Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

The talk on the Q/RIT threads is that Quinnipiac might not jump to Hockey East if invited. What do you think happens should that happen.

UMass is pushing for AIC. They feel lonely out in Western Mass and are tired of finishing in the basement.

I think the league may just stay at 11 teams. I do find it interesting that Holy Cross is going to host games against PC and BC at DCU next season. With professional hockey having left Worcester, there is an opportunity for hockey fans in the city to support that team. Seems like a long shot though.

Trips to Hartford to play Uconn and Worcester to play HC...what could be better? :D

This would be my hope. If they bring in another team we have the situation where every team makes the playoff as happens now. If we stay at 11 there's a shot they'll eliminate the bottom 3 and only the top 8 will make the playoffs. It makes those last few weeks so much better. Now it's which team gets a bye or home ice.... who cares.

If they stay at 11, my guess is top 5 get a bye and first round best of three still in place for the other 6 teams. Not what I want but that's what I think will happen.

You are probably right, that's what they did when ND came into HE and ruined everything. I'd hope Bertagna would realize the error of his ways and make the regular season count again. If we have to have the play ins so every one can get a medal then they may as well add a 12th team.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Really? Granted, my sole interest in ND is football, but I don't think there's any question from every standpoint just involving football -- history, geography, recruiting profile, and program scope (and mission; and health) -- the B1G and ND are an obvious best fit, and the ACC is a really bizarre and artificial expedient in the service of I still don't know what.

Geography-wise, the B1G is better. Culture-wise, the ACC is much better—there are a lot more private institutions in the ACC, and the public schools are less the huge behemoths like OSU, MSU, etc.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Mopping the floor with them? Over the last 5 years? I'll give you the last 2 years, but the 3 before that not so much. You going to hang a banner for besting the Gophers over a 2 year stretch?

And why are you talking about the "talk of other Gopher fans"? Need to move the goal posts to regain footing in this discussion?
Who is moving the goalposts here? I was talking about Wisconsin and you tried to move the focus to the Gophers. I don't have to move the goalposts. The Little Six conference is garbage right now. Wisconsin is garbage right now. You have a vested interest in the B1G teams doing well. I, on the other hand, don't care either way. All I was trying to say when I responded to your post about Wisconsin is that there is no guarantee they are going to get back to their success level of the 2000s. Then you came back and brought up the Gophers for some reason and said "that's not me suggesting they will be a conference head and shoulders above everyone else." I am glad you feel that way now, but I guarantee you that if I was to go back to 2012-14 I could find some posts where you did suggest they will be a conference head and shoulders above everyone else.

Biggest problem the B1G has right now is it is too susceptible to a few teams having bad seasons tanking the conference's Pairwise. Too few teams in the conference. Not to mention between Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin only one has managed to do well at the same time. That won't last.
The team that won your conference was 5-10 in non-conference, so that's not really "a few". At Thanksgiving (the last time I looked), the B1G as a whole was 13-24-9 against schools that aren't in Atlantic Hockey or aren't ASU. That is pretty much "your whole conference sucked this year".

Do I expect Wisconsin to bounce back to 1970's-80's form? Probably not. Far more parity in college hockey these days. But do I expect them to be the dumpster fire they are now? Nope. I see them having every bit as much recruiting success as St Cloud, Duluth, UNO, etc... with an adequate staff. Big Ten needs to get that program up to standards and with the addition of Notre Dame the conference will not be as effected by a bad season by the likes of Ohio State, etc....
Wow, that's a high bar to clear. "Not a dumpster fire".

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Tipsy - You said "I know you are super thirsty" to see the B1G win some OOC games. My reply was that the Gophers have made two Frozen Fours in the last 5 years. In light of that, what would make me "super thirsty" to see the B1G win OOC games? I know that beating the Gophers is banner worthy for you folks, but we don't feel the same.

And I never once denied the B1G was down this year. They have been down the last three seasons. So nice straw man. But using just the last three season's performance as evidence that the B1G will remain down is desperately flawed. It's an extremely small sample size. The B1G schools have done very well the last 10 years.

That occurred to me too. Stay at 11 for now.

Another thing that occurred to me is that Quinnipiac would also have to enlarge their building eventually. I believe they are at only 3,500 although their barn is really nice. I kinda think they like being where they are.

That's a good point. If they ultimately wanted HE I think they would have built a bigger barn initially. On the other hand, I've heard that they have the ability to enlarge the current capacity with an upper level on 3 sides.
