Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

I usually try to avoid the political threads, but I'm looking for some insight into some "jump to conclusion" rants a couple of people I know of are on lately.

How is Obama directly responsible for the Transocean Oil Rig? Why is it his fault that sh*t goes wrong in international waters to a multi-billion dollar European corporation renting the rig?

I don't see how propping the president (any of 'em, even Millard Fillmore) up on a soap box and grandstanding to these issues gets anything done. It's all just the equivalent of a blow job for your ear. Nothing is going to be magically fixed by focusing some cameras on Obama and making him read off of the cue cards.

Am I missing something?
(Other than the obvious "I'm not cynical enough of our government to participate in such discussions." :o :D )

The only thing Obama is irresponsible for is shrugging it off for several weeks and then, and only then, do very little about it other than grumbling a few words in the press. Now he's going to act like a big man or something I guess.... little too late for that. He had a long time to put together things to find solutions or at least have some advisory stuff put together... but that's not what Obama wants. In a year or two that's all gone and the situation is forgotten. What he wants is permanent structural change... that's what "cap and trade" or whatever farce of a name you give it will do... he wants permanent structural change to this nation. edit: this is the gist of "never let a crisis go to waste"... most crises blow over eventually... but in the mean time the public may be more willing to go along with what you wanted all along. After all, you know you're right, so there is no sin in deluding the public.

That's why you ignore a situation for several weeks and then do some silly photo-ops and weird statements like he's done.

Dunno. I think we have to look at the ends, not the means.

Patmans examples of cap and trade and healthcare...are means to improve the society by addressing addressing challenges to the environment and the welfare of Americans via health. Eisenhower's quote shows concern about the US getting addicted to a military which then results in driving a self perpetual war which is either rhetoric or real. The results in the former is an investment in lives and welfare of the earth...the latter is wasting money to perpetuate worldwide fear, potentially resulting in death.

You may disagree with the value of the tactics to achieve these goals...but if one can't even get the goals right, its counterproductive to even join the conversation.

You ignored what Ike said there... yes, you did. Everybody focuses on the first part... you ignore the second part... I'm amazed you did so so very blatantly.

Cap & Trade and Universal Health Care are a victory of a scientific niche which implies that you can do great things through the "scientific" knowledge we have. Both are colossally ignorant of reality... but since when does reality matter when you are ready to be righteous.

The thing is we've seen over and over again the issues of the military... and we're aware of them... but we're deluding ourselves if in our rush to perfect ourselves that we aren't missing something through our own arrogance. The arrogance that presumes that you can deliver great health care to all (you can't) and that you can diminish carbon without decimating an economy (you can't)... both have been sold by "scientists" as dogmatically possible and necessary.

Not sure what more he could have done given the utter lack of scientific resolve of the matter at hand, Pat. It's not as if there's been a shortage of cooks in the kitchen - with or without his jumping into the fray publicly sooner.

We have a surplus. We must cut the top marginal rate!

Wait, what, it's a deficit? We must cut the top marginal rate!

He could've had Albert Gore Jr. head up a blue chip panel to recommend actions. Wait, Albert had other holes to plug.

Actually, I'm sure certain of the followers are more disappointed he hasn't weaned the US from fossil fuels by today, so we can all have windmills in our yards and solar panels on the roof, and we can all drive around in Duracells on wheels. Sarah would just advocate more drilling so the oil spill would drain into the "little holey things".

Edit:

And in other news, we finally know what became of PhilDupree. ;)

I'm not sure who is more pathetic: the people who thought Obama would magically make everything perfect or the idiots who think this is somehow all his fault.

I hope there's an easy solution to this debacle in the Gulf, but I fear that doesn't exist.

Considering the former is only the projected fantasy of the latter, I'm sure... :p

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

A lot of liberals have never been in love with his administration. It's why all the Lefty/Socialist/Communist tags don't really apply. If they did, people on the left would love him. It's more a testament to how far right the country has gone, at least politically.

Yeah, he's really pretty passive, for a supposed progressive. It was still sorta surprising to see the MSNBC crew, including Chris Matthews, the leg tingle guy, turn on him after the Big Oval Office Address the other day.
I think the more extreme labels being thrown around are more preemptive/scare tactics than based on what he's actually done. And it might work -would we be looking at a single payer system today if the opposition didn't seem quite as committed (insane) as they do? And it might work for cap&trade.

hahahaha, ok, so I read that as, "He's really pretty." :D

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Maybe MSNBC figures they'll get better ratings with a Republican Congress to attack all day?

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Watching a bit of BP testimony. Just not a productive process. A verbal pound a flesh is about it.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

****!!! I can't believe I missed Rise of the New Right on MSNBC with Chris Matthews last night.

It's here. Of course, what they've actually got their panties in a twist over, is that he's not far left enough. No danger of MSNBC voicing reason with these guys on the air.:p

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Nice to see that there are still people out there ready to literally apologize to BP.

Somebody needs to check this guy's campaign account and see how deep he's into the oil industry's pocket.

As Rep. Barton stands up for BP, it's important to note that he's received $1.4 million in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry during his time in Congress. In fact, it's his highest-giving industry. More specifically, Rep. Barton has received $27,000 in campaign contributions from BP, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

There's no linkage there...
