Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

If we're calling out ****ty "sports", I want to toss in a vote for ping pong. Or at least say that if we're saying ping pong belongs, then add darts and billiards as well.

If you watched the archery competition, the bows are now so technologically advanced, it is just like darts with better equipment.

and wasn't bowling considered for an Olympic sport at one time?

EDIT: bowling was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, 20 nations competed, according to Wikipedia.

It's in the 2020 mix with roller derby.

I don't believe so:
2016 - Karate, squash, golf, wake boarding, roller sports, and rugby union all applied to be included. Rugby Sevens and Golf were chosen, there is still a chance that beach soccer will be added, which makes sense since its in Brazil. Also, the International Sailing Federation announced that windsurfing would be removed from the 2016 Olympic sailing programme and replaced by kitesurfing

2020 - The IOC will vote on whether to include one of the following sports in the program for 2020: baseball, karate, roller sports, softball, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding, wushu and beach soccer.

First off, golf should have been in this Olympics, being that it is in the UK. Second, what the hell is beach soccer? Also, what the hell is kitesurfing? And lastly, what the hell is wushu?

Beach soccer is soccer played in a smaller area and on sand. They're shorter games as well.

Kitesurfing is like windsurfing, except you are carried not by wind on a sail, but wind on a kite that is string-attached using a grip similar to wakeboarding.

Wushu is a martial art.

Probably high scoring, and the women's games probably involve bikini's, so BBDL should be all in for that event. :D

Thanks for the explanations.
I don't see the need to add another kind of soccer, when the regular soccer is in there. I really don't see the need for beach volleyball either, but I don't complain because they have such exquisite uniform selection, well, most of them anyway. (So I probably wouldn't complain about beach soccer much either, since it sounds 100x better than regular soccer)

Kite surfing sounds incredibly stupid. And Wushu sounds ok, but I'd say no to it. We don't need any more events that only ****ing China cares about.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

i wouldn't mind if they limited the total number of events and then rotated them....there is so much duplication in so many....look at rowing for example. I guess though for the athletes who train for them, they wouldn't like that idea much.

Still, there is wrestling / graeco-roman wrestling / boxing / judo / taekwondo....we could just have mixed-martial arts instead.....(just kidding).

With as big of joke that boxing has become, I'm sure Dana would leap at any chance he gets to take MMA to the Olympics.... Although, is there even a sanctioning body in MMA? Isn't it just independent companies?

Its just the UFC, and a bunch of smaller companies. All fights are sanctioned by state sports commissions, and the titles are given out by the UFC or equivalent body.

That's the problem, there's no international governing body for MMA. And there's a ton of rules variances: cage vs. ring, do you allow elbow strikes to the head? (banned in Japan, allowed in UFC) kicks on the ground? How long are the rounds? How many rounds?

They really do need a governing body to kind of unify things.

Yep, I agree. It could happen, but at this point UFC is such a huge cash cow, I don't know if they would change much of anything.
