Obama XXIV: Forward ... pause ... rewind ... play

Re: Obama XXIV: Forward ... pause ... rewind ... play

It is concerning to me at least that the two biggest 'achievements' of the current administration include unelected people in small groups making multi-billion dollar decisions with hazy or non-existent congressional oversight.

Guess we have different opinions of 'biggest achievements'. I thought you were going to say bringing to justice of OBL or ending the Iraq war or the doubling of the stock market (which is largely based on corporate earnings) since the quarter he took over.

To be fair, when Republicans do that it's for their own personal profit, so they tend to have well-defined goals and good process control. :D

Well, when the reds take the WH, this election or next, there will be much wailing when the blues figure out that they have created the opportunity for their nemesis to run consumer protection and health care with a small, unelected group.

It is a bad precedent and will lead to even more battling and paybacks.

That's like saying the guy who took over for Noah presided over the biggest drought in history. The stock market was going to rebound even if Rob Schneider was elected...Obama is no fan of business, markets or capital gains...what's next, Obama is causing global warming to increase?

Given the choice we had 4 years ago-I think i would have voted for Noah.:)

That was the 2004 election, certainly. A dope, a fiend, a twit, and a cad. Nice.

I'm actually pretty comfortable with the choices in 2008 and 2012. Well, 7/8ths of them anyway.

I just wonder who will receive the presidential nomination for the "The Rent is 2 **** High" party. :D

Consumer protection and health care are the very sort of things that should not be run by elected officials. The Center for Disease Control doesn't poll the masses on which plagues they should protect against.

EOP offices have two very different kinds of staff: politicals and independent civil servants. Politicals are the sort of morons you see on talk shows; they belong to a party and they serve the administration, and their job is to see that the broad policy initiatives of the president are carried out by the executive branch. The civil servants are the people who actually have expertise, education, and experience, and who do the actual work. They are the same as the people who work in the private sector.

People outside the process tend to mix the two groups up, but they are very different (and revile one another). It's a common fallacy that the politicals are "running" the government. Not really. They set certain goals and exclude others, but they don't actually "do" much of anything. At most they send vague signals that are translated into actual action by the people who really know what's going on.

Reminds me of that great P. J. O'Rourke quote: "Republicans are just as bad as Democrats, but at least you know they're trying to make a buck out of it," or something like that.

Two of my favorites are:

"I'm the most honest politician in Chicago, because I'm a crook and I'm not afraid to admit it"

and

"James Michael Curley was the best mayor Boston ever had. For every dollar he stole from us, he gave back 50 cents"

We could use Noah right now, given that we could use a leader that could save us from a pending flood of problems. Though compared to building an ark, fixing this country might scare even Noah away. I wonder how the media would attack Noah? He did have that one episode where he got drunk.

But did he go skinny dipping? THAT's really important!!

Did you read the article? This is exactly the kind of person we want picked up and detained. Otherwise we end up with Aurora happening all over again.

Our system is designed to err on the side of the individual in these cases. It can be a close call. But, what happened at Aurora or anywhere else is irrelevant. Each case must be decided on its own merits. That said, based on the article, I'd have to say the officials acted appropriately. If this guy had harmed himself or others, can you imagine the wailing? And much of it would be coming from the same people who are complaining now.

And how far are we going to go with this? Do you recommend we go to Kim Jong-Il levels, where crying crocodile tears is worth jail time?

Re: Obama XXIV: Forward ... pause ... rewind ... play

True. That's a key determiner of whether he'd right the good ship USA.

I'm probably exposing my ignorance on matters Biblical here, but when did the Sea of Galilee become so important a site of veneration that it's inappropriate to swim in it? Or, one assumes, fish in it. Or raft across it. The Isrealis engage in these activities, but most of them are Jews. What about Christians? Do any visiting Christians ever swim in it (with or without trunks)? If yes, then what's all the hubub about, bub?

Incidentally, Ben Quayle represents me in Congress. And re-districting has put him in a race with another incumbent Republican, who is spinning this event as an example of Quayle's unfitness for office. I've already voted for Quayle, so I've got no way to express my "shock" and "outrage" that some (other) clown "washed his winkie" in the Sea of Galilee.

As I say, close call. Kim Jong Il or Stalin or Lavrenty Beria have nothing to do with it. Different people might have come to a different conclusion. I understand slippery slope arguments, I just don't think one applies here.

My post was tongue in cheek. Of course skinnydipping (absent significant extenuating circumstances of course) is unimportant in determining our leader. Probably most if not all other candidates have skinnydipped a time or three. But, this is election season, so we see all sorts of things thrown around to try to gain advantage that shouldn't be important (and important stuff ignored).

I wasn't responding to you, Bob. It was Politico that erroneously reported an FBI "investigation" of the incident. Apart from the obvious jurisdictional questions, why would the FBI (or anyone else, for that matter) care? As you're doubtless aware, Schweikert is trying to turn this into Mark Foley redux, but he's about the only one.

So... If Obama gets the credit for doubling the stock market, does he also get the blame for the sh*t state the economy is in?
