Derp now at DEFCON 12.

First off, DEFCON only goes to 5. Secondly, a higher number translates to a more peaceful state / lower state of readiness.

For reference, the US hit DEFCON 2 during the Cuban missile crisis - where many of our planes were in the air carrying nuclear weapons and were waiting for orders to send them toward the USSR to end civilization as we know it.

Lastly, we don't need to say "Derp at DEFCON __". I say call it "DERPCON __". It's not a defense condition, it's a derp condition.

I would question whether you can read and understand what I am saying, but Scooby has shown continually you have no ability to use reading comprehension skills and think for yourself so why waste the 10 seconds typing it.

Yes, in that scenario, DEFCON 1 was definitely reached since a launch order was given.

In the movie, they're carping over something like 15% of the missiles not being fired as justification to use a supercomputer - which is humorous given the number of warheads we had back then. Even retaliating with 85% of our strategic arsenal, there would be way more than enough warheads to wipe out basically every hint of civilization in the USSR/China/wherever else we were targeting at the time.

At the beginning, the film depicts elaborate measures to hide the nature of a missile silo. Fake farm, fake crops, hidden elevators, etc. Like you could dig a hole that deep, drop a Minuteman in there, and the neighbors wouldn't notice or figure it out. The AF wanted to make me a missle launch officer, I declined. Not that I was worried about incinerating Vladivostok. I was concerned about going asiatic, eating TV dinners, with my pants bloused, wearing a chrome helmet and a blue dickie, in a hole in the ground, for a week at a time. And to keep our minds off the boredom, they'd increase the chicken bleep by a factor of about 10. And I'd be the guy in charge of the chicken bleep. Pass.

And the idea that we would put a glorified adding machine in charge of our land based nuclear deterrent was beyond farcical. And having done so, we have no way to turn the thing off? Right.

Yeah, hiding a missile silo is utter nonsense - any country with spy satellites would notice the ongoing construction (and depending on timing, possibly the loading) of the silos. Anyone living within a few miles of a missile field would know it's there (or suspect as much) based on the restricted access fence and military guards present at all the access points.

One of my favorite aspects of that movie was when all the nuclear war scenarios were being run in rapid succession. One of them showed the US nuking a bunch of countries in Africa, IIRC - that one made no sense at all (who the **** has nukes in Africa?). I guess that's one way of ending civil wars in places like the Congo.

I remember reading an article in some AF publication about the concept of "Launch on warning," or "Launch under attack." That we would launch all of our Minutemen the moment we got a launch confirmation from the Soviet Union. The idea being that their birds would hit empty silos. Our official policy has always been that we wouldn't do that. That we would ride out the first strike, then respond. Yet our missile crews practiced it all the time. Just to keep Ivan on his toes.

The late John Spencer played the officer who wouldn't "turn his key." When we first see him, he's raving about some really good drugs he'd recently consumed.

Besides, what's so important about reducing the unemployment rate now, as opposed to six months, or a year, or a year and a half ago when the rate was at or above 9% like is is now? The Congress is at an all time low. Dems @ 28 and GOP @ 19. But I will still venture that over 70% (I know, an all time low) will get returned next November. I'd like all of them turned out to the real world.

You're right, unfortunately. My question would be, why have term limits never been enacted for both houses of Congress? (I know why, it just seems like this is something that could've been established 200 years ago, before $$$ and R vs. D)

I'd imagine it's because congressional boundaries are redrawn every ten years, and that traditionally has involved major electoral shenanigans. The borders of states are not subject to this exercise in "democracy." FWIW, I've always opposed term limits. Frankly, if we want to elect people from "pocket boroughs" then so be it.
