Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

For grins, if we follow the "teams in primary conferences band together" logic, it's entirely possible to gain a few conferences out of this:

HE stays as is, mostly. Maybe gains Quinnipiac, maybe not. Whatever.

Ivies break off from ECAC (I know, they'll probably never actually do it and so on and so on, but its at the least perfectly feasible)

RIT and Holy Cross join their Liberty/Patriot brethren in ECAC (other than Army and BU, but you know...).

RMU, SH, Can, Nia, Army, Air Force stick together.

Bentley and AIC either stay in AHA with the other six or all of D-II schools that are still playing D-III schedules* (all of whom are in the NE 10 with Bentley and AIC) go D-I and join up.

* Which... seriously, I don't get the point. They have nothing to play for, since they're ineligible for the D-III tourney. How could it possibly make that much of a difference for them to just play D-I and not offer scholarships? Presumably I'm missing something with those schools.

Not kidding, I can be convinced of how wrong I am by the fans of the Ivies and AHA/NE10 why this will never happen, but from a 10,000 ft view, it doesn't take a whole lot of maneuvering to get to 5 conferences out east.

I agree...the 6 teams in the NE-10 who still play a D2/D3 schedule need to move up or down or fold. My hope is that SNHU will take this chance to move up to the AHA. And if another team leaves the AHA for the ECAC, then maybe Stonehill would be up for a ride to D1 with us. St. A's is looking to move down, rumor is that St. Mike's is as well. Should those two move down that leaves the NE-10 with 4 teams...what the hell are they going to do with that? Time to move!

Maybe I should venture over to the DIII boards and just ask the fans there, because I truly don't get what they're accomplishing in the D-II Forbidden Zone Of Having Nothing To Play For.

Don't want to pay for scholarships? Something tells me that AHA (or even just them by themselves, there's enough of them and they all play other sports together as it is) can oblige that as many of them are in the same boat.

Travel costs? I guess if they struggled to get non-conference games, maybe, but again there are plenty of like-minded schools out east, so I'm not sure how this is a problem.

I don't think you can play up to DI anymore. That ship has sailed.

Notre Dame Statement

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame has accepted sport affiliate membership into the Big Ten Conference for men's ice hockey and will begin Big Ten play with the 2017-18 season.

"While we have enjoyed our affiliation with Hockey East, the opportunity to participate in Big Ten hockey is a compelling one from the perspective of our student-athletes. The move will significantly reduce the time our team spends traveling, increase the broadcast exposure for our program and allow us to take advantage of the natural rivalries that exist with the Big Ten schools that participate in hockey," said Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame vice president and James E. Rohr director of athletics.

Notre Dame will join Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin to form a seven-team hockey conference.

Notre Dame has been a member of the Hockey East Association since the 2013-14 season and will continue to compete in that league for one additional season in 2016-17.

Prior to joining Hockey East, Notre Dame played in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Irish had two stints in the CCHA, first playing from 1981-83 and then again from 1992-93 through the 2012-13 season. During that time, the Irish won both CCHA regular-season and postseason tournament titles in 2007 and 2009 and competed against Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State.

From 1971-72 to 1980-81, the Notre Dame competed alongside Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

Notre Dame played two-game regular-season series against Minnesota and Penn State in 2015-16 and will renew its rivalry with Michigan at 5:30 p.m. EDT Friday (March 25) at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Hockey Championship.

I would be curious to know if there is a work around...since there is no option in D2, shouldn't those schools not be allowed to compete D1? It is any different than the sports that have the NC level...I know SNHU is starting up Women's bowling, and that will be at the NC/D1 level.

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

I know Le Moyne got hurt by this rule. All their sports were D2 except for baseball which was D1 and they had a good D1 program for a small school. But the NCAA knocked all their baseball program to match the rest of their sports in D2 and its really hurt the program

Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10

I'm sure that this has been asked and answered before somewhere else but I am too lazy to look - why is that that Notre Dame doesn't have a women's hockey team?

I thought they chose to move their program back down? Why did the NCAA force them down? Wouldn't the NCAA in that same motive also force down Merrimack/Bentley/AIC etc... to D2?

My thinking is as hockey is not available in the D2 model, I would like to believe there has to be an exception even for current programs to be able to advance their programs. Otherwise, the NE-10 schools should pack up their hockey programs. D2 hockey sucks.

I dont know the whole story I wasnt at the school anymore when they did it. I was told the NCAA told them that they had to have all their programs at the same level. If you can find articles on it im sure theres a clear cut reason as to why it happened.

Interesting...I will have to look more into that. I did see Le Moyne about 4 years ago at SNHU in the NCAA East Regional. Close game, SNHU came out on top and advanced to the CWS.

I just posted a link. basically no conference would take them as a D1 baseball school and all other sports as D2. They were ousted from the MAAC.
