Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

A couple thoughts from Bemidji tonight...

1. Cook didn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence with his play, but I guess you can't argue with 1 goal allowed on 30 shots. I didn't think the goal he gave up was that great. But he made up for it with a great save on that breakaway at 2-1. That was a game-changing save.

2. I thought the 5-minute major was a little questionable, but I can understand trying to protect hits to the head. Plus, prior to that rush up the ice, an MSU player got laid out with a check, which would have been a beautiful open ice hit if he had had the puck at the time. So I guess if you add up that, with the second hit, plus the questionable too many men penalty against MSU, it adds up. Mueller's major at the end of the game was a pretty comical make-up call. He didn't even slash the kid; he tripped him.

3. If they had video review up here, MSU's second goal definitely wouldn't have counted. Stewart kicked it in.

4. Pitlick's goal was absolutely sick. I can't think of the last time I saw an MSU player make an individual move like that for a goal.

The major powerplay(s) had to be entertaining to watch. Can't say I have ever heard of 3 goals during one major.

One of my pet peeves during a major (or any PP for that matter) is when the team with the man advantage plays with little urgency and is overly patient, leads to no goals or worse a lazy penalty negating a huge portion of the PP. Put the pressure on and get them moving. Score early, score often!:D

I think I've seen it happen before, but few and far between. Fun history: The old rule was that 2-minute penalties didn't come off the board with a goal either, but Montreal Canadiens in the 1960s used to routinely score two, three, sometimes four goals on a powerplay, so they changed the rule.

Here was another weird bit from last night: After MSU's second goal, the linesman slipped and fell backwards. The next shift, Kurt Davis slipped and fell backwards leading to BSU's shorthanded breakaway, and the following shift, a Bemidji forward slipped and fell, allowing MSU to score their third goal. All three had to have tripped within a five foot radius of each other. I don't know if it was something up with the ice or what.

It's going to be a tough call with the lineup tonight. Before last night's game, I would have said take Zuck and Jokinen out for Dorr and Gaulrapp, but Jokinen almost created three or four goals last night. I'm excited to see what Dorr can do once he gets paired up with Mueller again.

I am also excited to see what happens when Dorr is in the lineup.
Didn't the Mavs score 3 goals on one major in the epic come back against Denver a few years ago at the cell. I'll have to check the facts on that.
Will Lee be in goal tonight?

good games. Congrats mavs. hope you take it to the rest of the wcha this year. the few of your faithful fans who were at the game tonight got to see a pretty good game.

best of luck.

Nice to get a sweep on the road against a highly ranked in state rival.
Nice to see Dorr get a couple of points in his first game as a MAV, hope its the beginning of a trend.
RHZ, thanks for the score thread, I had to do double christmas party duty tonight and only got to listen to the game in between in the car and read it when I got home.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

impressive weekend for the mavs, and several impressive individual efforts as far as the box scores tell... glad to see dorr show up and produce right out the gates, glad phil cook played well in his first start, good to see austin lee bounce back from a nasty saturday night last weekend.

nothing to share, just wanted to drop in with my "ole".

How come there was no thread for the Bemidji series?

This is it I guess. Nice job Mankato.

I'm not surprised by the sweep at all. I think it's a joke having anyone from Bemidji's "conference" ranked in the top ten. Maybe if they were were unbeaten in their non conference schedule. Anyway, the Mavs are playing well and cold beat anyone in the country now. Yet it will still be very difficult for them to finish in the top six of the WCHA. Go figure.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Saturday:

1. If it wasn't for both goalies, there's no way MSU would have won. Lee was really, really good after that first shot, and Dugas is a talented kid, but had a really rough night. He Salo'd the first goal, and then Dorr's goal was pretty weak too.

2. I really thought BSU should have gotten a too many men call on their first goal. Read jumped on the ice early to intercept that pass before he skated down and scored. It was close, but I've seen that call made before. Maybe there was a little instant karma with Hayes tying the game on that cheapie a few minutes later.

3. Dorr definitely looked like a kid that hadn't played in a real game for two games. He was brutal in the first period, but by the end of the game, he was starting to look pretty good. His goal was pretty cool to see because you could tell how genuinely happy the team was for him. You would have thought he scored the winner in overtime the way all the guys on the ice rushed over to celebrate with him, and then he got mobbed by everyone on the bench when he skated back.

4. The Mavs did a tremendous job sacrificing to block shots on Saturday. Bemidji loves to tee things up from the point and MSU took that away from them.

5. Losing Hunt for 2/3s of the game really hurt Bemidji, especially on the powerplay. Losing Hayes was pretty big for MSU. He was on one of the two lines they tried to match up with Read's line all weekend and is one of the better defensive forwards.

All in all a really huge weekend for the Mavs. They went from 31 up to 23 in the RPI and now they've got an opportunity to make a little run at an at-large tournament bid. Bemidji is a really fun trip to take. Easily the nicest opposing fans anywhere.

I believe that the Mavericks did something this year that has never been done in the history of College Hockey. All 3 goalies won the first game that they ever played in the same season.

Technically it was the first game they started, since Cook cleaned up in the Wisconsin and Minnesota debacles.

That is kind of a funny stat though, considering Kyle Nixon was the last MSU goalie to win in his first start.

MSU vs. Badgers... I believe it was in '04...

Backes makes a last ditch effort, stares at Likens and he falls over in fear, Backes dekes Bruckler and puts it top shelf to save the game with moments left.

And they're still not wowing me, but I still can respect this Mavs team...

Not a big surprise here with Backes being named to U.S. Olympic team. Congrats to David!

Here's the release from MSU.
