Saw some Oberon on the shelves of a local store, think I should take a chance on it next time I'm in there?

Yes, yes, and yes. The best beer Bell's has, by far.

I know it's the best and I love it. I just question the age since it's close to a year old or so.

Though Oberon is good, I disagree with you. Of course, we probably like different styles of beer.

In addition, odds are that sixer has been sitting on the shelf since late September because it's only brewed seasonally from mid-spring to late summer/early fall. So unless you know it's been held in good conditions (a dark, cool storage area), I'd say it's 'purchase at your own risk'.

Would the mini-kegs be a better bet than the sixers?

It would lower the chances of the beer being light-struck, and is probably a bit safer bet. Be aware though, those mini-kegs do go flat quickly - plan on inviting some friends over unless you can drink the whole thing in about two days.

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

Really dumb question, although given the last few posts it has become the topic du jour....

Due to the store's inability to secure a case (12 bottles) of Baltika No 9 51ozers, if I were to start stockpiling bottles from there on a weekly basis (they usually stock 3-4 bottles) starting this week, for the F5 (March 18-20), they'd be more than okay?

I prefer to drink my beer the same week I bought it, given the span of time from bottling to stores (especially the harder to find ones, that don't get bought all that often, like this one). So we're looking at beer that could be sitting around a while before it even gets to the stores, and even longer before it's cracked. In a plastic bottle.

I'm thinking yes, but don't want anything to detract from the beer.

Since it's only a few weeks, I think you'll be OK. Maybe stick the bottles in a closet or (if you have one) basement to be safe.

Have you tried looking at other liquor stores? Maybe you can stop at 2 or 3 of them that week and pick up enough of it. Or you can have someone from another part of the cities pick up some at a different store.

I know there is another store owned by the same company near Ridgedale, but dunno if they have it. Good idea, though. They have 4 stores around the metro, either under the "Sid's" name or "Big Top Liquor." Both of the ones near me are HUGE.

How's that Kangas Kool-Aid taste tonight? :)

*ing awesome.

And MNS brought over Seagram's Honey Whiskey, but I have yet to try it. The Evan and Wild Turkey versions are really good. I'll report on it later. :)

Chick drinker checking in.

Cranberry vodka and sprite. Quite delicious.

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

Great Waters Brewing Co. just tapped their "WINTRYE." Had a couple for dinner and brought a growler home. It is very good. Really dark, smooth finish.

For those that haven't tried the Great Waters Brewing Co. downtown St. Paul, I highly recommend it :D

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

Had some KBC Redjacket Amber and 36 Shilling Scottish Ale tonight. Topping it off with a home brewed Kolsch. Awesome for all. :D

Seagram's Honey:

A little thinner than the Evan/Wild Turkey, and equally as sweet. The difference in thickness is negotiable, however, you have to pay attention to notice it.

So I guess it comes down to brand loyalty/cost.

Yeah, that would be the way I would go on that.

And for Hoven, I would probably just go around locating stores that have the Baltika No 9 51ozers, make a note of it on a map, maybe make an effort in making sure they would need to restock that one at that store sometime soon, and then when the time comes, just go on all out blitz on the same day. It also might be a good idea if you're just going to buy one from every store while you're casing them, it would probably be a good idea to bring a little sharpie along with you to mark the one's that are left in the store with a little dot somewhere that will let you know later on which one is the freshest one.
