Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

The criticism is unwarranted only if you see criticism as a negative thing, I do not. They have a "young" team in terms of experience and a 13-4-2 record is nothing to sneeze at but I feel they have gotten away from their game and are now trying to play more like last years team did and they are not good enough for that yet.

I, along with out pal Toto was one of the few people that saw enough in this group in the preseason to predict a good record and some possible playoff noise while everyone else pretty much said we were idiots. Most people seemed to think they would be lucky to win 10 games, so I don't feel like I am being too negative. I just think there are a few guys out there that are much better than they are currently playing and some of those are upperclassmen who have been around. Perhaps I am a bit impatient with my desire to see their potential realized quickly. It's not like anyone is saying the next few years will be wasted years because these guys are no good.

One other thing I feel needs to be said. I think this season has put to rest a bit of the talk about Eddie not being that great of a coach as some of the other teams posters suggest. He no longer has the financial aid carrot to dangle out there and he still has a team with a good record and a ton of potential for the future. When you take a good look at the other sports teams at Oswego, some have had good seasons but none have had sustained success, I think it really illustrates the kind of job he has done here. Even going back to the days when George coached Eddie did a lot of the recruiting and had a huge role in those teams success.

I don't know how much of my predictions were wishful thinking and how much were actually informed. I do have faith in the coaching staff here in Oswego. Even without scholarships, they really pulled together a solid group of guys. I would say this freshman class is as good if not better than any freshman class in D3 this year.

I was trying to give you some credit for an informed opinion, you could have just went with it.

My opinion was based on seeing some of these guys play, on the computer not in person, and Eddie saying he thinks we will be ok this year. Ok in Eddie talk means they will be pretty good so that is what I went with. Lucky for me they haven't made me look the fool.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Anyone who thought this Laker team wouldn't be in the playoffs needs their heads examined. The rink, fans, and media (yes media) will gain you a few good players alone. Most of the "new" Laker fans are use to undefeated SUNYAC seasons, and National Championship runs, so to them its a disappointment. When Plattsburgh lost their Aid they finished 4th, 4th, and 3rd in the SUNYAC. Where is Oswego currently? Because of Emery's coaching, he took those 4th, 4th, and 3rd place SUNYAC teams to the Conference Title game. Back then the American Junior system was not as good as it is today. We had "some" people thinking it was going to be a reload year much like the 2009-2010 season which saw the Lakers go 15-1-0 in conference and 26-3-0 overall losing 3-4 to St.Norbert in Lake Placid. While 2013-2014 has some good players, I don't think they have the depth of the players of years past, which comes back to the whole F/A. Oswego has 3 SUNYAC loses this year, from 2009-10 to 2012-13 they had 4 COMBINED. You have a lot of following from that era who expects that when it is probably unrealistic. Sure they are a good team, but the dominant team of years past they are not.

I would agree to all except media. Our media, yes. USCHO or D3, not so much. Maybe substitute program history instead of media, and there you are.

Remy you are spot on with most of your comment. I don't know if any hockey team can be dominant with so many freshmen. The teams of the last 4-5 years also had some really good seniors to provide stability when the ship started to tip. That is not the case this year with this Laker team. This team seems to have great chemistry which hasn't been there is past years, here you have to give Coach a lot of credit in recruiting great young men to play in Laker Land.

I'm pretty sure I predicted 18 wins for the year before it began

Yes you did, I knew there was a third I just wasn't sure who. I expected to win a lot of close games which they have had some but they have also dominated a few games.

No one expected this team to be like the 09-10 team because as DIIIfan said they some dynamite Seniors on that team. They won a title as Freshman and then watched the older players underachieve for two years so they were hungry. Remember guys like Jesse McConney and Chris Brown, Muise and Ayotte played only sparingly that year. The Sophomores and Juniors were also really good. These Freshman are doing it mostly on their own and while they are not dominant they along with Norwich are doing a lot better than some teams that have a ton more experience.

