Now. Who is coming to East Lansing

Re: Now. Who is coming to East Lansing

When do we find out?

I'm going to be a smarty-pants and say April 5 (a Tuesday). OK we'll officially find out then. Rampant speculation will swirl around that guy a couple days before.

OK Owsla, any idea who the leading candidate(s) is (are)? I read somewhere that the top three are Cole, Gwoz and Miller. Any chance the Hollis is still talking to others, or has this become the final group? If it's Gwoz nothing will happen until the end of DU's season, Miller isn't coaching so it could happen today, and of course I don't know if someone coaching the National group would wait until they're done or not..

Who are you pulling for? (everyone respond) Gwoz obviously would be a great grab....

Re: Now. Who is coming to East Lansing

I have no idea. The Athletic Department is doing an exceptional job keeping the info. tight.
The guy I want - I don't think they can get in time to prevent a setback in the recruiting cycle. His full name starts and ends with the same letter.

Don't think that Miller is actually a serious or viable candidate. Maybe he gets a mention, maybe he even talks to Hollis, but his coaching D-I hockey resume comes way short of actually meriting serious consideration.

Re: Now. Who is coming to East Lansing

The RCMB board says that Hollis is set to announce the new coach next week. Anybody confirm (or deny) that a statement has come out from Hollis' office to that effect?

Re: Now. Who is coming to East Lansing

It was on Lisa Byington's Twitter, so it's probably legit.

I find the timing of both the Hollis-related news and the BTHC-related news to be peculiar. Perhaps I'm the only one.

Well if this is legitimate, I'm pretty sure we can rule out someone.

One of the papers reports that Mason has had quite a bit of contact with Hollis on this decision. He also picked Comley to replace him, so should he have that much say?

You mean the guy he picked that won one of three NCAA championships in school history?

Don't you mean THREE?

1966 - Michigan State 6 Clarkson 1 (Amo Bessone)
1986 - Michigan State 6 Harvard 5 (Ron Mason)
2007 - Michigan State 3 Boston College 1 (Rick Comley)

While I respect Ron Mason as one of the finest coaches in college hockey history, I sincerely hope he has little impact on the decision. In the nearly 10 years since Coach Mason retired, many things about the game have changed - the kids have changed too! Michigan State needs someone young, someone who has been a successful assistant somewhere, someone like a Jeff Blashill who could come in and tell his team that while he understands there is an MSU tradition, new traditions have to be made. Someone who can get more out of his players than they thought they had, someone who can tell his players there are no expectations other than to work hard and let the rest take care of itself. Guys coming out of Miami seem to do well - what about the one behind the bench for them last night? Assuming he was a senior in 1994 - when he was the team captain - he's all of 40. MSU needs someone like that, who doesn't have to have any ties to the university - they need someone who can come in and who can convey to his players that they have what it takes to return the program to where it has been and could be again.

OK, rant over ...

Arwen, exactly what I wanted to have someone say. You know, sometimes when someone is successful at something, they don't really know why. To ask someone to pick their replacement, they may not really see the traits that made them winners but they "think" they do so they pick someone that isn't the right fit. A CEO shouldn't necessarily pick their successor any more than a coach should pick his.

Hollis isn't shy about approaching this from every angle, up to and including discussing the possibility with Steve Yzerman.

Re: Now. Who is coming to East Lansing

interesting to note that all three were head coaches at up schools before going to state. Bessone at michigan tech, mason at lake superior state and comley at lssu and northern michigan.

So you're saying they're going to hire Jamie Russell? :D
