I'm not saying I like the politics, just the city itself.

Besides, the GOP's trying to kick me out anyway for having too high an education. Alas, until there's a non-extremist libertarian party or a viable fiscal conservative party, the GOP's stuck with me.

The GOP's giving the Libertarians a run for the extremist trophy. It's a question of what you believe is a bigger threat to the Republic: evolutionary theory or fiat money.

I'd call it the Midwestern Philadelphia, but I agree it's a great city to visit.

Agreed - but then again, there's Chicago, then there's Chicago. Downtown is amazing. Greatest architecture in the world, clean and the best grub in the nation. Travel a few blocks and it's Detroit-esque. As trashy as it gets.

Well, Chicago is both much larger than Philly and commands a much larger hinterland. Chicago's regional pull and primacy in the Midwest is akin to New York's on the eastern seaboard.

Well, that's an incomplete reading of the situation. Sure, travel a few blocks - but in which direction? Sure, there are areas of the city that are as depressed as some Detroit neighborhoods, but the city overall is a healthy and vibrant place.

So Chicago was out first, then Tokyo. Can't say I expected Chicago to be first out, but the IOC and its voting process is rather unpredictable.

I can see a situation where there was an Asian bloc, a Euro bloc, and a western hemisphere bloc, with Rio grabbing the lion's share from Chicago.

Another argument for IRV! :mad: :mad: ;)

Considering both Chicago and New York have been shot down in the past two votes, LA had one and Atlanta was a longshot, and the USOC has no intention of bidding on 2020, I'd guess it'll be a couple decades before the games end up here again.

All IOC members vote, except for those with ties to a bidding country. Hence, the US members do not vote. However, if a country is eliminated, those members can then vote in later rounds. Voting continues until one country wins a majority of votes - if one does not, then the lowest vote getter is eliminated, and they move to another round of voting.

The Beautiful People vote. Maybe they said to Chicago that they won't be screwed again.

It's Rio's to lose. I just can't see them giving it to Europe that many times in a row.
