Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Bum luck for the Cadets. Both NU Prof and jerrynnu26 make some very valid points--but on the whole I agree with Prof that the problem starts on a larger plane with the psychological loss Pier-Oliver. That...AND the fact that the Cadets were playing a very motivated Babson team--who deserve respect for the game they played.

Forget the 1st period of the Babson game--that was a mess--and the goalies change was a smart move if only to boost everyone's confidence. However, in the 2nd period the boys seemed to collect themselves and pick up some steam. The Individual talent was certainly there when it came to a couple of break away opportunities by Mulvey and Thomas but as jerrynu says they were not connecting with one another. Actually, I did see some solid defense as Freshman Ryan Whitell seems to have added some muscle to the defense. And its great having Blake back.

But like NU Prof said the missing strategic ingredient seemed to be Pier-Olvier.

Hope he is on the mend and only comes back when he is ready. However, until that happens NU needs to bring the team work they actually showed they had Friday night against UMass to their next game.....and leave the team that played Babson at home.

Maybe its best that NU is likely to be off the USCHOL Poll #1 perch this week so they can get back to the one by one game focus that always serves them well while forgetting the tough break of losing Pier-Oliver. He'll be back but what kind of record he finds when he does, is now up to the rest of his teammates. Good luck Cadets.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

I think it is unreasonable to expect the Cadets to win all the time since there are too many good teams out there. I thought the Cadets outplayed Babson but the defensive zone breakdowns cost them early and gave Babson all the opportunity they needed. From watching the game it seemed Norwich had to work a lot harder than Babson for a goal. Testa was outstanding for Babson and he is only there second string goalie. I would like to see the Cadets go a little in the direction of playoff hockey with the close checking and limiting the other teams scoring chances. Heck all the good teams like Oswego, Utica, Plattsburgh and Amherst have all lost a few games this year.

Testa's performance against Norwich has always been pretty good. Before Saturday he was 0-3-3.

His GAA vs. NU is approximately 3.14 (a little higher because of some empty net time, but not much higher than that). That a much better GAA than lots of goalies. We seem to have hit a couple of goalies who play well against Norwich. Torris also has always played well against the Cadets

Could it be those early defensive breakdowns were the results of a strong Babson forecheck in the first period? I'd give the first period to Babson and the second to Norwich as both were played mostly 5v5. The third period saw too many Norwich powerplays, including 5v3 which added to the shot total and took any flow aweay from Babson's game. Also, IMHO, the Norwich goal was hit with a high stick and Testa deserved the shutout, (next time!)

No doubt some of the breakdowns were because of the forecheck. I would have said the first period play was about equal, slightly in Babson's favor. Definately in their favor goal-wise. 3 goals on 8 shots, after giving up 5 on 14 shots the previous weekend, makes it tough.

Not sure what you saw on the goal, I didn't see it that way way. Still, the game hasn't been archived yet, so am unable to review yet.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

While I am sure there was more than one short coming in my earlier post about the Babson game--there was one failure for sure. That was my failure to compliment their goalie Testa who from start to finish did a superb job minding the nets for Babson. And of course I am not sure I can recall many Babson teams that didn't give Norwich a tough game.

And this this game was a well deserved win for Babson because they came confidently to go nose to nose with the Cadets.

This record 0-3-3 ovever the last 3 years is pretty DAM good
I said to my Wife Prior to game another Goalie whom can kill us

Just saw on Chan Five that the NU band is on its way to the inauguration. We really enjoy their presence each year at The Battle of Plattsburgh celebration. They are very good. Congrats!!

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Toronto released Keith Aucoin '01 from camp and put him on waivers and the New York Islanders claimed him....

Stay tuned...

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

We'll see. Just hope he gets the chance. What more does the guy freaking have to do?
Be a little bit better. He's, in the baseball analogy, a AAAA player. They're yo-yo's or Crash Davis's.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

The guy could be a solid 3rd line forward on most NHL teams, one of my favorite players as a kid. Here's to hoping somebody gives him a fair shot. Can't believe the Leafs wouldn't keep him in the AHL at least, he was tearing it up.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

The Leafs must have improved a lot. Cutting a guy that was in Washington's playoff lineup??? He'll be in the show at some point this year with somebody.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Hopefully he'll be the RA Dickey of the NHL.

Given the way he played last year for Washington at the end of the season, it's a bit of a surprise. Seems like he earned a shot. Hopefully the Isles have more sense.

TOR had to put him on waivers in order to send him to the AHL, opening up the possibility of him being claimed. Unlike preseason training camp, Keith's participation in Leaves camp was technically a "call-up" to the NHL. He could still end up with the Marlies if NYI decides he doesn't fit on their team. He'd go back on waivers if they want him in B-port, then TOR could reclaim him and assign him down w/out a rewaiver.

It's complicated, but hopefully NYI has a need for a 2nd or 3rd line center, and hopefully he does well!

WCAX - Video St Mikes-Norwich

To bad there was not video of Thomas being hauled down and than getting a penalty for a dive.:(
Or the offsides on the 2nd SMC goal. This crew seemed to have a problem keeping up with the action, and staying out of it. The embellishment call was apparently because he slid too far on the ice with the defenseman on his back.

Not a good night for the zebras ... one in particular ... from my blog this morning on NSNsports.net ...

... In a game that was not the least bit dirty or chippy, Norwich, usually one of the least penalized teams in the country, was whistled for 39 minutes in penalties, including a five minute major and two ten minute misconducts. The major for boarding in the second period, was clearly a penalty but whether it should have been a major was questionable to say the least. The two misconducts, both in the third were whistled for words to the same referee ... one after that ref got in the way of a Cadet trying to catch a breakaway pass along the boards, the other after another Cadet was hauled down on a breakaway, only to be hung with an embellishment call on the play. I'm sorry if this sounds biased ... I am the Norwich play by play guy ... but if there was ever a case of a ref having rabbit ears, this was it.
