Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

Re: Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

I am not sure but it looks like we will pick up zero medals in men's boxing. Years ago we would be able to get something in several of the weight classes.

I wonder why. Too many young guys going for the money and not the gold? The histories of our gold medal winners generallly prove you can do both.

Re: Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

Conspicuously low in the medal count is Germany. Also interesting is medal count in soccer. North America 3; Asia 2; South America 1; Europe 0
It really isn't that surprising, I mean the zero for Europe was unlikely but the men's tournament is U-23, plus Europe doesn't get 40% of the teams like they do in the world cup (13/32 vs 4/16). A U-23 tournament has many more chances for unexpected results and on the women's side, USA, Japan, Canada are all top 7 in world rankings, Germany not making it probably hurt Europe's chances quite a bit there and obviously France could have won Bronze but decided not to score a goal against Canada.

MMA pays more?

Which raises an interesting question. The MMA guys are tough, without question. And generally in good shape. How would they do against boxers (making some arrangements for hand gear)? The very little I've seen of these guys makes me wonder if they can take one on the button.

Depends on the rules. If it's MMA rules they'd take the boxer down and it'd be over quick. If boxing rules the MMA guys would be in trouble in a hurry.

Not exactly analogous. But you may recall a "match" in Tokyo between Ali and their top wrassler, Antonio Inoki. Not being an imbecile, Inoki spent the entire event on his back, like a crab, staying as far away from Ali's punching power as possible and trying to "work legs." The "match" was noteworthy for the moment Ali, out of frustration, told Inoki to "get up, mother effer," clearly heard on TV.

Missed an important event that I'm sure a lot would be interested in...

Women's open water swim.

Seems to be the swimming version of the marathon- they finished in just under 2 hours. US got a silver.

edit- it's a 10k swim, and the US swimmer is Haley Anderson. Good for her.

Tomorrow is the men's swimming marathon.

MMA isn't as damaging to the body. (Despite what the crooked NYS Athletic Commission tells. Don't get me started on that debate because former Gov. Pataki bought John McCain's line of BS about MMA being the downfall of civilized sport.)

Saw it earlier-Haley kept closing at the end. If this thing was 10.1K she wins the gold. Just out touched by 0.4sec. The men's version I believe is tomorrow.

Remember those competitions way back when-if a USA boxer did not win, it had to be a Cuban or a Russian?

Re: Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

In today's first round of the mens 4x400 meter relay-the USA team had a horrible first leg run in over 46 seconds to fall into 7th place. The next 3 legs were run much faster and we qualify for the final in second place. Only after the race did it become known that the runner for the first leg for the USA heard a pop in his leg during his run-later found to be a fracture. But he finished allowing the USA to qualify. Big time credit due here!!!

Those two would have medalists or at least contenders in just about every weight class. IIRC many of the East German "lady" swimmers would also enter boxing.

The East German lady swimmers and lady track sprinters both looked like poster children for testosterone enhancement. But also back then in the unregulated era-there was Jarmila Kratochvílová. She ran the 400 meters and the 800 meters in times that have held up quite well even by todays standards. She impressed me as the most steroid enhanced looking female I had ever seen. (and in my practice i had done considerable cosmetic work for many female bodybuilders). She looked even less feminine than the current 800 meter threat Castor Semenya.(who does not need any exogenous steroids)

Re: Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

Watching the replay of women's soccer game. Amazing to me that buehler didn't get red carded nevermind a penalty for literally having both arms wrapped around an opponent in the area. This wasn't the all too common shirt pull...this was a mauling.

Reminds me of one of my favorite sports quotes. When asked about the swimmers' deep voices, one of the East German coaches said "We came to Munich to swim, not to sing."

On the other hand, there was Katarina Witt, the figure skater. I never doubted her gender.

I don't even know how she could walk with those, let alone skate and do jumps and stuff.

Which brings us to the Press "sisters," Tamara and Irina. Their long, successful Olympic careers ended about 5 minutes after the IOC announced new, enhanced, gender testing. And who was the world class "female" runner from the 30's or 40's who passed until a post mortem examination revealed, uh, extra parts?

Re: Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

Not exactly analogous.

I know, that's why it depends on how the fight is set up as I couldn't completely figure it out from your post. If you meant 'how would MMA guys do in a stand-up boxing match against real boxers?', they'd get hammered. Maybe a rare exception if it's a MMA guy with a high-level pure boxing background, but there aren't many of those.

Edit: And I misunderstood the context of your above phrase the first time...but my point here stands. :o

Speaking of boxing, 17yo Claressa Shields of Flint, Mich. takes gold in the middleweight class. Great story to how she got here, and I have to say...hell of a talented and technical fighter for a 17yo, male or female.
