Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

I'm sure Dems are trying to soft-peddle it but I also don't think it's any more of a seismic shift in public attitudes than 2008 was. The incumbent gets blamed when times are tough. This will be bigger than usual because times are tougher than usual. I don't think people are confused -- they're voting for "Change!" again, because that's what we do when the status quo aint makin' it.
I think you're right on with this. "It's the economy, stupid!" It's not hard to imagine unemployment coming "all the way down" to about 7%, people getting inflationary raises again, new housing construction taking off (along with all the ancillary employment), and Obama winning reelection in a landslide as people think, "gee, an 8.5% return on the TARP bailout wasn't a bad deal at all"... although some of us would consider the moral hazard involved there to negate the desirability of the gains. The one difference this time around, is that it's possible the tea party has widened the playing field by getting some redneck friends of mine passionately involved in politics, who likely wouldn't have voted very often in the past. Still not enough to change the big picture of getting jerked between two parties of idiots, of course.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Here's the internal NPR memo on Williams' firing:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/10/21/raw-data-npr-internal-memo-juan-williams/

So, none of the NPR personnel on the air are supposed to express their own opinions on their shows, but only the guests? Apparently Vivian Schiller, President and CEO of NPR, has never listened to NPR, as her hosts regularly opine on issues.

No kidding. Plus it's not like Williems was expressing his opinion of Muslims to begin with. He was only expressing how he reacted. In fact he expressed his dislike of his own reaction.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

NPR's decision to fire Juan Williams is indefensible, deplorable. . .and entirely predictable.

Leave it to the liberals to completely shoot themselves in the foot. Fox News is going to get a huge boost from this and all liberal media will again go down the tubes. Democrats and liberals are their own worst enemies.

EDIT: I wonder if Mara Liasson is next?

And the other side of the coin.

You know NPR messed up big time when people as diverse as Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, Sarah Palin, and William Kristol are taking them to task! But the damage is largely done, as it will be much harder for NPR to put forward the appearance of being an at least somewhat unbiased news outlet after this major faux pas.

And a good editorial about how it's ok to smear everyday Americans with no threat of firing or other actions, but at the slightest hint of smearing Muslims, you are toast.

I'd really really like to think the media in this country try to do a halfway decent job, but it gets harder and harder to rationally consider this to be a possibility.

Yep. They take office and they seem to think people were in love with them the whole time, instead of realizing they simply were the beneficiary of the Bush regime's complete incompetence and corruption.

Oh well. Time for another batch of senators.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Bill O'Reilly's ratings just went through the roof. Juan is on again tonight.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Juan Williams is a liberal?

Certainly left of center. Not in Daily Kos or Moveon territory, but a liberal. Of the kind we used to have plenty of in our public life, Hubert Humphrey, Scoop Jackson, etc. But mostly they're gone now. Replaced by repulsive little people with loud voices whose principal credentials are a hatred for or at least distrust of America and everything it stands for.

And before anyone rushes to their keyboard to point out "right wingers are just as bad," I'll agree, at least in principle. We used to have giants: Ev Dirksen and Barry Goldwater, to name two. Now we have Harry ("the surge won't work, the war is lost") Reid. Some of the Tea Party candidates make me weep. Under normal circumstances I would never consider voting for any of them. I'm a big believer in the Buckley rule: nominate the most conservative candidate who can win in the general.

I found some quotes from the Dirksen today: he once said that anyone who moved from the House to the Senate would raise the IQ of both bodies.

Juan Williams is a liberal?

Not really. He's either a moderate who has lost his history of being measured...and/or someone who likes a paycheck.

Frankly I think it was great firing Juan. I've been disappointed not in his participation at Fox as he veered towards too much opinion...which intially I thought might be a positive in bringing perspective to a place where frequently there is little.

If your employer builds a platform on analysis vs. opinion...and you leave that platform, you deserve to be fired. Things are often as they should be.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Yeah, I was being a little facetious. I understand Juan is left of center. A lot of times on Fox News though it seems his role is to be the sacrificial lamb so to speak, he doesn't defend his positions as strongly as some others do.

Edit: Haven't had the chance to watch her show, though I've no doubts it's terrible, but I think of Kathleen Parker's "conservatism" in the same way.

Thus speaketh the liberal hypocrite, who believes the first amendment applies only to those with whom he agrees. Intellectual dishonesty of the purest sort. Mr. Williams did not take vows of intellectual celibacy to work for NPR.

Mr. Williams, along with Bill Cosby and a handfull of others, has been willling to take on the social pathologies afflicting African Americans, which deserves our respect and gratitude.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Personally, I like Juan Williams. I think he's great. Basically just left of center, maybe more. But what he said that resulted in his firing isn't that ridiculous. It's human nature.

Bill O'Reilly's ratings just went through the roof. Juan is on again tonight.

He looked like he was going to cry. He's also hosting the Factor tomorrow night. Oh, and he's not going to suffer.

Fox News Chief Executive Roger Ailes handed Williams a new three-year contract Thursday morning, in a deal that amounts to nearly $2 million, a considerable bump up from his previous salary, the Tribune Washington Bureau has learned. The Fox News contributor will now appear exclusively and more frequently on the cable news network and have a regular column on FoxNews.com.

What does the first amendment have to do with this?
