we beat them in the playoffs when it counts? The Bucks need to use this second half of the season to prepare for the playoffs. It will be fun this year to see if this new team of Buckeyes can get past the first round of playoffs and how far they really can go. I see light at the end of the tunnel this year. GO BUCKS GO. Eh.

Nice shot of Miami's "through the net goal" from Saturday's game.

Amazing photo. Congrats to Photographer Davidson, and thanks to Draightlicht for posting.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Saturday's Dispatch had a lengthy article on the front page of the sports section about the team (how about that?) but the reporter Michael Arace obviously did not grow up a hockey fan or very knowledgeable about hockey as he commented on our single goal Friday as a "garbage" goal. It was a clean shot off a rebound so what makes it garbage? It was a decent story until he threw that slur in there. The only experience he has covering hockey it seems is the Jackets which is where the real garbage is or maybe he's a Miami alum?

where I come from, the term "garbage goal" is far from a slur. Anytime you have someone standing in front of the net, picking up the rebounds the goalies leaves in front if him and putting them in the back of the net, that person is often one of your tougher forwards, taking a ton of punishment. Think Tomas Holmstrom of Detroit, for one example. Most Wings fans love the guy, and pay homage to his garbage goals and the role they played in Stanley Cup championships. I bet he meant that reference in a completely positive light.

I changed what I posted here as my reply earlier after I saw the replay of the goal and was mistaken as Dries was posted up close but the quality of the replay kept me from following the puck to be able to see if he scored from the rebound or a pass. Getting used to these embarrassing moments as old age approaches.

Being a Wings fan myself for over 50 years I can relate to your logic but the kid for OSU wasn't posted up for cherry picking but came skating up in position perfectly 15-20 feet out for the rebound shot.

Yeah, you have a point then, maybe he doesn't know his hockey metaphors well enough, because that certainly isn't what I'd consider a garbage goal.

Regardless, time to be looking forward and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to Notre Dame coming to town. Of course we're not going to catch you in points and it's nice to see your team doing so strong after a disappointing season last year. However it's fun to play spoiler and try to position ourselves for a strong finish for the best seed possible come playoffs. Hope the Irish are still in 1st place when we play you and good luck to you.

I'm not going to make any predictions about where anyone is going to finish. :D You guys are playing your best hockey right now. Started off 2-4, then went .500 for 9 games, now 6 wins in a row. And you've swept two teams we could only split with (MU and BGSU). There may not be enough games left for OSU to climb to 1st, but a sweep of us and you only need to pick up two games somewhere else to catch us if we falter down the stretch. And last year, we faltered (that's putting it mildly ) down the stretch, wrapped up, I might add, by a couple of first class rear-end whippings delivered by you guys in the old barn. Should be a good series with a lot still on the line for both teams. First we deal with the 'Nooks and you guys have a WMU team that is coincidentally playing their best hockey in years.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

One thing last night that got me laughing my a** off was the kid in the front row of the student section holding a Boston hockey jersey against the glass when Miami would come into that end putting the jinx on them!

On a more serious note did anyone else notice that unless I'm mistaken the Schott has nothing scheduled March 11-13th? If we were to host a playoff round that weekend it's almost inconceivable that we could have a playoff game on our true home ice after all these years!

You are correct the Girls State tournament is the next weekend so if they can get up to 5th then a series in the schott is going to take place. Lets get some points this weekend at Western and get a little distance between them and us.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

GARBAGE GOALS? I don't think there's such thing. A goal is a goal. Just like in golf , a hole-in-one is a hole-in-one. It don't matter how the puck or golf ball gets in there. LOL.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Some nice news, Looks like Barkowski will play for the Bruins tonight in Pittsburgh in his first offical NHL game.

Dalphe picked up his third goal in 4 games with the Hurricanes.

Saturday's Dispatch had a lengthy article on the front page of the sports section about the team (how about that?) but the reporter Michael Arace obviously did not grow up a hockey fan or very knowledgeable about hockey. ... Good old Michael Arace. Last spring he was crying alligator tears over the loss of John Markell--the arena, it seems, was the problem with the program, not the coach. He argued OSU made a big mistake canning Johnny Highlights.

Re-reading his latest article, the Schott remains part of the problem; still.

In addition, though, Ohio State is supposed to follow the model created by Miami. Which, I guess, means hiring a good coach and winning a lot of games year-in and year-out. That's insightful. Somehow that model is not seen at Michigan, or Boston College, or North Dakota...... Interesting, too, he couldn't come back on Saturday (nor could any other Dispatch reporter) to cover the second game.

I think (emphasis on "think") he came to the Dispatch after a stint out east (the Hartford Courant maybe?). I wonder if he was miffed when the nearby Elis of Yale canned long-term coach Tim Taylor for Keith Allain. I was a Bulldog season-ticket holder during the early/mid nineties, and that used to be one sorry hockey program. But today? Holy moly.

Tell you what, Mike: send a real hockey reporter to Buckeye hockey games next time.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

That's the problem with sports coverage on hockey here. Despite what some think Columbus doesn't fit the mold of a hockey town. We've had the Jackets for some years now and previous several minor teams such as the Chill, Checkers, and Owls and of course our Buckeyes as an NCAA team since '63 but the attitude and enthusiasm for the sport doesn't match those in a city that's home to one of the original 6 NHL teams. It's gotten better over the years, but when our arenas are filled with fans supporting our teams win or lose then you have the mindset to be a hockey town. We were stuck with Markell for years and so it seems it will be with reporter Michael Arace.

After a painful few days after the Saturday game I witnessed, and living at work for the past week, I must say good on ya bucks. We knew this squad would be well improved but it took seeing it in person to realize how much. They didn't quit on Saturday, sadly I can't say the same for my boys. Still disappointed this has now become a 2 game series, and I guess we can still tout being 13-4-2 in the last 19 ;). But great sweep. I hope we can right the ship this weekend against Berg. Handled them well early this year but then let them hang around. Maybe we can get a rematch in March at the Goggin. Nice job Ohio state.

Thanks Mcfarljd, I know it was painful for you guys by the lack of debate about it on your thread. I still think you guys have the more balanced and cohesive team but what we had going for us is a team coming together under the new coach's style and he pushes them hard. I also think as this was his first time playing against Miami he made some adjustments after Friday's game that worked better for us Saturday. We hope our trend continues so we can take up your offer to meet again this season but not at Goggin, but rather at the Joe. Best of luck to you the rest of the season.
