Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Valid...but it doesn't change the point. For the top 5% and an income of $611k, fully 72% of income is at a 33% or 35% bracket. That will put the real 18% tax paid a far cry from the tax that was origiinally levied whether its 34% or 30%....the rich are still saving tons off their taxes.

So why not just have a Flat Tax where there are no deductions? Sounds like you'd support that.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Only items bought at the retail level are taxed.

Then what the hell good is that? Define "retail".

Check out the Fair Tax Book for a good explaination.

Either you buy it for me or you explain it yourself.

A VAT is a different animal. It taxes at each level of production. It also doesn't repeal the income tax or have a prebate for the taxes required up to the poverty level.

translation... businesses don't have to pay the "fair tax".

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

I'm assuming that 99% of 'the rich' would not want to share a cell with Wesley Snipes or Randy Quaid so they follow the law when paying taxes. I'm sure we could find years where recognized losses or deferred income influence the numbers and we can throw those percentages out as proof 'the rich', as a group, don't pay their taxes.

If the progressive tax structure and legal rules for deductions mean that person X pays less than the highest possible amount, I don't think that is a crime against society. If any of us claim deductions then we don't pay the highest percentage possible either. I know plenty of people that time donations or visits to goodwill etc to make sure they are done before year end...I don't think they are screwing me or the country.

If it is legal, then it is legal.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

This is a perfect example of the difference between "equal," "fair," and "just." :p

Yeah, why is it whenever anyone complains about loopholes, people always respond with "then you must support the Fairtax or flat tax!"

Why do we have to go the extra step and change the entire dynamic of the current system instead of just maintaining the current graduated system without the loopholes?

"I don't like part A of X!"
"Then you must support Y since it doesn't have A!"
"No, I want to keep X, just without part A."

Eh... i think its one part purity and one part "kill it to save it" (see healthcare).

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

I had a really snarky reply all typed out but I just can't bring myself to post it. After re-reading all your posts concerning this, I've come to the conclusion that you're not trying to be obstinate, you just simply don't understand this stuff. I'm sorry.

I long for the days of Bobo, he was the king of snarky

Changing the subject a bit, but Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack just got thrown under the bus by the White House over the Shirley Sherrod "incident".

the whole thing is interesting because she got sacked within a span of less than 8 hours yesterday from head to tail.

I have to wonder if the White House is panicking or something. Either that or they are so owing to the "tea party is racist" meme that they can't take the distraction from letting any other issues extend out.

Still, many possibilities... gone in the span of a work day. Gone in a matter of hours. I really think they're spooked.

edit: one possibility is that they just plain clean sacked her in advance of a massive conflict of interest... she represented a group suing the USDA obtaining a million$ (billion$?) settlement immediately before she became part of the USDA. This would be something that would come out in the aftermath/controversy that otherwise we would never know/follow up.

Lets note that she works at the pleasure of the president, an appointee.

Crazy rush to judgment by Vilsack I guess. Clearly makes him a racist.

Also in the backtrack department, the White House announced they will send Berwick's nomination to the Senate after all. Didn't see that coming at all.

Who ever thought that, of all government agencies, the USDA could be at the center of such a political cluster-eff. ???

It manages some of the country's largest welfare programs, and is a bureaucratic nightmare. So the fact some political hack would pull the trigger on this woman, based solely on news clips, doesn't really surprise me.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

We have another new term for illegal aliens, courtesy of the USDA (specifically the Forest Service). It seems that an illegal alien from Mexico was caught raising marijuana in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in California and the Forest Service press release referred to him as a "displaced foreign traveler".

Yeah, once he is booted back across the border!
