Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed!

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

Be sure to report back on any progress VAIVE has made in his quest to make a professional roster.

I take it back. Per twitter chat, it looks like VAIVE signed with the Panthers organization this morning. Congrats Justin!

I think this only applies to 2 or 3 of us on here, but I talked to a buddy of mine and he said that they only issued the new ID cards to the underclassmen and those juniors and seniors still living in the dorms (all 15 of them). So old ID cards will be good for another two years at which point we are all hopefully off the season ticket wait list. Yay!

Oh, and 41 days :)

Great news! Oh wait... I won't be in Oxford for any games. :(
Planning to make the 4-hour trek up to the games at Colgate, though. I think I've recruited some Yale fans to root for the Red & White that weekend, as well. Can't wait!

Have no fear... we are ready to do battle with any student section. I hope to lose my voice singing the Fight Song that weekend.

I think my favorite non-hockey moment from the CCHA Championship game this year was when my group of six started sinigng the fight song so loud after the first goal that the girl in front of us jumped and spilt half her beer. You haven't lived until you've heard RicoforPresident sing (Yes, I am post baiting you Jordan).

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

Went to the pro-camp on Monday, it was pretty fun to watch. It started out a little slow, but after about 45 minutes they started doing offensive zone drills and such. It was nice to see some of the seniors from last year back in Oxford.

@MiamiIceHockey Tomorrow morning captains for the 2011-12 season will be announced publicly...any guesses as to who they might be? #miamiu #thebrotherhood

C - Weber
A - The Hirsch
A - Wideman or Smith

Man, what a complement. I can feel the sarcasm through the computer.

I think your captains picks are pretty spot on. Weber should be a lock for the C. Hopefully his scar gets some consideration for an A. I'll say Hirsch and Wideman will get an A.

Looks like the pro camp has been a lot of fun. Wish I was around to see it. Hobey Miele is on his way into town tonight so the rest of the week should be great.

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

Weber and The Hirsch both going to be wearing the C this year. Rico holding off on annoucing the A's until the season gets closer. Guess he's waiting to see which of the sophmores/juniors (Froshies?) are ready to step into a leadership role.

Congrats to both of them! Under 40 days!!!

Looks like the rest of the CCHA will be merging into the WCHA. Glad that they found a home but definitely didn't think it would ultimately happen that way. I hope UAH finds somewhere to go, as well.

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

Glad (most) everyone found a home.

Reading these realignment threads has been very interesting as someone who has only been following college hockey on a nation level for a couple seasons. This mentality that decisions need to be made based on what's in the best interest of college hockey just seems so out of place in today's NCAA enviorment, and I guess a little naive. While I appreciate the sentiment and wish that was how the game was played, do some of these people truly expect schools to act counter to what's in their programs' best interests? That's just not the world of major college athletics, if you want TV deals, national exposure and expansion - it's going to become a money game and for better or worse that choice was made for everyone when Pegula wrote that check (not placing any fault on the B1G, they acted on what they thought was their best move, as did we).

The UAH situation is unfortunate, but even once the B1G schools left, the remaning CCHA teams didn't seem to make any effort to include Huntsville (thus far) in the coversation on how they were going to move foreward - so the argument that their shunning was all Red Berenson's doing seems to fall apart. The couple UAH posters on this board seem like great fans so I truly hope it works out for them, but it just doesn't seem like anyone is interested.

(Being an economics major made me heartless, I swear...)

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

It's kind of funny to watch the faction wanting to see "what's best for college hockey" rotate from conference to conference to plead their case as the dominoes fall. I always thought UAH getting voted down was a combination of smaller budgeted schools not wanting to add a trip to Alabama to conference play and the false hope that Penn State would join the CCHA in a permanent 4 team pod with MSU/UM/OSU instead of destroying it.

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

628, one could argue that the remaining WCHA schools are doing what is best for college hockey by inviting all of the CCHA schools. Maybe they had no choice, but I think they did and they did not cherry pick when they could have, IMO. For Miami, I still think it is about ND and maybe Western. The NCHC needs a national sports brand badly, IMO. I know Miami had no choice but to join when invited, but I'm not happy if ND goes independent or out east. As I said a month ago, two four-team divisions in the NCHC, twenty league games to keep ND happy would be great for all the teams. It allows them to continue some old Intra-WCHA and CCHA rivalries going (OSU, UM, MSU/Miami, WMU; North Dakota, DU/Minny, Wisco, etc.) at least to some extent. Good for the pocketbook and good for the programs. Miami and Western may have to do a little more of it on the road than they would like, but that's just the way it is in the pecking order.

If ND does not join the NCHC, it will be interesting to see what happens with WMU and BG. People like to dismiss BG, but I still think Berge will get that turned around and that place will be rocking when he does.

Re: Official 2011 Miami Offseason Thread: Hawkheads face left and no scalping allowed

That's a very fair point. My assumption has always been that the talks were approached from their inception as a packaged deal for all the remaing CCHA teams and the negotiations proceeded from that starting point. So to that end it was self-perservation, with the added effect of being positive for college hockey. But if you perceive the WCHA as having all the leverage here (who are we kidding) than they very easily could have made the choice to cherry pick and you would guess LSSU and UA_ would have adondoned notions of CCHA camaraderie in a heartbeat leaving Ferris/BG to convince the AH4 to join another potentially unstable conference. If that had happened it would go to my point of doing what is best for your program.

If Notre Dame decides to do their own thing, it has to be in the best interest of Miami for BG to become team #8. As is, I'm not sure they exactly meet the NCHC's criteria of a "commitment to hockey excellence" but since that is really just bs jargon for do you have money and are you willing to spend it on hockey, you could see them fitting in. Short trip for us and potential in-state rivalry if they reemerge as a contender seem like good reasons for Miami to endorse their membership. But let's hope it's ND or ND & <--M--. As far as TV and brand recongnition go, tNational is going to be hard pressed without the Irish. That being said, I just want to see some great hockey and that's why we have B2 and All-Access!

37 Days - Love & Honor :D
