I know it is perilous to take these posts seriously, but...

Cap and Trade you have a case -- that's pointy-headed and pretty radical, and counter-intuitive.

ObamaCare is just another social insurance program. Eisenhower's quote is the wrong hammer to use on it. You're looking for Hayak's shtick for that.

Dunno. I think we have to look at the ends, not the means.

Patmans examples of cap and trade and healthcare...are means to improve the society by addressing addressing challenges to the environment and the welfare of Americans via health. Eisenhower's quote shows concern about the US getting addicted to a military which then results in driving a self perpetual war which is either rhetoric or real. The results in the former is an investment in lives and welfare of the earth...the latter is wasting money to perpetuate worldwide fear, potentially resulting in death.

You may disagree with the value of the tactics to achieve these goals...but if one can't even get the goals right, its counterproductive to even join the conversation.

I agree.

We all know what happened when George HW Bush signed the 1990 Clean Air act into law. Economic growth tanked in the following decade as U.S. industries were flummoxed by the act's cap and trade provisions.

I agree with Spitzer, pretty much completely. Not sure about the Carbon Tax but I like it better than Cap and Trade.

I usually try to avoid the political threads, but I'm looking for some insight into some "jump to conclusion" rants a couple of people I know of are on lately.

How is Obama directly responsible for the Transocean Oil Rig? Why is it his fault that sh*t goes wrong in international waters to a multi-billion dollar European corporation renting the rig?

I don't see how propping the president (any of 'em, even Millard Fillmore) up on a soap box and grandstanding to these issues gets anything done. It's all just the equivalent of a blow job for your ear. Nothing is going to be magically fixed by focusing some cameras on Obama and making him read off of the cue cards.

Am I missing something?
(Other than the obvious "I'm not cynical enough of our government to participate in such discussions." :o :D )

Obama is responsible because his party worked for decades to gut safety standards and environmental laws, and he stood up there at his convention yelling drill baby drill like a moron.

I can't believe your memory is so short.

Obama's inability to swim to the bottom of the ocean with a giant cork is awful. Sarah Palin can't do that either, but she can see the oil spill from her house.

Actually, I'm sure certain of the followers are more disappointed he hasn't weaned the US from fossil fuels by today, so we can all have windmills in our yards and solar panels on the roof, and we can all drive around in Duracells on wheels. :mad: Sarah would just advocate more drilling so the oil spill would drain into the "little holey things". :confused:

So if you're counting, the ratio of awkwardly embarrassing sex scandals involving Republicans and Democrats has now fallen to only about 5:1. In the hypocrisy ratio, OTOH, the GOP still holds a (Biblically) commanding lead :p
