Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!

Frozen 4 or Bust! It looks like this team will have very high expectations the next three years, something they were not burdened with last year.
Good to see Neil fully recovered from the knee thing. galatti, adams etc. looked good. Davies was the big story, one game is small sample, but it looks like he will make the top 6 forwards better then last year.
I expected Zawadski to be good, I was impressed with Gilbert being great. Gilbert reminded eveyone that he still can play.
The other new guys, I only really noticed Herlihey, he could push for a spot. It looks like Neil, Zawadski and Herlihey were team mates in the CCHL.
I thought Scott struggled on our D.
The win was nice but we benefited from a poor performance by the USA goalie.
Time will tell if this team is better then last years. If they are, it will be fun to watch.

Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!

Really the only goal you could fault Opilka on was Galati's second. The others were not his fault at all. He got sniped at close range twice by Davies, was victimized by a great pass and quick shot on the Adams goal. Galati's first was a rocket of a one timer to the far corner which is basically an unstoppable shot. He wasn't stellar but couldn't really be faulted for many of the goals.

Totally disagree.
Sniped at close range by Davies- both goals were one on one with the goalie, and the goalie got beat, neither shot was off the post and in.
Adams goal was a quick bang bang play, but the puck went into the middle of the net, under the goalies pad, goalie had a chance to stop that one to.
Galati's shot was tough to stop, but I'm pretty sure it's the Gaolie job to cover the far corner.
Anyways, it would be boring if everybody saw everything the same way, I respect your opnion on the goals but I saw it differently.

from reading the Wisconsin thread Opilka is headed there next yr and a poster there said he is the best goalie coming into college next yr, that said he let up 5 goals on 16 SOG,a few he could have put in a better show.......I still wouldnt mind if he came to Oz next yr:D...oh yea Zman and Gilbert did play very well...good to see.......I would also like to see the new netminder as well.

Have you ever played goalie? When the pass comes across and it is one timed back the opposite way you are sliding to the top corner no one is going to stop that, no one. Well unless you never picked up the pass and it hits you in the side of the head. Again one on one with the goalie a quick shot is the best chance to score. As a goalie you are taking up as much net as you can and there are holes that from that close are very tough to close. Just over the pad and under the arm on the stick side is one of them and that is where Davies went on his goals and he also had his head down until the last second which makes it very hard to read where he is going. Adams goal did not go center of the net, it was tucked a bit inside the post, Opilka did pick it up a bit late but again it was a long pass out of the corner and Adams got it off very quickly. It was more a case of Oswego capitalizing on their chances than it was bad goaltending.

Agreed. Goalie didn't do anything wrong. The skaters in front of him gave Oswego some amazing opportunities. Oswego had the skill/luck to finish on those opportunities.

I've got to say, there was about half a dozen times when I found myself thinking "How great would it be if there was an Oswego guy right at that spot on the ice?" and BOOM! Davies was there. I like this kid.

Maybe after this weekend Opilka will decide to play for the best team in Wisconsin next season.

He would have a better shot at a National title there for sure.

Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!

Poll released today has Oswego at #3. Definitely raised expectation this year compared to last year. Last year the pre-season poll did have Oswego at #4, which was some kind of miracle, but by December we had fallen all the way to #13.

I don't give any credence to the preseason polls, there's no way Oswego should have been #4 last year with the amount of talent they lost. The people who vote in the poll probably had no idea that oz even lost the players they did.

That being said, I have reasonably high expectations this year

Acknowledged, but there's also a bit of a prophetic element to that crazy ranking from last year's pre-season poll. Anyone looking at the team who had any idea the talent they lost would've been crazy to put them in the top 4. But they did. And where did Oswego end the season? In the top 4.

Maybe it was blind luck. Or maybe there's something about Oswego.

Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!

It should be noted that the preseason poll is almost always a near-exact replica of the last poll from the previous season. Since Oswego was in the championship game in 2013, dropping from #2 to #4 was a pretty big leap for those voters. The vast majority of them just submit the exact same thing they submitted a few months earlier.

Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!

Rankings on the "other site" also came out:

Rank Name (1st place votes) Record Points Last-Rank

1 St. Norbert (20) 0-0 300 1

2 UW-Stevens Point 0-0 271 2

3 Oswego State 0-0 262 3

4 Geneseo State 0-0 220 4

5 St. Thomas 0-0 190 6

6 Adrian 0-0 179 5

7 Trinity (Conn.) 0-0 167 11

8 Norwich 0-0 145 8

9 Plattsburgh State 0-0 142 10

10 UW-Eau Claire 0-0 129 9

11 Babson 0-0 124 7

12 Elmira 0-0 43 14

13 Bowdoin 0-0 41 12

14 Utica 0-0 30 13

15 Hobart 0-0 29 NR

Others receiving votes: UW-River Falls 27, St. Scholastica 22, Gustavus Adolphus 21, Amherst 15, Williams 13, Nichols 9, Neumann 7, UMass Boston 7, Salem State 3, St. Olaf 1, Castleton 1, Nazareth 1

Looks like mostly agreement, and not much change between last year's final rankings and this year's pre-season. #5 and #6 switched places, big whoop. #7 and #11 switched places, that's something I guess. #9 and #10 switched places. #14 moved up to #12, pushing down the #12 and #13 spots by one each.

Overall, not much new information here.

Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!

as far as the polls go they mean squat, the only thing as we have found out that matters is the smokieeeeee room, and winning your league if u have a AQ.........that said Buff St. tomorrow night, cant do much worse than last yr in Buff st...As for who will be on the ice I would say their will be 12 forwards 6 dmen and 3 goalie, the names on the sweaters:eek:..thats why they pay coach Gosek/Digby the big bucks, they must have a hell of a time picking the line-up......

Preseason Polls are like SAT scores from junior year - nobody cares....:D

Hey I got a 720 on the writing section of my junior year SATs. Buuuut, Oswego doesn't look at the writing section. But other colleges I applied to did. And they offered me more money in scholarships than Oswego did.
