Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

This is why you can't argue with rufus. He keeps changing what happened in the past. If the GOP hadn't run a total moron in that race, Lamont would have won handily.

and to the end, Lieberman is still functionally a Democrat and in general he still believes in the usage of the state to help out the nation in accordance with his beliefs.

The general issue is that the Dems run towards the totality of an issue accepting comprimise and "moderate"ness on their terms... note that you don't usually see a "moderate" jag to the right unless its law enforcement. Those who vote as conservatives/republicans are getting to the point where they feel they need to take on this totality. I think the Tea Parties are as much a reaction to this totality and fear of that totality as much as it is a reaction to the idea that we're going to have to pay for all these debts in the end. We can't sustain this "vision" and the people are afraid that they can't stop it.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Party behavior is a function of the diversity of interests in the party. A relatively homogeneous party like the current GOP is a well-oiled machine given to lock-step voting, at the risk of sporadic purity purges like the Tea Party, and radicalism caused by too tight a focus. A relatively heterogeneous party like the current Dems is a loose jumble of competing interests given to temporary coalitions, at the risk of backbiting and envious competition over party resources, and platform incoherence caused by no focus at all.

There's nothing particularly left or right about either configuration, although rightest coalitions probably tend to be less diverse for sociological reasons and so tend towards the former model.

I see his point I suppose, but still who is Obama kidding?
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hcoyG-Ck3-VwZB7fqpUFXbffoObg

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said.

Really Mr. President? You don't know how to work an iPod?

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Right, but then why give interviews like this:
http://rap.about.com/b/2007/06/29/barack-obama-i-have-some-jay-z-on-my-ipod.htm

I know it's a little thing (politicians bend the truth, I'm shocked   ).

Just think it's funny how the guy who campaigned on being young and hip and new gets into office and becomes ancient.

Young and hip, for the 1980's ;) It isnt like Barack is 25 I mean he is still a parent and as we all know, parents just dont understand :p

Plus compared to McCain ANYONE is hip and young ;)

one thing, well, the only thing actually, that I like about Apple is that their products are head-smackingly simple.

more to the point is they ran on their understanding of tech and they also mandated that the president have his own secured blackberry.

If he doesn't know how to use an ipod then how does he use a blackberry? If he doesn't know how to use his own blackberry then who uses it?

edit: i'm not surprised that the president doesn't know how to use tech... when you are politicking 24-7 for the last decade then these things are decidedly "off the radar"... but remember that it was spun that Obama had a better understanding of these types of things and it was claimed that gave him an edge.... of course as long as the people who need to be competent are then it doesn't particularly matter.

people are ****ed off. any incumbent is should be worried.

We'll see. Obama's still got a 48.3 approve vs 44.7 disapprove (RCP average). And the only thing that looks like it might derail an otherwise smooth American recovery is problems in SE Europe.

Until the debt collector comes visiting this country and then people are going to be real upset as the entitlements disappear. I would not want to be a politician when this happens.

If you want to see what it will be like, look at greece right now.

Yeah, but how many years from now is the debt collector finally going to get around to us?

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

I think the most common reaction would be: "There's a country called Greece?"

Silly. Of course people know Greece. That's where salad dressing comes from! And the Olympics used to be there.

I'm 54. I think it will be in my lifetime, especially if the prolifigate spending continues.

Others will say just raise taxes, but if you raise income taxes, then then underground economy will continue to grow. Bill, myself, and others seem to agree that a fair tax as a replacement for the income tax will destroy the underground economy (which is a good thing).

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

the last estimate I've heard is 2013!!

but the United States economy is no Greece, thank god!

the "advantage" is that the US can print its own money... though I agree with you... its going to occur sooner than people think... in a terrible way it'll be the epitaph for the boomers... especially as it would lead to an earlier death for them as services (like keeping them alive) recede due to the crisis. In the end their children won't want to take them in because they can't afford them and they have been taught to think only of the immediate now... so it'll become like Japan is today with the elderly. In a horrible way, it'll be fitting.

edit: I find it funny that Greece's "austerity" measures still mean their running a defecit... how is that a solution? The logic on savings and spending doesn't change just because you happen to be a nation... especially if you don't control your own currency.

edit #2: how does the "fair tax" eliminate the "underground economy"... somebody's going to come in and magically tax the black market? Or is it that the government will have such a vested interest on making sure you paid taxes when you paid your baby sitter? What gets taxed? What doesn't?
