Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

If I had to give a definition for its flavor I would have to go with sweet. It almost tasted like beer flavored wine if that makes any sense.

That's a good way to describe it, very much like a barley wine, but there was sort of a hint of gin flavor too. Weird stuff, and yeah, start and finish with another beer. ;)

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

You have that backwards: have the Baltika first, so you can finish with a good beer. You don't want that odd taste to last the evening. ;)

And noticed that at Plymouth Liquor (on Hwy 55, by Famous Dave's) right now, Evan Williams' American Honey has a $10 rebate. No tiny fine print, either (the clerk talked about it when I asked). Buy a 750ml, about $15, get the $10 rebate.

I'd highly recommend this, and I'm sure bbdl would, too. It's dam good stuff.
Evan Williams American Honey? Is this something new/different? or did you mean Wild Turkey American Honey?

Yeah, that's about the best I can come up with, too.

Lindeman's Framboise, Gulk. Gulk, Lindeman's Framboise: http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5_breweries/lindemans_framboise.html

Edit: although technically, this is wine flavored beer.

I see you that, and raise you New Glarus Raspberry Tart.

Schell's Pale Ale. Nothing new to anyone I'm sure, but I've been getting this as part of their Winter sampler and haven't really paid it much attention and but it's quite good in its own right. Very hoppy and it is not a wussy beer. Odd style for a German influenced brewer but I like it.

Doubtful, since he doesn't drink Turkey.

He does after he tasted my Wild Turkey American Honey...;)

Yeah, I meant Wild Turkey. bbdl = Evan, so I remembered wrongly.

And I'll drink Wild Turkey, but it's way down on my list. As in, if you buy a shot, maybe. :p

That is what I figured, but for a while I was excited, thinking that Evan came out with an equivalent to American Honey. :p

Either way, it's *ing good. And this is one (and you know how I like my booze) to keep warm until you add the ice. I tried the freezer/fridge bit, and it wasn't as fulfilling. Warm and add ice is the best way to have it.

*for the uninformed: I almost always keep my booze in the fridge, sometimes in the freezer. I like it ice cold. You're putting it on ice anyways, right? So might as well get a headstart.

Evan/HH actually does have a bourbon-based honey liqueur (looked it up after you mentioned it), but I read some reviews and they aren't quite as favorable as AH (note that I have never personally tried either). Still, it's significantly cheaper and might be worth a shot (pun intended).

Know what? I just looked at my bottle, and it IS Evan Williams Honey Reserve. Got the brand right, the specific title wrong.

Although now I have to go out sometime and get the WT version. :o

Damm, I am going to have to try that...

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

I was underwhelmed by the Baltika. It was the most drinkable malt liquor I've ever had (especially when it warmed up), but even with the 51 ouncer I found that the effects were overrated. Clearly I've had too many 8%+ beers in my day.

You folks were right about the flavor though - grape-y to say the least.

It was worth a try though. Moved on to a Sobeski & tonic or two now.

I guess the question is: was it overrated according to the volume consumed, or overrated overall? It's about 2.3 tall beers (22 oz = tall, to most restaurants/bars). That's why it has gotten a small amount of fame.

Overrated by volume. When I drink a high quality 8%+ brew, like a good barleywine, imperial stout, or double IPA, I'm usually "feeling it" after I'm done with a 12 oz. bottle. I didn't hit that point until I was halfway through the 51 ozer.

The store where I got it also carries the No. 6 Baltic Porter, so I'll probably try that at some point too, just out of curiosity. You don't see too many Russian beers out there.

I don't think I've had that. I have had the No 3, and that was tasty.

And the Baltika 9 hit me in the last third of the beer. It was like it was saving itself for that moment, much like it hit BPH and PB. Kinda like: "Not bad, not bad, what's the big deal, this is easy, what's the fuss......Oh crap. What the hell?"

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

So i just tried Anchor Steam at Old Chicago tonight. Beer Advocate had it rated pretty high. Meh at best. I'd get it again but I wasn't enamored with the beer.

My dad has really gotten in to the Steam as of late. It isn't bad but it isn't my thing either. Guess it is is original though, eh? Not many like it.

Re: Official Drinking Thread Pt 5: Four Horsemen + Jerry: It's called The Voltron!

I had that once, but it was so long ago I don't even remember what it was like.
