Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

It was called the "Olympics Triplecast," and it was a spectacular failure (the Philadelphia Inquirer called it "the biggest marketing disaster since New Coke").

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Triplecast

It was of course nowhere near "everything," because there were only 36 hours of original programming a day while there were about 150 hours per day of sports during the Olympics--now up to 200 or so. We finally do have everything available now, if you have access to the NBC Olympics online broadcasts.

Just to be a contrarian, I don't really object at all to NBC's daytime television coverage. They don't go too heavy on the human interest stories or the prime time sap, and if they do there are always at least 2 other networks to turn to. The prime time highlight package is as unfortunate as always, but it's not like they have any events they can broadcast live during prime time. My one real objection is that they don't show the major events live during the day and then again during prime time as part of their highlight package; as a result, the best events (and the sappiest) are only covered as highlights.

I have seen water polo, women's soccer, handball, taekwondo, wrestling, boxing, some track and field, horse prancing ("dressage"), basketball and volleyball today. Other than wanting to see more track and field and less horse prancing, I can't really complain too much about the NBC Networks daytime coverage. I knew I would find tonight unwatchable, so I just watched the 200 final and the decathlon online. The daytime TV coverage is quite far from abysmal, and with the supplemental online coverage, I'm watching everything I want to watch and several things I didn't even know I wanted to watch.
The problem truly is the prime time coverage. We have 2 americans fighting for the top 2 spots in the decathlon, which many consider to be the ultimate mark of a truly exceptional athlete and instead of covering even half the event, they cut it down to about 5 minutes of showing us how the 2 americans did, with brief mentions of how the one was increasing his lead on the other, etc. It was really quite pathetic how they chose to cover it so they could cut the broadcast at 2 hours and show us that new Matthew Perry show...

Slingbox.

How does that get around the restriction? I've been looking at going with a set-top box, but don't think I've got enough bandwith out here in the boonies. :(

The sling broadcasts the signal from where it is. You could be in Paris and watch my TV.

And yes, it does depend on bandwidth. I have the slingbox direct connected to the router, so how good you view it depends on your connection.

re- NBC's prime time coverage

As much as I watch it, I really am not paying all that much attention this year. The worst is the half hour of fluff at 8pm sharp, when there's SO much to watch. Next up would be the endless prelims of stuff- the first round of diving is shown, but no first round of track. One takes a few min to show 3 heats, the other takes an hour. Why waste the time on one, but not the other? Diving is popular, sure, but track is moreso- based on attendance. The next worst is that so much important stuff is shown beween 10pm and midnight- if not for the live streaming coverage, I would miss a lot of important stuff.

Which brings me to a hmmmm. Rio is just one hour ahead of EST right now- and since they will be held in September, the zones stay the same as right now. Which puts the end of virtually every nights event right in the heart of prime time. Everything. So will we have 3 channels of prime time live AND still have streaming so that we can see live stuff in 2016? Just having NBC isn't going to be enough to cover all of the items, since most of the show will be late. It will be very interesting to see how it's covered.

East Coast may be ok, the left coast will be delayed to prime time.

But what happens on Sunday nights when we have FOOTBALL???!?!?!?

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

The 2016 Summer Olympics will not take place in September. The opening ceremony is August 5, the closing ceremony is August 21.

They show it three hours later, out of order, and a lot of time they won't actually show you the score but they'll show you the player's reaction to the score.

I stand corrected. It's what I get for using wiki, as opposed to rio2016.com. Not smart on my part.

Still, how they broadcast the events when most of it will actually happen in real prime time will be very interesting.

Wikipedia's article is correct (and has not had a substantive edit today). Maybe you accidentally read the dates for the Paralympics instead of the Olympics proper? Those are also given in the introduction and are in September.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

probably what I saw was the para- thinking that having a summer Olympic in the middle of winter didn't make sense, so I wasn't looking for an Aug time frame. I originally figured it would be even later in the year than that, at least in the Brazilian spring. But they will have the summer Olympics in the middle of the Brazian winter, then. Cool. Or not quite as hot.

None the less, they will be one hour ahead of us, most stuff will be happening in the middle of prime time. So coverage will be interesting. (which is my real point- I can fall on the sword again, if you like)

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

I do like MSNBC, NBCSN and the other parts of the umbrellas daytime coverage. They did a good job on that. I am disappointed with the primetime, but that's why I watch CTV in that instance.

So the box would have to be in Canada for me to view CTV on my computer here in PA. Of course, I could install a Bell satellite dish. :)

Yes - and if you can do the latter, let me know how.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

There has been tons of live coverage throughout the day and if not shown nearly in entirety. Heck tennis, soccer, boxing and bb had channels dedicated to only that (although the boxing did have others mixed in). There has been lots and lots of water polo, field hockey, wrestling, taekwondo, fencing, equestrian, rowing, kayaking, table tennis, badminton. The primetime bits suck but the daytime stuff was very extensive and covered a lot of events.

In fact posted elsewhere on the 5th at 10 a.m.:

Olympics coverage right now as I type:

NBC (men's tennis final), MSNBC (water polo, teble tennnis, wrestling), CNBC (women's boxing), and there are the BB and soccer channels.

Later on NBC there is more bb, water polo and equestrian, on MSNBC beach volleyball and field hockey, on NBC again US vs. Turkey in volleyball, women's weightlifing, more volleyball and badminton, later still oin MSNBC more water polo, wrestling and handball, on CNBC men's boxing, back on NBC beach volleyvall and women's track cycling, and there's the prime time bit on NBC from 6-11 with more track and gymnastics.

All of the above doesn't even include what's already been show today - events such as cycling, badminton, water polo, table tennis, wrestling, beach volleyball, synchronized swimming and men's pistol shooting final and those above descriptions don't cover all the sports that are actually shown.

The story about David Rudisha is so much what the Olympics are.about and makes whining about coverage seem so trivial

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

I half-heard some off-hand comment about "athlete of the Olympics." Not sure if that actually is something official or not.

If it is, my nominees (so far) would be
> Usain Bolt
> Abby Wambaugh
> Misty May-Treanor

though I am probably missing something really obvious, like that male Japanese gymnast or something.

Bolt, yes. The other 2, no way. I don't even know who one of them is. Missy Franklin should be on the list.
