Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

I chuckled at the notion that HE is more physical, but maybe that's because my perspective is that of a fan of the SMT's.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

So...HE refs... Believe it or not, I don't have much of a complaint for a few reasons. I didn't see any call that wasn't a penalty; however, a few of the calls that were majors, I would have called minors. And the refs always call it tight in October. It's like the adage for teachers: never smile until Thanksgiving. It sets the tone.

Okay, maybe I'm forgiving because my own play in my game after Notre Dame's SUCKED. I was on the ice for 3 of the 4 goals the other team scored. I was in the penalty box for the 4th. But we won in spite of me. It's nice that I don't have to really say that about any ND player.

Looking at the play of specific ND players, that did not suck. Vince Hinostroza continues to...what's the word? Astound. Holy crap can he move. And score. Who else comes to mind? Stephen Johns. There is something different about him this season. I like how he came to the defense of Mike Voran. In fact, I like how many of the players came to the defense of many their teammates this weekend. And that first goal by Sam Herr...niiice. In fact, all of the team stats are quite impressive.

If this is a dream, I hope the alarm doesn't go off til April.

Something else to be encouraged by is the newfound stranglehold on home ice the Irish have exhibited. 10 wins in a row at the CFIA. It's been noted here by a number of people how lackluster and up-and-down the play on home ice had been for much of the first two years at the Compton. But they closed out last season with 7 straight wins and opened up this one with 3 in three games. Let's keep that up.

Wow. There's somethin' you don't see...ever. In my nearly 40 years of following hockey, I have never seen a goalie thrown out of a game. And I remember Billy Smith. I cannot wait for the calendar to turn to November and the refs calm down a bit.

I like that so far, 5 players are registering a point/game +. I like that so far ND is registering nearly 2 PPG's/game. I like that so far, ND has not trailed. I like that so far ND is undefeated.

Now for what I don't like. I don't like that Thomas DiPauli, Bryan Rust and Mike Voran have only 5 points among them. While I'm glad that Chad Katunar did his job in his baptism-by-fire, I don't like that he moves around way too much. I swear that's why Steven Summerhays is better thus far. He conserves his energy. I also don't like how for the last 14 minutes, ND basically was hanging on by a thread. The 3rd period is supposed to be theirs and tonight it was UMD's.

But in the end, I am very happy with the W and would be even giddier with another W tomorrow.

Hello from beautiful downtown Killaloe, Co.Clare, where the weather is just as odd here as it is at home. Blue skies and limited rain. In my nearly 25 years of coming here multiple times a year, that's something you don't see.....ever. Well, almost never. It was raining in Cobh the other day when we were there, and one of our umbrellas is now gracing the bottom of the harbor, thankfully its owner decided playing Mary Poppins was not a good way to start the tour. And in another first, Ian forgot an entire set of lyrics, and Norm, Brent, Steve and I could not help him as we forgot them as well. Thank heavens we print lyrics on liner notes. And we even managed to sell that opened CD--though it now comes graced with the words admitting we'd all forgotten the lyrics along with the autographs.

Anyway, I too cannot recall ever seeing a goalie thrown out of a game, which now begs the question what the bloody h**l happened! Can someone fill me in.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Summerhays was doing his best impression of himself. He got hot under the collar and took exception to some contact, grabbed the mask of the UMD player and got himself sole use of the showers. I like that he is aggressive, but he has to pick his spots. I maintain that if the cross-check had been called on Andy Ryan, none of this would have happened. So, I guess, in a way, it's the ref's fault for his reaction to the play after that. :p;)

ND is first in the RPI, but in the end, who cares when that ranking is prior to Halloween. After Valentine's Day would mean a lot more.

Let's go Irish.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Undefeated. Never trailing. High ranking and tops in the RPI.

Somehow I find it hard to believe that as strong in net as Steven Summerhays has been so far that it was planned all along to start Chad Katunar. That sounds like a CYA kinda thing. On the other hand, if Coach Jackson was sitting Summerhays because of the penalty (something he has done), then his integrity comes into question for going back on his word and replacing Katunar after ND went down by 3 and all hope was virtually lost. Either way, I question his decision-making. I don't like messing with a good thing, and Summerhays is a good thing. That MSU weekend is still all-too-fresh in my mind when Summerhays played his arse off and the next night, with nearly everything post-season on the line, Mike Johnson was in net. The team plays differently when Summerhays is not in net. And often that "differently" means yucky.

