Didn't mention the pro team because Syracuse has one too...

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

So a lot of people are saying how they're disappointed in some of the losses that Oswego has suffered this year, and you're right, the losses are disappointing. But let's put this in context. St. Norbert had 3 disappointing losses this season. Plattsburgh had 3 disappointing losses this season. Utica has had 5, Norwich has had 5, WEC has had 4. Oswego has had 4 losses. Disappointing, all of them, yes. But we're viewing everything through the goggles of "this team lost 14 seniors and is being completely rebuilt" so every disappointment we immediately blame on their age and inexperience. Yes, Oswego changed from last year to this year but there were also a lot of other changes in the league. A lot of teams that were mostly cannon fodder in years past for top 10 teams to beat up on have improved their programs and stand as real challenges for some of the more traditional perennial powerhouses. A lot of mid-level teams like Babson or Geneseo are refusing to step aside for the more lauded teams in their conferences.

In short, the league as a whole has become much more competitive. The difference between the worst and the best team in the league has become smaller. So yes, Oswego has had some disappointing losses. As have pretty much every other top 10 team in D3 right now. Even Adrian has now suffered through 4 ties and a walloping from SNC (11 to 1) that probably still stings a week later.

So in short, don't count Oswego out just yet. Mathematically, they still have a decent shot at an at-large bid if they can beat Genny and Platty in the regular season. And the SUNYAC champion hasn't been crowned yet. People want to just give it to Plattsburgh but I think both Oswego and Geneseo are going to have something to say about it this year. Getting the win at M-ville tonight is a good start, tomorrow night will be a real test of how the boys act when they come into a game expecting to win.

In the end, the key here is "Just keep winning." Keep getting W's. Never consider any game as unnecessary. Every single game is necessary to win, for everyone, every time. If you treat it any differently, you will lose.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Good win for the Lakers tonight, they didn't play down to their opponents level and blew them out. They did settle into some bad hobbits in the third and hopefully that doesn't carry over into tomorrow nights game. A goal on the first shift of the game by the Captain really set the tone. Then two goals in a minute to start the second put them firmly in control.

The power play was good at times but it also had some bad moments like giving up a shorty. Gertsakis seems really reluctant to shoot the puck which I don't get as hot as he was at the end of last year. Johnson and Rivait scored on bombs from the point.

Kenny Neil is ridiculously talented as shown by his goal in the third, he looked like Peter Forsberg dangling around the stangs.

Hulshoff is snake bitten right now. He should have scored Oswego's fourth goal but Galati tipped it as it was going in even though he didn't have to. Then Hulshoff was stoned by Azzano before hitting the post on a beautiful 2 on 1.

Gilby was so so, he didn't have to be great and neither go was his fault so it was a decent outing.

I hate settling into bad hobbits.

But yeah they really have to watch their backs tomorrow. They should be going into the weekend with the attitude that they're going to have to work even harder than today. Less mistakes. More discipline. Play the game the coach taught them. Trust the system. Be where your teammates need you to be and trust they'll do the same.

Oh, and play Z.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Even good hobbits are irritating to me. I really have know idea how I wound up with hobbits, habits only has one measly B in it. I'm not fixing it though because I think it gives the post character.

Great five point night for Montagna! This would be an ideal time in the season for him start a hot streak. They need to jump out early tonight, finish this series, and get out of Shire!

Agree with your last 5 sentences but note Plattsburgh is not expecting anybody to give them anything. They know they will need to earn it just like all the other good teams hope to do. Never counted you out or Genny. Just keep trucking.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

How this team handles itself tonight will be very telling....can they continue to push offensively and avoid the box....stay disciplined and stick to the game plan...put the team first and play 60 minutes? I agree now is a good time to build up to the next level (whatever that means for this group) they still have a say in their post season future...

We had Morrisville's first goal as shorthanded and the goal by Titanic right after (the Lakers' 5th) as power play. Looking at the collegehockeystats box score they don't even show the penalty to Morrisville in there at all.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Game is 3-3 now, which brings back memories to me of the 11/12/2011 home game Oswego played against Morrisville that ended in a tie. Morrisville took the lead in that game too, with Oswego coming back to tie it in the 3rd period. But they were unable to get the win in OT. Let's see if this year's team can take a similar situation and do better than what happened 2 seasons ago.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

5-3 Lakers win... it's Gilbert's job now....the boys became men...they still hold their post season destiny in their own hands...the next two weekends will be wild....

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

It looks like Titanic is hopefully doing last year and that is playing his best hockey at the end of the season. A really good weekend for him. Why was Gilbert removed and Z put it. Weirdest thing I saw tonight for I was at the RPI Freak out game against Brown. The refs went to the replay to decide if a goal should have counted. Is this going to the replay allowed in DIII if the rink has the video capability??

Just got done looking at the box score at collegehockeystats and saw a few game misconducts. What was the cause with WaterStreet and this can't sit well with Coach. It seems that the lakers are in games where this is happening. What was the story in tonights game??

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Good fight back by the boys tonight. I didn't get to attend the game but they came back from a two goal deficit to win which they have not done this year. Z started because Gilbert was very shaky in the win on Friday but it looks like Z was not great again so I think it will be Gilbert against Geneseo, lets hope he plays Brockport as well because that will mean he played well Friday. When Z was playing so well early in the season the team was rolling but without that consistency now they are really being tested.

I think you're right. Gilbert gets the look on Friday, and this is his opportunity to take back the #1 spot. I think he's been working really hard since his injury to earn back that spot. He needs to turn in a strong performance both games next weekend to show that he will be the playoff goalie. I'm not crazy about going into the playoffs with the goalie question still wide open like it is right now.

Whoever is in goal, letting in 7 goals is not going to be an option. Genny has scoring, but they can be beat. Play Genny like we played Platty last semester and we can come out with a win. Take ideas like being young, inexperienced and untested out of your head. You have the 9th best win-loss record in D3, are a consensus top 10 team, with one of the top 5 offenses in D3 and the top goal scorer in all of D3. This is a good team. There is no team in D3 right now that Oswego can't beat. But none of the rest of the games for this season are going to come easy (maybe Potsdam, but I wouldn't look past them like Genny did last week). It's Genny, Platty, then single-elimination playoffs for the rest of the season. These are all games Oswego CAN win. But they have to play their game, one of the goalies has to start showing some consistency, and the offense just has to keep on scoring goals. Trust the coach. Trust the system. Train hard. Make good things happen. There is nothing impossible for this team right now.
