Ah, so you overindulged.

I never indulged. I saw it once, went WTeff? Horrible. Then tried to avoid it all.

FTR, I still Gangnam styled (which has been RIP for months) at Shirtless Guy's wedding a couple weeks ago

I don't get it....I wanted to know how they make it, with the nitro in the bottles.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

So, what am I missing with the nitro? I mean, how is it that they are able to rifle it into a glass without it turning into a sloppy mess on the table? Obviously it has to do with the nitrogen, but I thought that nitro beers didn't do well in individual servings not directly from a nitro tap?

I'm far from a scientist, but I believe it has something to do with atmospheric pressure. CO2 is light enough that when it wants to dissipate upwards, it can, while the nitrogen can't.

Also, I thought it wasn't so much that nitro beers don't do well in individual servings as it is really difficult to do and keep pressurized.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Was over at bbdl's last night for a bonfire. His woman had a bottle of Pentagram, and offered me a sip. I took one sniff.....all the nopes.

Also got to drink a bottle (12oz variety) of the Dragon's Milk. Oh, how I have missed that so. I think I know where I can still get some, so that may be on the docket this week.

Had a nice angus steak with the Brainless On Raspberries today for lunch. Less sweet than the cherries version, and MUCH less sweet than the peaches version. Definitely the best of the series.

Also, tried the Third Shift Amber Lager last night. Nothing special, it's quite the normal beer. And that's why I love it. I don't recall the last time I had just a "normal" beer. This fits quite nicely in that category.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I tried several over the last few days (1 brewery tour, and 1 brewpub visit).

I got to Colorado Thursday morning, and had about 7 hours to kill before the concert. So I drove to Breckenridge for lunch, and to see some scenery. At Breckenridge Brewery I had a "Belgian Style Vanilla Porter Aged in Bourbon Barrels". It was excellent, unfortunately, I'm pretty sure you can only get it in at the Brewpub.

On Friday, we went to New Belgium Brewery, took the tour, tried many beers.

Biere de Garde (Lips of Faith) - Very tasty, it is a farmhouse ale, and it was good enough that I bought a bottle when I got to the liquor store at home.
S'more Porter (Lips of Faith) - I think this might only be available at the brewery, since I can't find it on the New Belgium website. I thought it was quite good. It had a strong chocolate porter flavor to begin with, and a marshmallow aftertaste. Very well done.
Paardebloem (Lips of Faith) - This was some kind of Dandelion Ale, and I only had a sip of it. It was ok, but not something that I would order again, because the others I had there were quite a bit better.
Cascara Quad (Lips of Faith) - My favorite beer that I tried at New Belgium, and I think this was the consensus among the 3 of us that were there together (me, my sister and her boyfriend). Lots of depth of flavor, that changes as you drink it. Excellent beer. I'm looking for this stuff in MN.
La Folie (Lips of Faith) - I've had this before, and I liked it then. Its a sour beer, and I like sour beers. We got to try the beer that goes into barrels, before it gets sour, and it asted like 1554. Overall, I think this is a pretty good sour beer, if you like sour beers.
Hoppy Bock - Too much hops for me. I'm not a big fan of hoppy beers, but as far as hoppy beers go, this one was decent, I just wouldn't order it if given the choice.

When I got home, got to try some more new beers, well, new to me. The New Holland Dragon's Milk aged in a Bourbon Barrel is excellent, as Brent has mentioned. Also had the Surly Pentagram, and it is a very good sour beer. Probably won't buy it again, though, as it was $25 for a bottle.

edit: ALSO! Old Chub, Scottish Ale.....Excellent beer.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Ha! I found 2 6ers of Sugar Shack in CRapids! Bought them both. Also bought some New Belgium that I tried out there, the Cascara Quad, in a bomber, and a 6er of Rolle Bolle (which I forgot to mention earlier). I also got a single bottle of Maple Bock from Hinterland Brewery, and a 6er of Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro (I couldn't resist).

Rolle Bolle - Very much a summer beer. Light and fairly sweet, and very easy to drink. I figured it would be good to have tomorrow when it is supposed to be 90+ degrees out. A good refreshing beer after work.

This liquor store had an exceptional selection of craft beers in their "Beer Cave". Rapids Liquor, just off the Hwy 10 and Foley.

It's even better on tap. I have heard a couple places around the Twin Cities have it on tap; I had it on tap in CO on one of my visits.

bbdl: That Rolle Bolle or whatever....can you give some description on the taste? Is it like the Trippel, or Blue Paddle, or something more like Blue Moon?

I had something along the similar lines of crazy (Mad Fox Brewing, Brewpub, Falls Church)... I forget the exact line of crazy but it was good. (edit: oak aged wee heavy... wee heavy is the style so it is what it says it is... 10% and tasty)

Part of me wonder if the future is in well-crafted hybrid types. Bless the breweries that don't just produce beer but produce quality beer on a regular basis.

The Breckenridge Vanilla Porter is a tasty beer. I can only imagine what it tastes like aged like that. I do like this new wave of bourbon-barrel-aged beers. :)

Yeah, I don't think those will go away... I have to think the American beer scene, once it gets over its obsession with hops, will find new ways to spin things... no sacred cows on these shores, for certain.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Well, I finally managed to fail in a completely new and remarkable way.

I managed to screw up a batch of Mr. Beer.

*sigh*

The beer itself isn't necessarily bad (I think it tastes pretty decent for being an out-of-the-box easy kind of kit for a light lager), but I did manage to screw up the secondary fermentation stage and the whole batch is pretty flat.

I thought I'd screwed up as well... until a year later having some beers some place with a reputation and came off having the same kind of taste.

I did have one bottle go bad... poor sanitation... to be honest, I was mostly afraid of the thing as it was a Mr. Beer. That whole "am I drinking poison" deal.

Anyhoo... I dumped the Mr. Beer... if I go back in then I'll do it for real-sizes. I don't know if I'd go 1 gallon or full on nuts 5 but again, i do it for real next time.

Everything "new" is a fad, frankly. The best will stick around, and the marginals will go away. Remember the barleywine fad? I don't. ;)

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

The barleywines have not stuck around here. It's mostly leftovers.

I'm just saying I like them. The brewpub I mentioned had a festival for them... didn't go as they aren't easy for me to get to... here it never was a factor but its not like there's a dominant beer scene in metro-DC.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Picked up a 6er of Breck Vanilla Porter (although I don't see anything about it specifically being aged in bourbon barrels), 2 bottles of Old Engine Oil and a single of Bell's Expedition stout.

Found a fantastic liquor store that has just an awesome selection of both domestic and imported craft beers. Looking forward to going back in a month once I'm back off of work and find a few more. They had the Left hand Milk Stout, but didn't get that this go around. Probably next time.

Vanilla Porter isn't aged in bourbon barrels by default. That's a special brew. The standard VP is still a very good beer. I've always liked it.
