Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

No, suggesting they left because of competition when the conference was their THIRD CHOICE to begin with is "stupid".

So what you are saying is that they wanted to be in the B1G or the Nacho league but instead chose HE because HE was the only league that wanted them? And then due to their stellar 3rd place finish in HE they all of sudden had their pick of leagues and decided to join the B1G because hey, that team puts a ton of teams in the Tourney.

Dude, you should not be using the word stupid in any of your posts.

No one bolts from a conference they really want to be a part of

Who said ND wanted to be a part of HE?

ND didn't want to be a part of HE... they weren't competitive, they couldn't compete for the league title, it was costing a lot of money to travel, their fans bolted the forums because they kept getting their feelings hurt, and Jeff Jackson had to spend more time coming up with excuses then coaching... of course they didn't want to be in HE.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

I'm saying Notre Dame didn't want to join the conference that much to begin with because of travel and rivalries and by all accounts that is why they say they are moving to their first choice of conferences.

It's a stretch, I know

It like going thru the trouble of getting married when you dont really want too and then divorcing in a few years because the person
you really want is now available....that doesnt sound very holy to me. American but not holy.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

I don't think they wanted to be in the Big Ten. Or the Big Ten didn't want them (rather, they were probably still operating under there all or nothing mantra).

Once ND wanted in or the Big Ten dropped that requirement, it was probably just a matter of time.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Hockey East fans are thrilled with this news. It just seems that the concept of even the possibility of Notre Dame taking their ball and going home because they can't seem to win a title here is really ruffling feathers of dimwitted Midwesterners. That's all really.

+1

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Congrats to Notre Dame on winning the 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Big Ten hockey championships.

Shout out to the dullard who left me negative reputation on this and left a lengthy rep comment showing that the joke went seven miles over their head.

Sign your reps, and take a joke.

It's always remarkable to see someone out-arrogance a gopher fan...

I think the biggest reason was travel, but dismissing the lack of success as not having a role would be... well stupid.

No one bolts from a conference they really want to be a part of after only 3 years because they haven't won the conference.

Success is so cyclical in this game (for some moreso than others) that it's particularly stupid to assign lack of success after only 3 years. Especially when 2 of those 3 years featured at large bids to the NCAA tourney. JCarter is, as the great Walter Sobchak would say, out of his element.

By this line of thinking, New Hampshire should consider bolting and Maine should close up shop.

My eyes can't roll enough.

I think it's pretty obvious that ND was only going to choose between the Nacho, the Big and HE. When the dominoes were falling four years ago, HE was the only one willing to bend on differences with the TV contracts. Obviously, the Big Ten had a change of heart.

This thread has given me quite a few unsigned negreps. I even got one for saying it's good that JHU and the Big Ten are teaming up their cancer research centers.

Exactly.

JHU opened the door for affiliate membership, the Big Ten has (seemingly) decided to be ease up on the TV side of things (a perpetual source of disagreement going back to the failed attempt to bring Notre Dame into the fold back in the 90s), the Big Ten is feeling the frustration of their hockey fans after three years of taking them away from their natural rivals, and this is what we get.

The chest thumping from certain HE posters here is quite amusing. If ND wasn't good enough for their conference in their eyes because of (let's face it) one bad season out of three, I shudder to think of what they think of half of the members left in the league. Someone should remind them that they still need 6 schools for an autobid.

Considering that the Hopkins medical school/hospital is possibly the most renowned in the country (and I know the hospital was ranked #1 in the US for about 20-25 years straight), that's particularly silly.

They had talks with the B1G first. Actually, it sounds like those talks never really stopped. The B1G initially was insisting that they join for all sports. They then went to the NCHC, but negotiations got hung up on Notre Dame's NBC TV contract. The NCHC wanted a conference wide contract. Hockey East was willing to let Notre Dame keep it's TV contract.

Honestly, I don't think anyone should feel like they need to save face here. Notre Dame is getting a better travel schedule and more traditional rivals, Hockey East will get more favorable travel and likely a more traditional rival with a new member, and the B1G gets another program (and another competitive one) to help with pairwise implications and an in for perhaps future talks about Notre Dame joining the conference for all sports.

Well said.

Anyone questioning this line of events from The Great Realignment Shuffle is clearly treading in unknown waters and should probably just let the adults speak.

Exactly. The mud was kicked up a few years ago and it's still settling. We're going to see more of this until everyone finds their place.
