Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

Thread kinda quiet for a Friday afternoon, so thought I would bump up. What kind of season do you think the Cats will have?

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

I'm a New Hampshire resident who happens to be an overall fan of college hockey. 'My' team, such as it were, is BC...but only because my Dad is a double Eagle from there. But being from NH and seeing the success BC has had, it's time to see UNH rise up and do the unexpected: win the whole bloody thing. 'Underachieve' is almost synonymous with UNH hockey, but I sure would like to see them come out of the blue to shock everyone who isn't expecting anything this year. I'm pulling for UNH in all respects this year; BC has had its trophy-vacuuming run and it's time for UNH to roar to the front of Hockey East and the NCAAs!

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

The New Jersey Devils sign Bobby Butler to a one-year, 2-way contract. That means Sislo, Butler, and DeSimone are all together in the NJ Devils organization. Interesting.

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

Any thoughts on line combinations and how Umile is going to weave some of these freshmen in? Our forwards are very left shot heavy # and skill wise. Will Umile make and all lefty first line?

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

As many question marks as there were going in to last season you could make reasonable guesses for the top two lines. This year I have no clue. Going out on a limb for my one prediction -- DeSmith in goal.

I really have no clue either, but how about the following, although I forget who is injured to begin season?

1) Goumas-Sorkin-Downing
2) Henrion-Block-Speelman
3) Silengo-Burke-Thrush
4) Camper-Pavelski-Willows
five frosh to work into lines: Correale, Gaudreault, Hill, MacDonald, Smith

D1) Kostolansky-Agosta
D2) Hardowa-van Riemsdyk
D3) Knodel-Pesce
two more frosh to rotate into D: Randall and Quast

G1) DeSmith
G2) Regan
G3) Wyer

Bring on the SCS Huskies! Drop the Puck!!

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

Is Burke going to miss any time with his injury?

Speelman - Goumas - Sorkin
Downing - Block - Henrion
Thrush - Silengo - Hill/Willows
Correale/MacDonald - Camper/Gaudreault - Willows/Smith

Gotta get those freshmen some time. At least 2 of them need to play 20+ games imo. Pavelski has a great heart and hussle, but in order for Umile to interweave these youngsters in, he may have a Manz type senior year. Also, if Pesce doesn't play in at least 25 games, I think it'll be a shame. Umile has to let him develop and learn.

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

I certainly hope the team understands this is as much a developmental year as anything else. There is still a bit of a talent gap that appears will close (some) in the coming years. The weight of consecutive 20 win seasons and NCAA appearances have both fallen away, both the streaks have thankfully ended.

To me that means the early season is about trying a bunch of guys in different roles. Seeing the freshman in game situations and developing plans for them to improve. What I would really like to see is a team that grows and gets better all year. For me that mean seeing all the freshman with in the first 4 games and significant ice time, not just token 4th line duty for 5 minutes in the entire game. UNH needs to be building a role 4 lines team.

Re: Official UNH Wildcats Offseason Thread 2012

Austin Block is in no way shape or form a top 6 forward. Not that he isn't useful...he skates well, kills penalties, and gets after it on the forecheck, he just doesn't have the offensive game. He's much better suited in a 3rd line checking forward role. I also don't think things are as dire for this team as some are predicting. If Speelman bounces back and Henrion wakes up from his season long siesta then they should be able to score enough goals to win their fair share of games because the first line has the potential to be very good.

All else being equal as far as good health, etc...

Goumas-Sorkin-Downing (Pretty good 1st line. Downing will approach 40+ points this season)
MacDonald-Burke-Speelman
Henrion-Block-Thrush
Correale-Camper-Smith
Gaudreault-Pavelski-Wilows/Hill

Hardowa-van Riemsdyk
Kostolansky-Pesce
Knodel-Agosta
Quast-Randall

DeSmith
Wyer
Regan

without injury i dont think hill sees more than 2 games this year. if burke is injured i would think that one of correale, willows, and macdonald would get a crack at the line up with willows getting the first shot.

If we see Willows playing 2nd line, let alone 2nd line center, the Cats are in bigger trouble than I thought they'd be in. He was less over his head as the year went on, but still a long long ways from being a guy that's going to contribute much, let alone to be asked to play on a scoring line, IMO.

Of course I'm not really clear if you're suggesting that one of those guys should take his spot, or just getting into the lineup with someone else moving up to Burke's spot

I liked Willows play towards the end of last year. Went to the front of the net often and plays with grit. I think he'll have a surprising year on the 3rd line.

Pavelski and Camper are gonna have to split time almost in order to get some freshmen in, and then maybe Silengo might miss a few games (has a nagging back injury ?), Burke will undoubtedly miss some games. Maybe a few other sophomores will sit here and there, who knows. I am a big advocate for getting the freshies some ice. We over-recruited for this year, now we have to deal with it.

“@RomanStrib: Lucia also said Gophers will host IceBreaker Invitational in 2013 -- a four-team October tournament -- with New Hampshire in it.”
