Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Wait, "intelligent conservatives?" Defined as those who agree with you? Puhleez. You just can't help yourself, can you?

Lighten up, Francis. "Intelligent conservatives" and "intelligent liberals" meaning people who after a few years get over their party's talking points and make some judgments based on realities, not fantasies. Of course they may come to different conclusions from one another. That's kinda what makes them intelligent.

You just can't help yourself, can you? You really are a little ball of rage just looking for a fight.

Defined as those who are Barry Goldwater/Richard Nixon conservatives, not the current crop of Tea Party lunatics running the asylum.

I'm pretty sure Barry Goldwater would be supporting cutting the budget significantly if he were still around. He'd be totally appalled at the monstrous size of the federal government now.

He'd be willing to cut the military as well, though. And he wouldn't cut taxes in the face of the huge deficit. And he wouldn't deal in all the social issue b.s. that's been going on, either. I'm somehow guessing he'd be willing to take out the environmental and abortion riders if it meant passing a budget with cuts.

The Tea Party, like most crazy people, is right about a few things. But their derp overshadows it all.

IINM Barry had a soft spot for environmentalism. I may be thinking of a different southwestern conservative, but I don't think so. It's pretty in the West -- for the most part they're not willing to turn the world into a toilet just so some MBA a-hole can get a younger trophy wife.

It would be hysterical to see Goldwater's or, for that matter, Reagan's take on today's GOP. They'd probably go full-bore Paultard on their sorry asses. And the TPers? Um, no... not even at the service entrance.

Touchy? It's not like we couldn't all retire if we got a buck for every post of yours in which you cliam the intellectual high ground for your point of view. You occasionally throw in "a plague on both their houses" post, but you spend a lot of time assuring the world how dumb people who disagree with you are. And, by extension, how smart you are. You're clever and entertaining but that doesn't make you right. Naturally, it has to be the "rage" talking. Anyone who disagrees with you or any other libtard HAS to have something wrong with them. Right? Only some fundamental flaw could explain the stupidity of disagreeing with the revealed word. Bosh.

Maybe he'd support major cuts in defense spending. But as a three star general in the AF reserve, I doubt he'd favor the kind of cuts favored by the Gerald Nadlers of the world. In fact, I'm pretty sure Barry would favor putting GPS fins on Nadler and dropping HIM on Qadaffi's troops. ;)

You've gotta love a guy who once said: "All GOOD Christians should kick Jerry Falwell in the azz."

Barry appeared on the Dinah Shore talk show once. Dinah was pretty liberal and her other guest was Hal Linden, also pretty liberal. The subject of the '64 campaign and Vietnam came up and Dinah asked Barry what he would have done there. He replied: "Turn it into a swamp." Dinah and Linden required medical intervention.

Didn't know too much about Barry...but he looks like a guy to like/respect. A few goodies:

- Goldwater viewed abortion as a matter of personal choice, not intended for government intervention.
- Notwithstanding his prior differences with Dwight D. Eisenhower, Goldwater in a 1986 interview rated him the best of the seven Presidents with whom he had worked.
- 'Well, aren't you going to ask me about the Iran arms sales?' It had just been announced that the Reagan administration had sold arms to Iran. And I said, 'Well, if I asked you, what would you say?' He said, 'I'd say it's the god-****ed stupidest foreign policy blunder this country's ever made!'" (note: Barry had passed by the time of Iraq)
- In 1996, he told Bob Dole, whose own presidential campaign received lukewarm support from conservative Republicans: "We're the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that?"
- A few years before his death he went so far as to address the unprincipled establishment "republicans", "Do not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and you've hurt the Republican party much more than the Democrats have."

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

I always like this one by Goldwater:
"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is "needed" before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' "interests," I shall reply that I was informed that their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can."

I'm guessing he'd be more radical in cutting the size of the federal government than the tea party folks are. After all, he spoke this at a time when there wasn't much of a federal deficit, and it was a tiny fraction of the size it is now.

Deeper Cuts

The Republican Study Committee has come up with deeper cuts, including defense. I haven't looked at it too closely, but it seems promissing. Going forward I could see the Ryan budget being the maximum starting point for other budget proposals since Obama's budget has been completely blown out of the water.

So. They're still stealing money, right?

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Show me anyone who is taking it seriously.

As opposed to anyone except Fox "News/Propaganda" who is taking Ryan's budget seriously (except to drive trucks through the gaping holes in it).

So in your world the gov't can take all of your salary and that would be fine as the since it is the price of freedom? You seem to be saying that everything the gov't does is necessary. To take your argument to the extreme why don't we have them run the show. I remember a different country a few years back that had some great 5 year plans.

There's the straw man. No one in the government is taking all of anyone's salary. Try again, or enjoy Rwanda. I don't care which.

So at what point is it too much? At what point do you say that the Federal gov't has gone too far?

When your "small government" gives a damm what happens in my doctor's office or my bedroom.

You should take a look at your big gov't a bit closer if your so concerned with people imposing their will/beliefs on others.

And thats not "my" small gov't.

No more respected man has served in the Senate in my lifetime. Barry's last big act as senator and chairman of the armed services committee was a reorganization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It passed 100-0. Any questions?

Yeah, Priceless, his small government doesn't collect taxes.