The fact that Michael Gilchrist was the only member of that class that didn't finish his four years and the injection of transfers into the lineup is more to blame for the current makeup than financial aid. Yes the aid is a factor in the depth of the freshman but not so much in the lack of experience to help them along. Guys really weren't keen on coming to Oswego to sit and wait for that huge class to leave, the freshman that did come in along the way were mostly role players or in the case of Chris Carr has never reached his potential. Then you had Smrke get hurt, Domenico left, Berra left, and Rodrigues and Kim-Swallow have had injuries slow them.

Has anyone heard if and when Oswego will reinstate a FA program again if any?

The college has been moving aid in the form of merit based scholarships, grants and awards for some time now...there is a program called Destination Oswego which is designated for out os state and international students...it is not indicated if athletes are eligible for that program...

All of the programs are listed here - http://www.oswego.edu/admissions/costs/financial/scholarships/merit.html

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

im talking WTOP and WNYO....not the newspaper coverage

Are you referring to the Oswego school newspaper? Or to the online media coverage at d3 and uscho? Because the Oswego school newspaper nearly always puts the Laker men on the cover of the sports section every week they have a game. They get solid interviews with the players and often the coaches as well. The person at the newspaper that gets to cover men's hockey is a coveted position considered harder to get than Editor-in-Chief.

I never gave a specific win total, but I did say before the season started that I didn't have terribly high hopes for a playoff run this year, but this team would definitely be exciting to watch and they would be REALLY good in a year or two. I still believe that. I still don't have high hopes for a strong playoff run and the team IS still exciting to watch.

And while others say the criticism isn't warranted, I disagree. Sure, a 13-4-2 record for a team with 19 freshman is really good. But it seems like there's been a lack of energy over the last few weeks and that is the concern. All year we've been saying that they need to gel as a team...and then watch out. Well they did that and they tied Platty and Utica. Now they're back to playing like a group of guys who have never played together before. They WILL get it. This team WILL be very good next year. And who knows, they could make a run this year and blow all of our minds. But I still consider this a rebuilding year and I look forward to seeing what these guys can do!

I'm talking about the local school newspaper being a positive thing and the TV and WNYO coverage as being up and beyond anything else in DIII. If you show "mom and dad" from British Columbia the fact they can watch their son play hockey in HD with high quality broadcasters and all the behind the scenes things they do, huge selling point. If you've ever grown up in the Junior leagues you know these parents are just as into the games as the kids are. They love being apart of their child's hockey (in a good way) as just about any other sport. WTOP and WNYO, in parts, gives them that. Coupled with one of the best rinks in DIII hockey and one of the largest DIII fan base's in DIII hockey is a huge reason as to why Oswego can continue to put out above average teams. For sure one of the more harder working Laker teams we've seen in some years. For the past few season Oswego has won on talent having probably the most top heavy talented teams since probably the 2001 RIT team. When this years team doesn't outwork its opponent they either are barely leading and or losing. We keep talking about "only having 4 loses", but let's keep in mind....2 games at Ponyland....Morrisville always plays Oswego tough. Another game with Geneseo, and then a trip to the Stafford. Lakers could very well easily lose 2 if not 3 more of those games. 5 or 6 SUNYAC loses would be the most since the 1999-2000 season.

By newspaper coverage I mean the Syracuse paper ect ect. To me Oswego gets overshadowed by Syracuse B-Ball (rightfully so). Anything to do with the hockey team and the school media is top notch.

Not to mention zero coverage in Rochester. 1.5 hour away? How many alums live there?

Rochester has a DI team (RIT) and two SUNYAC teams (Geneseo/Brockport) (plus Nazareth) in closer proximity than Oswego. As much as I'd love to see them acknowledged, it doesn't make much sense to me.

You have to throw a large net to catch a lot of fish michael-son! (Not utica fish however throw them back)
As an alum who lives in the South, the advances in broadcasting Oswego even in the last five years have been without question, awesome. Without it I would be still huddled next to the radio and checking scores here.
Roch tv/news could do more but Oswego is part of the Syracuse market as they say. Shouldnt matter IMO.
