Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Speaking of those small sheets for those who watched the Fast Hockey broadcasts last night from Babson--it was easy to see how our own Northfield barn is much better for televising. The lighting at "the Berg" is better and the camera(s) seems to be set further back to give viewers a better prospective on the entire game. It is not that the Fast Hockey broadcast was bad---actually their broad caster was fairly familiar with the NU players, he was unbiased and paid the Cadets some nice compliment--just as Puck Voice and Tanner do with our opponents.. But NU facility and our broadcast team just makes for an excellent TV venue.

Now I have to leave my cave in Maine for the game. Go Cadets--lets put the Beacons away.:)

I agree, about the announcers. Once I realized that there was no way to get the game synched, I just went with the Fast Hockey telecast, and listened to George and Tanner during the intermissions and post-game. Unfortunately, DEV was ahead of Fast Hockey, and there didn't seem to be a way to pause it to let the video catch up.

Clearly Babson has paid Fast Hockey to put their games on for Free. The Fenway game was also on Fast Hockey and that was free, too.

I am by no means an expert on these things but both at Babson (and today again at UMass), Norwich has had to play on a small sheet of ice. That is no excuse but.....

I have to believe that these smaller rinks cramps the style of any team so use to more room and their open style of play.

But I've seen it work the other way, too. Sometimes the team that plays on the small sheet can get on the big ones (especially the olympic size sheets) and get gassed because skating up the ice takes more time and energy than they're used to. These are the reasons the NHL mandates a consistent size for the ice.

Ok. I've bitten my tongue for several weeks now... What is up with cadet #7??!! I'm sure Ryan is a very nice kid but honestly, my head is going to explode every time he takes to the ice. And it's killing me to see Chris Gour sitting on the side lines. Not only has # 7 not impressed me he's scaring the sh!!!t outta me!!!

OK Icequeen, here's the answer.....the kid is a freshman, he is big, and he has a great future for the Cadets. He is learning the system and will be an asset to the team as the season progresses.

Just in from the UMass game. In a word, both teams were not shy about mixing it up and had that game gone into overtime--surely someone was going to poke someone.

In my mind the Cadets just drew too many penalties and UMass (like Babson last night) leveraged two of them into scores. On the other hand, NU, on one of its own power plays scored their (4th) insurance goal. But that couldn't match Colin Mulvey's earlier short handed game wining goal--a thing of beauty.

However, since earlier some folks had critiqued the lack of "umph" in the NU power play--there was a point in the game when the Cadets went up a man up on a PP with a minute and a half go go at the end of the second period. For that 90 seconds--the Cadets were relentless not only with accurate shooting but stood on their head keeping the puck at the Beacon's end of the ice. Sadly no score but it was spectacular in terms of passing and the way the boys controlled the situation. Overall, compared to the last time we visited that small sheet--the Cadets seemed more comfortable with its size and their passing looked crisp and spot on.:)

My biggest concern is if you look at the number of shots on goals that opponents have been allowed to take at our goalies over the last two weekends, you immediately realize we are not getting the three to one shot advantage that we seemed to enjoy earlier in the season. Like I said, those four teams behind the Cadets in the final ECAC-E standings--are for real and now it is all about one game at a time to move ahead. Great game today for Norwich and compliments to UMass Boston. Good luck Cadets...stay focused and roll on to the ECAC Championship!

He may be big but I'd take a smaller player any day if they have speed and power - both of which he seems to lack. In fact, he seems to have no sense of urgency - he's slow slow slow. And his shot is week. I listen to the fans around me and many are shocked at how badly he's been playing and questioning the logic behind his being played at this point.

You may be right and over the next few years he may get better but I'm not holding my breath. Bigger is NOT necessarily better.

Will we turn back the Sands of Time to 2009?
