Norwich Women's Hockey

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

I know I have always told my kids that a goalie should have the leeway of at least one soft goal especially if a team is outshooting the opposition by a lot. If they ever started bellyaching about their goalie I would say - well I guess your team should have put away the breakaway/wide open net or 5 on 3 powerplay. The goalie has nothing to do with that part of a teams game. More often then naught I think in those situations its more that a team can't finish.

"Finish" is the word here......everything else could be perfect but this will have the most impact on a team:D

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Well, I guess that settles it then... stay out of the box, goaltending that will keep you in the game, and "finish". Phew... got it figured out just in time for tomorrows game.:)

Great "finish" for this topic!!!:)
and sure the ladies will finish with a win before the break.

No Rose Bernheim?

Started Outside Center for the Cadets Women's Rugby Team. Seasons overlapped. Bernheim respected her commitment to her team and her coach and stayed w/Rugby. Playing club for the Cadets. Will play Rugby for the Spring season, which also overlaps Hockey. FYI, the ruggers will compete for a national title this spring having won their conference and region.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Nice win by the Cadets over the Lord Jeffs this afternoon!

I could not have been more off on my weekend predictions:):) I thought they would beat Trinity in a close one , not sure what happened as I was not there. I understand they used the Dawson tender and that she played okay. Heard they looked good for the most part on Sunday vs. Amherst, and I figured they would have all kinds of problems with Coach Plummers style but I guess that was not the case.....although I see that the Cadets were scored on again on like the first shot on goal of the game....again?? This seems to happen a lot with them....has to be disheartening for the team to get down a goal early like that against teams that, for the most part, they are better than. Sounds like a mental thing more thean anything else with the goalie...

Looks like Sophie is having a great year though.....she is very deserving of it...she is a kid that for the first 2 years there was great and no one really knew about her....to be as good as she has been and never be an All-American....really???? She is a joy to watch...tremendous hustle and great playmaker and shooter.

The fact she has never been an All-American is a downright travesty. I've never seen a game Norwich is playing in where she wasn't the best player on the ice.

Also, Norwich led that game 1-0. Renee Lortie scored on the Cadets' first shot of the game and then Amherst tied it on their first shot of the game. Amherst didn't take the lead until late in the first period when a blown d assignment left a lot of traffic in front of Cindy and allowed Vitale to throw the puck in front and then have it bounce off a skate and into the back of the net. Tough to fault Cind on that one.

Norwich set to Host "Cadets Skate For The Cure Night" on Jan. 22

The Norwich women's hockey team will be holding a cancer awareness game for the second straight season on Jan. 22 when the Cadets take on St. Michael's. Free admission to the game will be offered and in lieu of admission, fans are asked to donate money to help fight cancer. All donations will go to the SD Ireland Cancer Research Fund.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Seems our thread has been quiet for way too long so I will attempt to "break the ice" today, although that might be tough considering it was -23 up here in the hills recently.

Looking back, the NU women's hockey team has met or exceeded expectations so far this season, all the while getting the freshman class up to speed on coaching systems. The big concern right now is getting ( and keeping) the team healthy for the stretch toward playoff season, not unlike any of the other contenders I suppose. But if there was one aspect of the team that stood out the most, it was the defensive corps. I've mentioned in a prior post how #6 had elevated her game since her arrival as a transfer from St Lawrence but consider #8, 17, & 22 arrived in the fall and hit the ground (ice) running full throttle and you have arguably the deepest D in the league.

Congrats to #8 on her first goal of the season ( and her college career) last Saturday… now if 22 can get the monkey off her back with a goal sooner than later, that would be awesome! ;)

Looking forward, there is nothing easy about the schedule, but the M'ville game could end up being the biggest game of the year, considering it may decide home ice advantage for the ECAC playoffs, not to mention the momentum factor. ( truth be told, I hate that drive to Playland )

Now, I guessed right that Green Bay would win last Sunday but if I had to guess who was going to the NCAA D3 final four, here it is…

RIT - beaucoup scoring punch
NU - partial and biased
Middlebury - will pull one out of the hat
UWRF - just a guess based on stats.

Champ will be….. TBD 

Oh, and Green Bay wins the Super Bowl!

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Parle pas Papagno, err.. americano

Last nights game vs. Castleton featured some interesting events. We got to visit the home teams newly acquired arena for the first time. ( Seems the facility was under financial duress so step in the state college to make the save and presto, SPARTEN ARENA) Fortier reached 100 career point, congrats to her.

But the main event had to be the discovery of one Meghan Papagno. Where has this kid been? She's got speed, good hands, can see the ice, and of most importance ( in my book anyway) plays with a passion that only comes from a true love of the game.

A hat tip goes to the Castleton program for playing BOTH national anthems. To me it just adds a touch of class and demonstrates a certain respect towards the numerous Canadian players.

I thought she looked great in the one game she played prior to yesterday's game. It was actually the last meeting against Castleton. Everything you mentioned above is what I saw only this time she got on the scoresheet and she didn't in the Castleton game at Kreitzberg.
