Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Bolt, yes. The other 2, no way. I don't even know who one of them is. Missy Franklin should be on the list.

Well, I also agree with Bolt as a top athlete of these game. Abby Wambach played well, but I didn't even think she was the best player on Team USA. Walsh and May are deserving of recognition, and I agree with Franklin. I'd also add Phelps (he did manage to win 4 golds and 2 silvers to Franklin's 4 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze). I think the Women's Rowing 8s have a claim here as well. They've only gone unbeaten in like the last 6 years. Although, I may be a bit biased there because my wife is friends with one of the Rowers.

As for other countries, Sun Yang did very well in the pool for China, along with Ye Shiwen. Ruta Meilutyte (Lithuania) was also very impressive in the 100m breaststroke, but didn't do any other events. Andy Murray was a big story, finally breaking through in a big tournament against Roger Federer. There were a lot of others, but those seem to be the main ones that I remember.

If I had to pick a top 3, I would go with (in no particular order):
1. Michael Phelps
2. Usain Bolt
3. Ye Shiwen

Is that the China girl that is doping, and they just can't prove it?

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

No. Ye Shiwen is the 16 year old who managed double gold in the 200m and 400m IM. It was very impressive.
Oh, ok. Now I have to go figure out the name of the China girl that is doping. She shouldn't be anywhere near the list.

edit: She is the one that is doping! The Barry Bonds of swimming.

I won't put any chinaman on my list. **** China.

"What the {bleep} are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please."

I appreciate the skill of team synchro swimming. But there is never any penalties or anything, so the medals are basically pre-determined. Russia, China, Spain.

Doesn't make for any drama.

Naturally, I'll nominate Christine Sinclair over Amy Wambach.

Sinclair is the new Chuck Norris trending on Twitter! :D

Nice little story I'd never heard before:

Being the best in the world at [the decathlon] automatically makes you the best athlete in the world.....

And who decreed this to be so? Why, none other than King Gustav V of Sweden, who upon presenting Jim Thorpe with the decathlon gold medal in Stockholm a century ago, declared, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." (Thorpe was much beloved for his plainspoken reply: "Thanks, King.")

I had had more than plenty of Bolt's "Me me me me me" attitude. Then he insulted Carl Lewis, because years ago Lewis had questioned whether Bolt might be juicing when Bolt's times plummeted during an era of track athletes juicing. You're just a sprinter, Bolt. Carl was not only the best sprinter for years, he jumped, too. And, yes, plenty of us remember him fondly.

When I heard about Bolt ragging on Lewis, I assumed that Lewis had been saying stuff recently about Bolt. Do we know if Lewis has said stuff recently or if Bolt just holds grudges for a long time?

Blasphemy. Abby Wambach named the band "Shanana". They did NOT want to be called that. Also, all "Yes" album covers are actually pictures of Wambach family reunions.

If I understand correctly, Jamaica does not do out-of-competition drug testing.

That is an un-level playing field, and questions should be asked.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

A very interesting article about how the facilities were designed to promote record-setting performances. The pool, for example, is quite technologically advanced:

Ian Crockford, project manager for the Olympic Delivery Authority, the public body responsible for developing and building the new venues, said creating the fastest pool possible was his aim from the beginning. The key, he said, was a depth of three meters, an overlapping duct system at the pool's edges that all but eliminates waves, and two circulation systems, one at the bottom of the pool and one near the surface.

At race time, operators turned off the upper circulation system to still the water. Even though only eight swimmers raced at one time, there were 10 lanes, meaning no swimmer was too close to the wall. And the walls aren't actually walls in the sense that most people who swim laps in ordinary pools are used to. The visible side of the Olympic pool is really just a barrier, and its top edge is 2 inches below the surface of the water. The water then falls into a trough and a recycle duct that recirculates it. The design prevents the wall from sending any ripples back into the center of the pool, allowing swimmers – at least the ones in front – to swim an entire race through practically flat water.

The velodrome (bicycle races) was designed with similar attention to technical details, as was the track.
