Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Murdoch was just fine. As was Cook, IMHO. The rest of the team just ****ing sucked ***. No excuse. Troy is not a good coach. We all know this. We need team leaders to put this team where they need to be.

Tonight, there wasn't even a glimmer of a leader on the ice. ***

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

I place the blame solely on Troy Jutting.

I can't agree, but can't disagree. The players have a responsibility too - One thing I can say about Troy Jutting squads historically, is that they play hard, scrap, and never give up. However tonight we looked like a bad high school team. There was no desire, and certainly no chemistry. We need to take a hard look at line combos and a harder look at attitude. I'm just disgusted at that product tonight.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Unless the fans are willing to chip in to buy out his contract, it's not gonna happen (and probably not then.) They aren't going to eat a single dollar of his contract in good economic times; there's no way they'd do it when they are getting ready to start laying off professors and staff.

Craig Dahl quit at SCSU when the "support" had enough. We can only hope for the same...

Mike Guntzel is available. He quite CC to be closer to home (in IOWA for ****s sake). Pick up the phone and get him in Kato. JFC, we could have had Blaise TWICE! All it took was a ****ing phone call... (and money, but that could have been done, trust me.)

Too bad the contract doesn't reflect the actual quality of coaching... then we'd easily be able to buy it out for a table dance at Mettler's. Of course, Jutting would still owe us $9 after that.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Tonight was the first night I have ever booed the Mavs... and they earned it.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

It's not "rookies" so much as it is "seniors and juniors". Murdock was fine. There were 18 bigger problems out there for the Mavericks tonight that need fixing before we can even begin to talk about Murdock.

The Badgers are a good team, and it's one thing to lose because you don't have the talent. But when you lose every single battle along the boards, that's got nothing to do with talent and everything to do with lack of effort and lack of toughness. That's got to be one of the worst efforts I've ever seen from a Minnesota State team. They were just soft all over the ice.

Hopefully there's a lot of lineup changes for tomorrow night. I'd start with putting Mueller in for Mouillerat. Mueller isn't a big scorer, and makes occasional mistakes, but at least the kid plays hard and plays bigger than his size, which were two things nobody else did tonight. Put Gaulrapp in for anyone. He at least plays like he appreciates the opportunity to be out there. And unless he's hurt or something, there's absolutely no excuse for Cooper sitting behind some of the defensemen that are playing.

There's still time to get things figured out, but they've got to make some big changes. What made their team special two years ago is that they had some upperclassmen that really stepped it up and played the best hockey of their careers. The current upperclassmen haven't shown a tenth of that urgency or leadership yet.

I agree with everything here--I'm not sure about the exact changes for tomorrow, but there has to be something bettter. It really is up to the skaters on this team to get it done. Period.

That effort tonight sucked. I stayed to the end on Friday (and booed, too) and will go the distance Saturday--win or lose, I just want to see some ****ing EFFORT. It isn't that hard. Thank you.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

I'll be missing each game this weekend. I'm sure this will be the one and only weekend where i can't catch at least one game or the other...

Turns out I didn't really miss anything yesterday anyways.
Hopefully by tomorrow morning I can say that I regret not being there for tonight's game. :)

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Maize, I agree with you, but for a first year goalie to get no support won't do much for his confidence. (see last goal on Murdoch). I believe that we have at least one goalie that will do very well for us this year. I would expect the mavs to come out with their asses on fire tonight like they have done in the past on Saturdays after a beating on Friday. If they don't the arena will be as empty as last night.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Kurt Davis is sitting out tonight. Juttings decision.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

OK, that's 2 points. :D

Now, points next weekend would be gravy. Uhg. :(

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

That was more like it. Much better performance.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Austin Lee impressed me some tonight. He got a bit of puck luck there in the 3rd, but it was something the Mavericks were due from the weekend. The biggest thing he seemed to do was stay calm when the puck was bouncing around. (Same for Wisco's goalie, Gudmandson, too--I was starting to wonder if we'd get a bounce by him there in those 2 5:00 min majors.)

Murdoch showed some good instincts on Friday--it was really too bad what he had to work with in front of him.

After the first 10 minutes or so Saturday, there was much better performance by the skaters. What I still didn't understand through the end of the game was why the team insisted on weak passes in the offensive zone and through the neutral zone. Seriously, you can't move the puck THROUGH the opposition. It doesn't work in pee-wees and it most definetly doesn't work at the D1 level.

Oh, and Mavs, please, STAY OUT OF THE BOX!* I know the Campion/Burline wheel of justice is hard to predict, but show a little dicipline. Maybe it was that Wisconsin just battled harder for the pucks and the team was just behind all weekend? However, that kind of performance next weekend will yeild double-diget goals against.

*Except for the last penalty--that was a goal saver. I was waiting for Campion to cross his arms above his head for the rarest of rare in College Hockey--a penalty shot. But, it saved the goal and allowed the Mavs to ice the puck in the last minute.

I half expected it, but it shouldn't have been called. You really need to be totally in the clear, a good step ahead of the pursuit, and get dragged down for it to be a penalty shot. That was not the case here.

Good job by Lee tonight, but I'm still not convinced. He gives up HUGE rebounds. He's got to absorb them a little more or he will pay for them.

And, everyone, the kid's name is Murdock, not Murdoch. Let's get it straight.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Every weekend this season looks like it is going to be a battle to get points. (even more so than any year in the WCHA). That being said this weekend will be very difficult. With Denver coming off of a shut out sweep of MN and not knowing what MSU squad will show up. I hope the Mavs can come out of Denver with a/some point/s. Good showing on Saturday, I hope those players are rewarded with time on Friday.

The team will have to do so without Captain Irwin: http://mankatofreepresshockey.blogspot.com/2009/10/irwin-to-miss-denver-series.html

It wouldn't have been a goal or a penalty if that defenseman hadn't been out of position to begin with. It's not enough to just stand somewhere near the blueline when the other team is sending their forwards to that blueline too. If he had played back a couple of feet and taken away that angle, Wisconsin wouldn't have had that scoring chance. That happened a couple times on Saturday, but shouldn't happen in the last minute of a one-goal game.

Same with their first powerplay goal. Mouillierat took a good penalty on a 2-on-1, but it's only a 2-on-1 because a defenseman made a mistake turning the puck over on his own blueline.

A lot of it is about getting better mentally. They've put together two really solid efforts on Saturday. Now they've got to find a way to do that every night.

A little off topic!!! But, former MSU Pitcher Jon Bjelland is currently competing in the ReMax World Long Drive Championship. He just won his last round with a drive of 415 Yards!!! He is in the last 12 guys in the competition.
