What kind of scotches?

How's that Booker's Bourbon? I've been meaning to try it...

I wish I could remember the names. Both were single malts aged 12 years (at least).

Bookers is fantastic. It's cask strength so the booze/$ is right up there with some that are diluted to 80-proof. Totally worth the money.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Thanks!

Most single malts are 10 or more years, so 12 puts them well in the "potentially good" category. And since you said one was $90 a bottle I'd imagine it's excellent.

My girlfriend bought me a bottle of Lagavulin 16 year. Amazing. Very smokey and peaty.

Even though your average single malt is significantly better than your average blend, my favorite scotch (and liquor in general) is still Johnny Walker Blue - a blend.

I'll try to find the name of it. It was good although I honestly liked the Booker's better, as did the rest of us. (Even though it isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison.)

Yeah, bourbon and scotch are really very different, despite both being whisk(e)y. I'm more of a scotch fan, but lately (read: in the past 2 or so years) I've ventured into bourbons and Irish whiskeys. Working through a bottle of Jameson right now. Man, that is good. Not a very complex drink, but it does the job very nicely.

Jameson is really tasty stuff, isn't it? Powers is another decent Irish, if you're on a budget.

And I'll repeat, that surprisingly (as I didn't expect it at all), Powers tastes better to me than Jameson. Not by much, but enough. And like BPH implies, it's cheaper.

I wish I could stay with Redbreast, but that's some decent coin, there.

Never had Powers. I'm nearly done with my bottle of Jameson :( so will look for it when I reload.

You're right - Powers does taste (a bit) better. Occasionally you'll find some Jameson 12 year for a good price, and that's another decent buy.

One of these years I'll get into the Bushmills and the Redbreast, so I have some comparison.

Bushmill's is okay. And Jamie 12 is obviously better than Powers.

I had a Chimay Blue last night. That's good stuff.

Balvenie single malt, not sure about the age. It just clicked in my head. I still need to ask the guy who had the bottle what age it was.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

I'll be honest - after recently spending a couple weeks sipping through a whole bottle of Balvenie 12, it was a bit of a rude awakening to go back to drinking a $20 bourbon. :o

Ain't that the truth.

Treat yourself to some Booker's. It's 120+ proof so you can actually dilute it (which is recommended by the distillers) so it's less expensive (per ounce) than the full strength stuff.

It's like living in NYC all your life and staring up at the stars only to visit the Boundary Waters and gaze up at the same sky.

Also, Brent, you might be interested in this. The Liquor Barrel is selling 750s of Knob Creek (also Jim Beam which I didn't know distilled Booker's, Knob, Makers, and obviously Jim Beam until this past weekend) for $27. Not a terrible price for a pretty good bourbon.

I'm probably going to run by and get one.

Sid's has Makers for $17. :p  Wait, misread. Knob, that's an okay price.

Yeah, I took your advice and just started to check websites of the local stores. http://www.liquorbarrel.com/

Sure enough, this one caught my eye.

It's funny what you can find doing some window shopping. I mentioned the Paulaner Weisn a few posts back, and only one store around me carried/carries it, and it's owned by the city of Plymouth, which was probably the most unlikely store to carry it.

Their Double Wood 12 is fantastic.
