Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Developing story to watch today, it could be Senator Bob Bennett's (R-Utah) last hurrah. Today the Utah GOP meets to select it's candidate for the fall election, if a candidate gets over 60% of the vote, no primary, and he's on the ballot for fall. If no one gets 60% of the vote, the top two compete in a primary in June.

And ooo boy is Bobby Bennett in trouble. Current projections have him sitting 3rd in the race for delegates. Despite his 18 years of service, people feel he's not conservative enough.

As a dutiful SCSU fan I fully support Mike Lee for Senate in Utah. :D

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Another interesting story to watch in the next couple of weeks is in Hawaii's 1st Congressional District (Honolulu and surrounding areas). There's a special election to fill the seat vacated by Neil Abercrombie, who is running for governor. It should be an easy Democratic hold, except for the quirky rules that govern special elections in Hawaii.
No primaries, so it's a simple runoff between all the candidates. The GOP selected theirs, who in an ordinary year could probably be expected to get 35% of the vote or so, and finish well back. But the Democratic Party, in their infinite wisdom, couldn't pick a candidate to run, so they've got two in the race. This means that the GOP could actually pick up a seat in Hawaii, which would be hilarious.
Now of course, the seat will revert back to a Democratic one in the fall most likely as the Dems get it together, but still would be a nice story for a week or two.

I don't know much about Bob Bennett expect that Utah Republicans tend to be a conservative lot. What I will say is that I do wonder about the wisdom of taking down incumbents in the primaries for reasons that don't seem to be all that apparent. Experience does count for something after all.

We're seeing this Florida obviously where I think Crist's sin was being nice to Obama, and also in Arizona even with McCain. I can understand a challenge if the incumbent is nuts (Bob Smith replaced by Sununu in NH) or doomed due to scandal (Dodd-Blumenthal in CT). Some of these though just seem stupid.

I kind of agree with you, I think it needs to be on a case by case basis. In the case of Utah though, what does the GOP have to lose? Most conservative state in the union, why not try to get a really conservative senator? If this move fails, you send Bennett back to the Senate, and not much changes.

Leave it to Rover to be a huge fan of the establishment. What a monumental surprise.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

3rd round:
Bridgewater 57%
Lee 42%

So it'll be a primary then. Bennett making noise about a write-in campaign, that'd be a lot of effort though.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

The only good incumbent is one that's looking for a job come the second week in November

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

He's gone!

Bridgewater with 37%, Lee with 36%.If one of them can get to 60% today, they can avoid a primary.

More proof that John Cornyn needs to resign as head of the NRSC in my opinion.

Have we gotten to the point where we're seriously ruminating on the Utah GOP's nominating convention? I mean, the incumbent take down is funny... but still.

It's like pouring over spring training box scores and yes, we passed that point long ago.

Think of the Cafe as a shadow cabinet. It's just very, very shadowy. :p

Eh, maybe it's a little over the top, but I do think it's indicative of a few things. First, that the anti-incumbent sentiment runs really deep. Second, some of the quotes from Bennett were pretty enlightening, all along of the lines of "But my friends in Washington think I'm conservative!!!"

Funny how things sometimes get taken to task when trust is removed from the equation.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

In this environment, a lot of incumbents will face serious challenges in their primaries. The only group with lower favorability than Democratic members is Republican members. It makes sense to try to winnow out wobbly incumbents prior to the general, to give the party a shot at retaining the seat with a fresh face.

I would expect a bunch of first term Dem Congressmen from the class of '08 to get primaried out. Republicans should be safer, but the Tea Party might throw a wrench in the works.

But I thought it was uncivil and low class to run someone against an incumbent in the primary. I mean, that's his deserved seat, you can't take that away from him. Fine if he loses his seat to an opponent in the general election, but you can't primary him, that's just not done.

I mean, that's what the Repubs told us regarding Joe Lieberman. Funny how their rhetoric keeps shifting depending on the circumstance.

I remember nothing of the kind... I remember it being "why the hell are they fragging a very loyal Democrat over some military stances"

I stand by the 80/20 rule. Anybody who sides with the Dems over 80% of the time will be considered a Democrat... anybody who violates this is a problem and must be dealt with. Anybody who sides with the Republicans over 20% of the time is a republican... isn't bi-partisanship wonderful?

This is why you can't argue with rufus. He keeps changing what happened in the past. If the GOP hadn't run a total moron in that race, Lamont would have won handily.
