Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

I really want to get DIII, but it means I would have to buy a new computer. I've been mooching off employer laptops since 2007. The only other PC I own is from 2003 (though I have upgraded various components over the years).

So paying a few hundred for Diablo III seems a bit hard to justify... for now.
That's what credit is for! :D

Leah is coming! Leah is coming!

Diablo 3, I died more getting through this **** game than any other in my life. Not because it's hard but because the random generator is a total dick. Oh, you're in a small room? Have a rare, a pack of elites, and a horde of normal creatures that will one shot you. More frustrating than enjoyable when you hit those points. Which mostly occur from the start of act 3 to the end. It sapped any enthusiasm to try harder difficulties.

I looked at all the Diablo 3 BS and downloaded Torchlight instead.

I'm only 1/2 way through Act3, but I haven't found normal to be any harder than normal on past Diablo games. If anything it's been kinda easier.

So its E3 and little to no excitement.

Microsoft announced Forza Horizon (10/23). An open road version of the racing series. Also showed Halo 4, Gears of War 3, RE6.
Sony showed off Last of Us and an Assassin's Creed bundle for Vita.
I think Nintendo is this morning.

Is it a year from this fall when the three console makers are releasing new hardware? That'll make next year's E3 much more newsworthy for the gamers.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

The more I read about the Wii U, the more I think Nintendo is a dying company.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

The more I see from E3, the more I think video games are going to suck for the next year...

Well, I guess that makes sense. I always figured the year before major console releases the game publishers have already started to go full steam ahead on developing games for the new consoles.

Except only Nintendo has announced a new console. Sony and Microsoft didn't say anything this week. It could be two years or more for new ones.

I've read rumors that the Xbox 720 is already in production in Texas. At least components of the 720.

They won't die, but they will take a step back and might end up pulling a Sega. The DS can keep them alive in the "console" market IF they keep improving on it to keep with the times, but it'll be tough. Simple gaming as we knew it is rapidly heading for tablets and smartphones. The portable systems can survive if they can keep offering innovations and exclusive properties.

Plus their licensed properties are freaking gold. More kids know who Mario is than Mickey Mouse. They'll remain alive as a company in some form or another for that reason alone.

I wonder to some extent if they would be better off going the Sega route? I would think more gamers would be apt to buy Mario if they didn't have buy a Wii/Wii U.

After the novelty of the Wii wore out, all I could think about Nintendo is, "The only way this company survives is if it switches over to a games-only company. Their role in the hardware side of things is going to be nonexistent."

Nintendo peaked with the N64. Since then, they've been dying a slow death. They bet on innovative interfaces over hardware power. They chose poorly.

Nintendo, hardware wise, has been trying find a different niche than Sony/MS. I wouldn't say they've done poorly (I wouldn't say the Wii has done poorly), and who knows how the Wii U will do in the general market.

Well this explains the Sony Move and the Microsoft Kinect.

The Wii outsold both Xbox and PS3 for a LONG time, if that's doing poorly I think they'll sleep well with that performance. After a certain point, people just can't by anymore nintendo products so of course their products are going to decline in sales.

If they boost up the graphics power to appeal to the "oooh shiny must be good!" crowd and bring in more multiplayer/web features then the Wii U will do just fine.

In terms of sales, I completely agree. But times are changing and Nintendo is in a very fragile financial state. Last year they got killed last year losing over $550 million. The general consensus on Wall Street is that if the Wii U flops, Nintendo will be in serious trouble.

The problem with Nintendo's strategy is that most of their games are not terribly complex. These types of games are shifting more towards iPhone and iPad users who can buy games for $5. Which just so happens to be where Nintendo is going to struggle mightily in the next few years. Nintendo doubled down on the handheld console market and I just can't see the handheld market staying around much longer with Apple steamrolling into that market. There is a huge amount of pressure for new, and relatively complex, games to be published on the iPhone/iPad. These were the games Nintendo had the market cornered on when the Wii was released.

PS4 and Xbox 720 games will not be easily translated to the iPhone/iPad market. They focus on the hardcore gamer rather than the casual gamer that typically buys a Nintendo console. These casual gamers are moving more and more to Apple products.

It'll have to fail spectacularly with it's lineup in order to flop without new competition from either of it's main competitors.

Adding the ability to download and play such games to their next handheld would add a lot of longevity and value to it. This would also drop the price on the far simpler handheld games that are only costly due to the cartridges. As long as they don't go full retard the way Sony did with their handheld.

And compared to tic tac toe those games are complex. I know I definitely look impressed when I see someone get a high score playing angry birds. :p

Agreed on the Vita. Completely agreed on the cartridge aspect. Remember how much a new SNES game cost in 1991? $70+. Seriously. I believe that's something like $150 in today's prices. Switching to discs basically cut those prices in half.

I just think the Wii U will have to be extremely competitive in terms of pricing and I'm not sure how you do that when your main attraction is a tablet controller. How much is that going to cost? $100? Will it be included with the console? What about having two of them? Yikes...

I hope Nintendo turns itself around (mostly because I used to be a Nintendo freak).

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Looking back on it, I'm surprised Nintendo went with motion control only for the Wii. Did they not think Sony and Microsoft would find an add-on for the consoles?

I'd buy a Mario-kart game for the PS3. I'm not going to buy a whole new console for it though, especially when the only Wii games I've liked are Mario-kart and Wii Sports.
