Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Since I started playing hockey, I have learned better how to live in the moment and not freak (as much) about the future. I don't care about players who are not wearing an ND jersey. I care about the 26 guys who wear the jersey now.

And speaking of those players, TJ Tynan finally has a killer game this season (up to now he has been virtually invisible) and we give away the victory to a less-than-stellar MC team. A bad tie is better than a bad loss, but that shortie was friggin' awesome! His backchecking wasn't too shabby either.

Ironically, Stephen Johns finally had a less-than-perfect game (including taking a bad penalty) last night. I'm so glad that appears to be an anomaly.

So we are down a Fogarty, a DiPauli, a Hinostroza, a Voran, and a Johnson. I hope we can weather the player-injury storm for the next few weeks. We need to steal a win somewhere to make up for last night.

True, but you don't want to start losing those recruits to BC. Of course there could have been issues, i.e. maybe he really wanted to start playing next season, but trust me that's going to sting if it happens again.

That was a game they should have had, but the play in the 3rd period was honestly not good enough to win. The power play entry was pitiful. Showed how much Hinostroza means to this team already imo.

The coaching staff seems to be interested in size and has in the past wanted players to spend an extra season in the USHL (like many other NCAA programs I would imagine). TJ Tynan would have spent another season there had Kyle Palmieri not played taser roulette. And one of the senior defensemen (Kevin Lind?) was ticketed for another season in the USHL because Tinordi was seen as more ready to play in the NCAA and size was likely a factor there too. As long as we continue to recruit high level kids that the other NCAA powers are looking at and the staff wants to combine size with speed, we're probably going to continue lose the occasional recruit. But I concur completely with JJfP. I only care about the guys here, not who is coming, who is leaving or who never makes it. In fact trading Tynan for Palmieri got this team to the 2011 FF. I doubt very much we'd have made it otherwise.

Hinostroza is missed for sure, but the PP struggles go beyond who was available and on the ice. While fatigue was cited, the team managed to both spend the majority of the play in the Merrimack zone, and won 15 of the 23 of the 23 faceoffs, not bad for a tired team that has only won 50% of their draws on the season so far. Despite a steady uptick in the raw skill level of his recruits, Jackson's team here have continued to be pretty pedestrian on the PP. Only his 2008-2009 team really excelled (23%, leading the NCAA). The 2008 NCAA runner-up team was woeful on the PP, scoring under 15% of the time, and in the second half of the season it was much worse than that even. Fortunately bad fundamentals on the PP is a plague visited on many NCAA teams, and by years end only a handful will be higher than 20%. And our PK is the great equalizer anyway, leading the NCAA right now. That said, they simply gotta take more than the zero shots on net they had over the 5+ minutes of 5-4 or 4-4 hockey in the third Saturday night. That wasn't just ugly, it was Fugly...

Dude, the Irish twitter guys tweeted about Hinostroza this week. Info in web stories and injuries were talked about on the radio. Coach Jackson discussed injuries in pre game and was talked about again during the game. Not sure how you missed all of these?

Dude, I know all about WHO is out. My question is why do we never have any real idea about HOW LONG anyone is out. Jackson's ability to maintain radio silence when it comes to injuries is legendary. Our players are simply out and when we see them suit up for a skate-around, then we know they are playing. I also understand not revealing the nature of any particular injury. Again, were this team covered with the intensity and interest of other teams, we'd have a better idea on the injury front. If I missed a "tweet" that said Johnson is expected to miss 10 weeks, or Voran will be available for the Shillelagh tournament, please feel free to post a link for those of us who are challenged to understand modern media.

Asking a guy like Tynan to spend another year in the USHL makes sense. Guys who need to put some bulk on their frame to be competitive in college is one thing. We're talking about a recruit already playing collegiate competition who just got an "A" rating in the CSS preliminary (one of only 3 playing in US), so I doubt that was the actual sticking point. I agree though, that if other players can't wait it out then they don't fit the style Jackson and Co want.

What a frustrating loss. How can a team with this much firepower (regardless of who is out of the lineup) not manage one goal? And I gotta pin the goal against on our captain's shoulders. Not a good move to take a penalty behind the play while you are killing a penalty. Man, I can't wait til the team is healthy again...

I just watched the replay. He crossed checked the Lowell player who was playing the point into the Irish bench. Irish backup goalie Katunar must have been cut by the Lowell players skate as he went right to the locker room with the trainer with a towel wrapped around his hand. Hopefully he's ok.

If you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything at all. So here's what I have to say about tonight's reffing crew:

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

As a neutral observer with no bias towards either team the goalie interference was questionable because there was contact from UML D. The bench minor should not have been called. Tempers flare in tight games.

UML is the better team right now, no questions asked.

The call with two minutes to go wasn't necessary. Yeah, Rust crossed checked the defenseman into the net, but if they had let it go I wouldn't have blamed them (most people didn't see it because it was away from the puck, I have the game DVR'd so I went back to see the replay). They had been letting them play for the previous 10 minutes, so I don't like the whistle there. The hook along the boards two minutes prior on ND was more of a penalty than the interference at the end, but they let that go.

The goalie interference was legit. The call wasn't that he simply made contact, he got his stick inside Hellebuyck's body and hooked him out of the net by his blocker as he went by, preventing him from even turning toward the puck. The defender did make contact, but the ND forward had his stick all up in the goalie's business. That's a call every time. If he had just brushed past him and made contact I don't think they call it, but the ref was right there. Again, something people wouldn't have seen unless they watched the replays.

The bench minor was on Jackson, He talked about it during the first intermission. I guess the ref wasn't coming over to talk to him so he yelled louder and was called for it and said that goal was on him. He didn't say what he said, but I'm sure it wasn't just the volume the ref had a problem with.

Since your such a big fan..you maybe should listen to JJ's pre game interviews on the radio. You might learn something. The guy on the radio Saturday said he could see DiPauli and Johnson back very soon...maybe this weekend. The others were considered more long term. Sorry this is no link for things said during games on the radio of the team you "root" for.

I haven't seen much Jackson in person, but I haven't seen him get angry yet. To the long-time fans, how often does he do this? I've been a little peeved at watching him stand by and take stuff last year, especially after watching so much Jack Parker who never calmed down.

As the Lake State coach he never seemed to have a meteoric personality (of course look who he followed) but at Notre Dame he's been a little more willing to get in the face of an official when his read on the situation said it was warranted.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

How's the attendance usually at the Shillelagh Tourney? Seems kinda silly to have Saturday's game overlap with football (again).

This is the first time Notre Dame is hosting this thing at home. When it was held in Florida and at the Sears Centre in suburban Chicago the crowds were, well they weren't crowds at all actually. Notre Dame would spin it by saying the attendance was "modest." In reality it sucked. Last year though the games against North Dakota over the Thanksgiving break were sellouts or close to it.
