Joey Laleggia committed to UNH in January, 2008 when he was a 15-year-old, 10th grader. Reports on his commitment said he planned to enroll at UNH in the fall of 2010. Laleggia's first season in the BCHL with the Penticton Vees was in 2009-2010. He scored 13 goals and 52 assists.

In the summer of 2010, when he had just turned 18, something happened between Laleggia and UNH. In an interview, Laleggia said "my situation (w/UNH) got a little complicated and it's just good for both parties to move on." No other specifics have ever been made public by the involved parties.

The two most likely explanations are either:

~ Laleggia applied to UNH in the spring of 2010 and did not meet the admissions requirements.

~ Laleggia was asked by the UNH coaching staff to play one more year - that is, the 2010-11 season - in the BCHL and enroll at UNH in the fall of 2011 and he did not want to do it.

As it turns out, Laleggia did play the 2010-11 season in the BCHL and committed to Denver University on October 7, 2010.

One possibility is that the Admissions Dept decided it was too late for anyone - athlete or not - to apply for admission for the Fall of 2011. If so, that decision would seem to be somewhat arbitrary. Remember, on July 18, 2011, just two weeks before the Gaudreau's visited UNH, Casey Thrush was admitted as a last minute replacement for Dan Correale. Correale was set to come to UNH in Sept. 2011 but had to postpone enrollment for one year due to surgery. Thrush was not planning on coming to UNH until Sept. 2012 so I assume he did not submit an application to the Admissions Office until shortly before July 18, 2011.

The straightforward account is John Gaudreau and his brother visited UNH, the coaching staff offered him a scholarship on the spot, Gaudreau wanted to come to UNH, but the UNH Admissions Office would not accept an application from him. The following day, Saturday July 30, the Gaudreau's visited BC, BU, and Northeastern in that order. On Thursday, August 4, John Gaudreau accepted an offer to play at BC.

Why would the Gaudreau's be visiting Northeastern when Johnny had just decommited from NU?

My understanding is that the Gaudreau's wanted to give the newly hired coach - Madigan - an oppportunity to make his pitch. When John had originally committed to NU it was to Coach Cronin.

When K Yandle was not admitted every school in HE but one, BC, admitted him immediately, so this kid had to be at least UNH caliber academically. And even if he's slightly below and that sought after make accommodations for that kind of player. If UNH wants to be a top program it has to be much more flexible, it aint Harvard, if not fans should expect second tier a Hockey East team. The competition for players is getting tougher and tougher and this staff has it's hands tied by numerous times now by admissions. UNH Men's Hockey is the only sport that makes money. Admissions should have a satellite office in the Whitt, getting Umile coffee when not admitting hockey players. As a famous football coach said " if they want me to cook the dinner, they should at least let me buy the groceries.

I was wondering the same thing as it would be somewhat surprising for such an elite player to commit to UNH on the spot, while on a recruiting trip to look at several schools, including BC and BU, (which quite frankly, with no disrespect to UNH, are a bit more prestigious/successful than UNH when it comes to hockey and the school in general) without even making those visits. Again, maybe it is the way it went down, but just seems a bit odd to me, especially when you hear him saying that playing for BC is a dream come true for him.

It makes sense that Coach Umile would first need to approach his boss, Athletic Director Scarano, to inform him of the difficulty John Gaudreau was having with the Admissions Office and to seek his advice and support. I assume it would then be up to Mr. Scarano to contact the Director of Admissions to try to work out a resolution.

Coach Umile is not the only Hockey East coach who is not in a position to directly influence the Admissions Office on behalf of a recruit. Remember that in December 2010,, Coach Jerry York wanted to give a BC scholarship to Vinny Saponari but the BC Admissions Committee would not accept Saponari's transfer application.

One period done in Denver's first round NCAA game. Laleggia's skating and hands are everything we were led to believe the past few years. It is still early to tell but it seems to me he still has a ways to go in terms of strong defense in his own end, not that it should be surprising with his age and size.

Not usually one to worry about being taken seriously but at least a year ago, if not two, I had written that UNH was in trouble because of it's Admissions shmuck....while I've talked with some at UNH about this, it will only take a couple of seasons like this past one for Marty or Huddleston to take some action, since hockey is the only revenue bearing sport at UNH, they cannot afford to have ticket sales and sponsorship fall much more....without UNH hockey having good seasons to keep the money flowing, with the State House being of no help, why even have a State University? Ask for a budget of 81 million and get 49....please! I know, let's raise tuition!

Only 7% of the UNH budget is now funded by the State of NH ....

It was more of a coincidence, than not. It was all but a done deal to go to Denver quite awhile before that.

Help: Am I hallucinating ... or was it on a different thread .... but didn't NCAA Watcher have a rather detailed post yesterday on the situation at UNH. Where did it go?
