Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

Problem is the Mavs band is exceptionally crappy... to the point that it's embarassing

It can't be more embarassing than our band on Thunder Island. Bea Arthur blowup doll is our bass player.

UND has got it figured out...

They "pipe in" the beats just like we do in Mankato, but they also have their pep band present...

all they do is play "IN HEAVEN THERE IS NO BEER....." one time every period, and then occasionally beat the snot out of some drums to make a lot of noise in high pressure situations.

That's all the Mavericks fanbase needs is a song about BEER and some really really noisy drums now and then, it's brilliant!

Disappointment in Duluth

It wasn't an ideal start to conference play for the Mavs, dropping both games to the Bulldogs this weekend. UMD's top guns Justin Fontaine, Mike Connolly and Jack Connolly proved too much to handle, the group provided every goal for Duluth on the weekend. Once again, MSU spent inordinate time in the penalty box, and was punished by UMD's potent powerplay. If the stove is hot, don't touch it! Saturday night, Joe Schiller and Nick Canzanello took two undisciplined penalties and the Mavs got burned. Maybe I foolishly thought that this team would be somehow different, having good team speed we shouldn't be taking stick-infraction penalties, and certainly not hot-headed "dumb" penalties, but like a recurring nightmare I saw the same familiar indiscipline. It's time to clean it up, actually it's long overdue, because too often penalties are directly responsible for our losses, as they were on Saturday.

In the latest chapter of the goalie battle, Kevin Murdock continues to prove his case. I think he's the better goaltender, and I hope to see him this Friday when Bucky comes to town. Austin Lee did face a whopping 48 shots on Saturday, but also let in a few softies, and continues to look slow and/or out of position. At the very least I'd like to see Murdock on Friday, and let him earn the starting privileges for Saturday. I know I'm making this look like a no-brainer, which isn't fair to Lee, but I've talked to multiple people who are clearly seeing things in the same way.

Look for more later in the week as the Mavericks look to get back on track in a big home series vs. Wisconsin

How about stopping the Ole cheer? I mean, its a European soccer cheer. And there are two things really wrong with that. European. And Soccer. Plus the Montreal Canadians do it, so that makes 3 things wrong with it.

Why would anyone in their right mind stop something that bothers the opposing fans? Do you see the Hawkeyes paint the visiting lockerroom another shade other than pink? Nope. It works for what we want out of it.

I hate the Olé cheer, but if the fans of other teams hate it more, I can learn to live with it.

They're the Canadiens, not the Canadians.

Really, why are so many opposing fans so worried about our celebrations? It's rather humorous. It's something different. Our fans like it. Our team seems to like it. Opposing coaches mention how much it revs up our team and distracts theirs. Who really cares where it came from? For God's sake, "No Beer" is a polka song.....that's not exactly a "hockey song".

From uwbadgers.com

QUESTION #10: You've been asked this before, but Mankato's rink is not like Engelstad or Mariucci or the Kohl Center, but it's downright crazy. But is it the rink, is it the fans, the team itself, or a combination of all that makes it so difficult to play there?

EAVES: It's a combination. I was talking to Michael Cerniglia, our Director of Hockey Operations, aka DOHO, and it is an amazing type of rink. Like he said, well, it's a tough rink to play in because it's a small rink. I said, no, Mike, it's Olympic size, but you don't realize that until you get there. And then the way they play, the shape of the building makes it seem smaller because they're right on top of you, then the fans. It's like a junior rink, and it's a tough building to play and win in, as we know firsthand.

The year has just started and I think we have already set a new record in regards to the number of non-maverick fans posting their distain for our goal celebration, do people think we care that they want us to change it?
(Just had to chime in on the subject)
This thread has been very quiet this year so far. I want to know what people think of the developing goalie situation. I liked Murdoch before the year started and am sticking with it. I think they will continue to share time but Murdoch looks more confident in net.

Murdoch is starting tonight.

I'm looking forward to [presumably] seeing them both play this weekend. I hope each has a good game to which I'll be better suited to form an [early] opinion.

I'm hoping Murdock is stellar tonight, and never gives the job back.

I think we are rebuilding for the 2012-13 season when we get a new coach!!

He got a four-year extension. That's 09-10, 10-11, 11-12, 12-13. There won't be a new coach before 2013-14, and don't kid yourself, probably not then.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Minnesota State Maverick Hockey Thread: Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole!

so much for this, hopefully we can chalk it up to "rookie(s)" hopefully tomorrow will be better, I will be at that game!

It's not "rookies" so much as it is "seniors and juniors". Murdock was fine. There were 18 bigger problems out there for the Mavericks tonight that need fixing before we can even begin to talk about Murdock.

The Badgers are a good team, and it's one thing to lose because you don't have the talent. But when you lose every single battle along the boards, that's got nothing to do with talent and everything to do with lack of effort and lack of toughness. That's got to be one of the worst efforts I've ever seen from a Minnesota State team. They were just soft all over the ice.

Hopefully there's a lot of lineup changes for tomorrow night. I'd start with putting Mueller in for Mouillerat. Mueller isn't a big scorer, and makes occasional mistakes, but at least the kid plays hard and plays bigger than his size, which were two things nobody else did tonight. Put Gaulrapp in for anyone. He at least plays like he appreciates the opportunity to be out there. And unless he's hurt or something, there's absolutely no excuse for Cooper sitting behind some of the defensemen that are playing.

There's still time to get things figured out, but they've got to make some big changes. What made their team special two years ago is that they had some upperclassmen that really stepped it up and played the best hockey of their careers. The current upperclassmen haven't shown a tenth of that urgency or leadership yet.

I think the hockey fans in Mankato need to do everything they can to get rid of this POS. Jutting obviously can't get the job done. I've been watching the Mavs since '99 and this has got to be the most pathetic performance I have ever seen from them. I place the blame solely on Troy Jutting.

Unless the fans are willing to chip in to buy out his contract, it's not gonna happen (and probably not then.) They aren't going to eat a single dollar of his contract in good economic times; there's no way they'd do it when they are getting ready to start laying off professors and staff.
