Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

Not a good night for the zebras ... one in particular ... from my blog this morning on NSNsports.net ...

... In a game that was not the least bit dirty or chippy, Norwich, usually one of the least penalized teams in the country, was whistled for 39 minutes in penalties, including a five minute major and two ten minute misconducts. The major for boarding in the second period, was clearly a penalty but whether it should have been a major was questionable to say the least. The two misconducts, both in the third were whistled for words to the same referee ... one after that ref got in the way of a Cadet trying to catch a breakaway pass along the boards, the other after another Cadet was hauled down on a breakaway, only to be hung with an embellishment call on the play. I'm sorry if this sounds biased ... I am the Norwich play by play guy ... but if there was ever a case of a ref having rabbit ears, this was it.

Very Well Said

Who were the referees??

Did I actually see the game? No, I listened to the broadcast on WDEV radio and I believe the ref’s named most mentioned was Steve Spencer.

But one thing I have always appreciated about Puck Voice is regardless of the fact that he calls Norwich games for WDEV and NSN, fans know that regardless of which team they support that above all they can count on him to give a fair unvarnished report of what is going on the ice.

And as cynical as many have become about the media—it is because Puck Voice enjoys the respect and appreciation of fans for his fairness and accuracy that if he says the officiating last night was bad---you can bank on that fact it was likely very bad.

And we look forward to seeing George and the rest of the WDEV crew here at UNE next Friday night.

NU won the game so there is not sour grapes here but it seems given the right circumstances the Cadets may very well see that zebra again this season—playing for another team.

Thanks for the kind words Old Rook ... let me just say this about the three officials ... I didn't notice Letourneau much at all, which is always a good thing and while we all thought Lizotte missed an offsides call on the second SMC goal I looked at Channel 3's replay several times in slow mo and while the offending SMC player blocked the view of the puck on the blueline I've got to say now that it was a very close call either way ... As to Spencer ... see my previous post.
I also want to say alll this talk about the refs is meant in no way to take anything away from St. Mike's ... they played great ... they came at the Cadets hard (but clean) all night and forced them into some glaring mistakes along the way. I'm anxious to see them this afternoon vs Amherst ... I'll be doing the game at 4:00 on NSN

George, always a great job - makes me feel closer to "home" to hear your voice. I've gotten good an synching your voice other team's video, too. Sounded like an off night for Spencer, who has always been kind of a non-entity. Lizotte and Letourneau have always seemed competent.

By the way, just checked, Keith Aucoin is on the Isle's roster, and is centering the third line tonight against the Devil

Good point. We should not forget that when they visited Northfield earlier in the season St. Mike's played us nose to nose to tie the Cadets 2-2 through the first half of the 2nd period. Seems that today they played Amherst very tough as well through the first two periods before they were bombarded with 18 SOG in the 3rd to lose it 3 to 1.

Honestly, I don't think there is any team in the ECAC-E that is easy pickings for any team in the conference--they are all a threat. Right now there are six ECAC-E teams that are just behind NU with six wins each.

Speaking as a Devils fan, I was very happy to see him get to play. He looked good, and I really hope the Islanders can keep him up in the NHL, he deserves it. I know I'll be pulling for him to succeed because of the DIII connection, although not in his games against the Devils hehe!

Interesting game this afternoon...... you can see two players who spent their collegiate careers in Vermont- Keith Aucoin for the Isles, and that StLouis guy (no relation to the official :p) when the Isles host the Lightning.

Great Monday afternoon action ... my two guys both in action ... but so far early in the second nobody has scored.

Keith assisted on what might be the game winner if things stay the same.

Re: Norwich hockey 2012-2013: Our thread closed before Owsego's

I'll start by saying I respect Norwich's program and think they have as much or more talent than any team at the DIII level. But as I scanned their results and upcoming games, something occured to me. Let's say the Cadets were to lose 2 more games during the regular season and NOT win the ECAC East tourney. If you subtract the 4 wins vs. St. A's and St. Mikes , wouldn't that put them at roughly 17-5 with few "big wins" along the way. Squeaker wins vs. Castleton and Plattsburgh and maybe one more decent one.

Is everyone confident that this scenario would be enough to proceed to the NCAA's. Thoughts?

Not even the slightest.

I've been saying ever since Middlebury's nose dive that Norwich's resume isn't strong in a Pool C fight.

You can also take out the St. Thomas win too I believe since it was against a Western team unless that rule changed.

If NU were to lose a couple more games they could be in serious trouble if they don't win the ECAC East Tourney,
