Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Johnson
well said. I remember how much I looked forward to Ben Johnson's 200 and how disappointed I was when he was dirty. Same with lewis. Same with lance armstrong too for that matter. It's just my opinion of course, but Bolt makes them all Poseurs.I was able to see one of his workouts a couple of years ago and it was as jaw dropping as his times.

All this time I thought it was for the libido.;)
Johnson's coach Charlie Francis testified before the Dubin Inquiry that all of the top sprinters of the era were juiced. Johnson was the only one sloppy enough to get caught.

Lewis was busted for doping?
yes.

I also thought Armstrong was only accused, never any proof...

US anti doping agency head says that after floyd landis and other testified against armstrong, they went back and re tested his blood samples and found evidence. the actual chemicals in his blood have not been release to my knowledge as they argue over who has jurisdiction.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

"Carl himself had failed a dope test, but he was cleared by the IAAF." why?

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Blood doping.

I would suspect his Hemoglobin was 18-20 at race time and his hematocrit 56-60. I do not think that was ever tested back then. It is now, to rule out blood doping and drugs that increase the red blood cell count like erythropoietin. But the science and techniques used to cheat can be far more sophisticated. There is just so much than can be tried-and some things are hard to detect unless you know to specifically look for them. Just think about "milk-shaking" in horse racing, which is not all that difficult to do, and how that can influence results.

The 4x100 race and WR destruction is still amazing.

It was awesome to get to see it, and see Jeter pointing at the clock as she passed the finish line, knowing she was shattering a 27 year old world record :)

Bolt is a freak of nature that comes along every so often. It occurs in lots of sports and lots of events. If it was just him I do not think anyone would be suspicious. But when multiple members of one team suddenly become incredibly better, faster, stronger than the rest of the world-many begin to wonder. it happened with East German women in swimming and track, it has been alluded to with Chinese athletes (mostly women in track and swimming), and it has been brought up in regard to the Jamaican sprinters. Questions have arisen in many sports-baseball, football, horse racing, etc.
As a medical professional do I think Usain Bolt is clean? Yes, he is probably just that good. Do I think that the entire Jamaican program is clean? I reserve judgement.

Hmm...if my memory serves correctly, the Caribbean Islanders have always been competitive in the sprints, going back decades.

I'm just speculating here, sometimes we have a genetic outlier, someone for whom not only is thier physique uniquely suited to their sport, they somehow found that sport in which to compete in the first place.

Sometimes, we have overt chemical manipulation: injections, dietary supplements, etc.

Suppose, hypothetically, there is a third: differential dietary intake. Maybe there is something in the indigenous diet of Caribbean Islanders that is a "natural juicer" so to speak? Akin to Native Americans from Mexico and South America who grew up chewing raw coca leaves from early childhood and running long distances at altitude being great distance runners in 1968 Olympics, but not so esoteric.

Maybe there is some plant that is common to the Islands that has a salutory side effect, and sprinting is prized as an athletic feat? I have no clue, it would be interesting to find out though....

What's the one thing that Phelps and the Jamaicans have in common? Pot. Massive amounts of pot.

Candidly, given his medical history (the fact that he's lucky to be alive) I've just never been concerned about these allegations. The fact that the French are behind most of these accusations, because he dominated their precious little race, also doesn't move me much.

I always wanted Lance to ride down the Champs Elysee in a coal kettle helmet. :D

Back when I ran XC in high school, the stoner was one of the better runners in our "tier."