I look at this program as the t.v. show "How I Met Your Mother." Just have Ted meet her already! There are so many teasers with this team. Just do it already!

I didn't realize that before this weekend...that makes me feel good about last nights dominating win. ND has another quality team and I expect them to go far in the post season this year.

Here's a link to the fracas on Friday night. Very rare for a goalie to be kicked out of a game.

Yes they do.

We'll see about that come March.

Conflicting reports about this between media in South Bend and that in Duluth. I believe his quotes locally were that he planned all along to start Katunar, yet he told Duluth media that while it wasn't the sole consideration, not starting Summerhays was disciplinary in nature. I think Summerhays temper got him a spot on the bench to start Saturday, but Jackson saw things quickly go south on Katunar and a very embarrassing and confidence sapping final score prompted the change of plans. I would not have been surprised to see UMD score 9 or 10 goals had he played the whole game. However sure he was in his game after the third period Friday, Katunar looked like that was all gone in the space of 3:25 and 5 shots Saturday.

Jackson seems to have had an odd relationship with his goalies dating to his first year here and how he dealt with Jordan Pearce and David Brown. When it works, the results have been spectacular. When it hasn't the results have been beyond disappointing.

My guess is Katunar has seen his last start for a while. Jackson may look to start him against what will likely be a struggling Alabama-Huntsville team in January is my best guess. IMO he doesn't look quite ready for NCAA hockey. He's got potential, and he certainly has size -- something that has become the rage in hockey at every position -- but his game looks quite unpolished.

At any rate the start through 6 games could barely have gone better. UMD should be an NCAA team come March I think, and splitting up there is a good result. Hopefully a couple of dinged up players from the weekend won't be dinged up for long, but we won't know how bad those injuries might be until someone misses a few games and someone in the local media gets around to asking the right questions. Hopefully at least one of them heeds the request from the denizens of the internet message boards.

Gosh I hope so. I personally doubt it but I believe this team will make it interesting. It will be a better season than last.

Welcome to Hockey East. It's not easy

Amen my friend. Much tougher conference. Welcome and good luck the rest of the way! (Hope Vermont can squeeze out at least another point tomorrow night ;-) )

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Three sayings are springing to mind tonight:

1. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?
2. $h!t or get off the pot.
3. Beware the fury of a patient man.

Maybe that last one should be "Beware the fury of a patient fan..."

Maybe that 2nd one should be "Shoot or get off the pot..."

Did Notre Dame take 4 shots on their 5+ power play opportunities? I defy anyone to prove me wrong, but I don't remember a whole lotta shootin'. I do, however, remember a whole lotta passin'. Yet, UVM manages a PPG. A game winner at that. Why? Because they...wait for it...took...what boys and girls? Shots. They took shots on the power play. I loathe the fans in the crowd who yell as soon as a Notre Dame player has the puck on his stick, "Shoot it!" But I may just become one of those fans. Quit taking "puck possession" so literally. I want my team to throw everything they have at the net on the power play. Shots, bodies, even the kitchen sink. For God's sake. Pretty please. With sugar. Shoot the friggin' puck.

The problem on the PP for ND was partly because Vermont uses a different kind of kill that blocks passing lanes and
attacks pointmen from the side instead of from str8 on like most, basically giving shots from the outside, just watch
the Boston Bruins they use something close.

That said we should expect some adjustment by ND today.

So now UVM is being compared to the Bruins? Talk about going over the deep end with one win.....wow.

Hey Golden Domers, I just booked a hotel for Maine's trip to South Bend next February and I checked the website for tickets. Are the pickings usually this slim, or does the school release a bunch before the game? Thanks.

They released a few of Minnesota's unused allotment this week, but most games are nearly sold out so the pickings are what they are. Getting tickets shouldn't be an impossibility more than likely unless you wait until the last minute. Sold out games usually have scalpers outside too.
